Great video. I started playing whistle at 9 years old, then I started French Horns at 10, switching to trumpet later. So I learned whistle as a transposing instrument. All six holes covered is "c" regardless of the key the whistle is in. It sounds confusing, but with the common transpositions I can just read it as if it was in the correct key.
I am going to have to watch this many times , i’ve been playing the whistle for a little while but a lot of the stuff is very confusing to me. This will help me gain some understanding. Thank you so much.
Thanks. Very informative. My church prepared an arrangement of Amazing Grace. The opening is a whistle solo. For some unknown reason, the arranger made the whistle solo in the key of Eb! We got an Eb whistle for our flute player. She never played whistle before, so she just played her solo by ear. I had to play Lord of the Rings hobbit shire theme in my community orchestra. That solo was in D, but my D whistle was not loud enough, so I played it on an A whistle that could play the low D loud enough.
Lydian is one of the most prominent scales in Hindustani Ragas. It is known as Raag Yaman. Absolutely love it. Lydian flat 3 is hauntingly beautiful. It is known as Raag Madhuvanti.
Totally agree! There are so many wonderful exotic scales to be explored. I've studied Arabic maqam as well and they have many lovely modes. A few instrument makers offer whistles tuned to eastern scales.
Awesome David. Brilliant. Thanks. That's an excellent explanation. I've had a bit of theory years ago on keyboards, even though I don't play keyboards. I enjoyed the math and it help a lot on guitar and circles (5ths etc.) But, your explanation really clarified some things on the whistle and the chart is a splendid way to look at the different modes and tunes.
Wow, just found you and I'm in my second year of playing the (mostly low) whistle. I'm a piano player originally so it's nice to carry the thing around for a change. Great video!
Piano is my main instrument too and perhaps the best part of whistle is its size. Fits right in the pocket instead of 3 trips to the car for keyboard gear.
This is clear and simple mode and harmony theory once your ear locks into 1 2,4,5,6 tones the accidentials come natrally.....im not sure why all whistlrs dont have 3 octaves thou. You can just use half notes and cross fingering anyway.... great video
What a great theory lesson! Thanks so much for offering so many reasonable suggestions for playing tunes. Can I ask what A whistle you're playing at 15:11?? Thanks.
Great stuff man 😁🏵️😁 Fellow whistle player of a few decades . I approach things a tad differently, but that's the great thing about music and art, right? And I swear, some modes are more like a dare 😁 (don't get me started about ragas on a whistle.) Great video, loved it
Loved the video. I was wondering if there's a way to transpose the music so that you could play, for example, an Eb whistle, using the D whistle fingering. In other words, use a whistle that supports the key the band is playing, but show the notes on the score or ABC notation based on the D whistle fingering. Otherwise, you would need to get comfortable playing different whistles where a note is fingered differently.
There is a link in the video description to transpose ABC notation. For printed sheet music, if it's not transposed for a whistle that can finger it in a correct scale mode, you would have to do the transposition yourself.
In this video I'm playing a Cillian O'Briain "improved" whistle (www.obriainimproved.com/). He takes factory-made whistles and "tweaks" them to a much higher standard. Jerry Freeman is also famous for his tweaked whistles.

This is absolutely brilliant! How do you make your whistle sound so sweet? Please make more whistle videos ❤🙏
To transpose from one key to another, I use numbers for the notes. This really simplifies transposing for me. Nice video. Michael
You are very easy to listen to and to glean info from. Great teaching. Thank you.
I teach whistle (and flute). This is an excellent video for summarizing and explaining most of the basic techniques. Pretty easy to follow.
Thanks David a clear session. I have come to the wistle late in life but joy and a challenge. Your session more structure to work with. James Uk
Thank you David! This is very useful, ill have to listen to it more often to understand it properly I think, but its a great start
Im just relearning the tin whistle (I haven’t played in 40 years) and this is excellent theory.
Thank you Sir!
I haven’t played in 25 years. Suddenly I start getting whistle videos in my recommendations and here I am 12 videos later.
@@blacksmith67 Big brother is watching you! 😂
At least you will have an audience when you inevitably start playing again😁

You are a very good teacher. Thank you.
Very useful transposition lesson - thank you
That's great music theory, very informative for us goons who learned by ear!
Lots of great information. Just discovering the mixolydian mode was great for me. It automatically changes the feeling of my improvisations

@@joeybegoode9067 whistle and harmonica are the kings of portable instruments. Love them
Extremely Helpful. Thank You for sharing your knowledge.
An excellent video. Very well explained.
One of the best YT videos on the subject. Many thanks

Would love to see a follow up to this!
So well explained and easily understood. I’ll be back 🙂
Many thanks for this - really interesting, useful and fun video. 🙂 Very clear.
とても勉強になりました。この動画とDavid Lovrienさんに感謝!
What a great theory lesson! Thanks so much for offering so many reasonable suggestions for playing tunes. Can I ask what A whistle you're playing at 15:11?? Thanks.
It's a Chieftain whistle (from Kerry Whistles) - about 20 years old.
A lovely informative video, that’s why your the pro l suppose. Thank you sir 🎅🏻
this is incredibly helpful Thanks very much. Also I just odered 2 kerry whistles last week! A bB and a G
Thanks, you are an excellent teacher..👍👍👍

Awesome information 🎉❤

As a fiddler I’m wondering (maybe stupidly) whether a lower whistle has more notes (range). I think not. TYVM !
All whistles have the same range (2 octaves), although you can overblow into the 3rd octave on many whistles (using the same fingerings as a fife).
Need to watch
👍
What Brand of D whistle are you using? I have one but it does not play in tune as well as yours.

Can someone telll me if its possible to play an eb note on a xxxxxx D whistle? Or do i need an ab whistle?
The only option to finger Eb on a D whistle is to half-hole it - slide your finger slowly off the 6th hole to only uncover half of it.
You can also play an Eb by fingering a G on a Bb whistle, or fingering D on an Eb whistle. Ab whistles are very hard to find.
uuuhh will take a while for me to understand this... almost easier to make whistles...
