Funny enough, the Japanese version would have the gun.

They only change the expression, absolutely nothing else and sometimes it gets confusing

Begone, jojo boi
As an American, I would've preferred the cuter artwork.
SAME
No guns? Are you sure you're from Murica?!
NOPE
Super Lucky 7 same
I hate gender stereotypes. If I love cute, I am a boy, then is it forbidden? If I am a boy, then I am forbidden in cute art? If male said less capable of art, then why ancient ages having only or mostly male artists and mostly or all are noble ones? I hate this bland thing (cute are forbidden) for male, art and cute is for all gender no matters. Whose abject art, including cute, then they abject all people and themself because art is sacred (not in religious means, it's one of human spiritual element therefore I said that)
And I wanna said, I hate both masculinism and feminism. I want gender equality, that is
as an American, I only buy things with angry faces or guns on them.
The only time I bought a "cute" thing was that game with the cute little cartoon boy with the blue jumpsuit and a huge grin on his face as he holds up his thumb to gauge how far away the nuclear fallout cloud is.
What's wrong with you Americans, why do have such violent minds
Lol
We already know you’re white dude shut up
shadow the hedgehog
This sort of localization has always been dumb. I mean it's a pink blob, how hardcore do you need it to be?
I don't dislike tough Kirby perse, I just think the change is kinda pointless and the reasons behind it are questionable at best.
Japan made Kirby hardcore too, read the Kirby manga made for a boys' magazine and compare it to one made for a girls' one more faithful to the series and you get the point
He eats people.
007MrYang Very
But we all know that Americans go to shooting ranges several times a week, shout "Yeee-haaa!!" and fire their loads dozens of times. Because European releases cater to multiple non-violent countries they have to keep things more neutral!
I never saw American Kirby as angry. I always saw him as determined.
But then there’s the mugshot
5:06 Jelly filled are my favorites
Oh yeah, that sour plum jelly is something, no? #whoputsseaweedonsweets
KawaiPandaKun if 4kids just said ricsballs in the episode this wouldn't been a meme that we know and loved
Years ago, I saw a Tumblr post on Pokémemes where someone made onigiri-shaped jam donuts.
They are real, the jelly filled donuts!!
Now I saw everything ..
prettycakemachine.com/recipetutorial-pokemon-inspired-jelly-filled-donuts-for-pokenom-month/
Lmao. Brock and his homemade donuts.
So America makes kirby angry but they don’t want any gun in the case pointing towards the spectator
The guidelines that the ESRB forces to comply can be very stupid...it is not surprising that only here in America there are restrictions on what can be on a video game cover, basically...
This one wasn't censorship. More like marketing. They know america likes their violence in videogames. It's just how what their culture devolved into
This was less to do with censorship and more to do with trying to get boys into a pink character to look more badass rather then cute which would seem to be more of a girl's game to them
Since when was an "angry" face an equivalent of guns being shown in a media?
I think it's mainly to poke fun at the ESRB.
Triple Deluxe's boxart was too violent originally. I'm glad they changed it. I wouldn't have ever wanted to expose my children's eyes to the vile, horrendous cannon from Kirby.
HammerKirby yeah it causes violence
HammerKirby LOLLLLLLLLLLLLL why are they censored because it's in every Kirby game.
That cannon. Such evil! EVIL! Man-Ray’s behind this!
Cannonballs are a very real danger in today's society. I don't want to be reminded of them when I look at a Kirby game.
@Jose Andres Elvir Avila this is a joke
Japanese media is really inconsistent with red/blue being positive/negative.
- In the Japanese version of Triple Deluxe, the positive circle is red. In both versions of Dream Land 3 (which received minimal localisation), it's blue.
- In Pokémon, stat buffs are red and debuffs are blue. In Monster Hunter Stories, buffs are blue and debuffs are red.
Why not just make it green
is no one gonna mention he said Kirby Star SLACKERS, instead of STACKER?
No?
Kirby Star Slackers,
I mean, Kirby loves to sleep, so, Slacker is a valid descriptor
You keep calling it "angry" Kirby, but that's not really angry as much as it is "serious" That's a serious look. I can show you an angry Kirby, but that's more of a serious down to business facial expression. He's still cute, but also has a serious down to business look about him.
@Emma Newgate I don't think he's referring to the edgy 90s Kirby, but the one with the serious expression in the boxart. The "angry eyes" boxart Kirby still fit his canon and displays that Kirby could be expressive as much as he was cute. The alien blob spends the entire game fighting monsters to save the world so he doesn't always have a soulless happy expression 100% of the time.
8:30 it's nice that someone actually bothered to create some original art for the manual
8:57 I love how in the Japanese version, they show dedede floating, but in the manual he's just kinda whooshing through the sky
That's a lot of regional differences in such a sweat and kid friendly franchise, lol.
I love the Kirby games, they're amazing, but I feel most of these changes were unnessesary, for one changing the cover art from happy to angry seems unneeded, and while I can see why they may have feared people would walk away when they see Kirby looking so cute and happy, keep in mind not only is this still a game about a cute soft and squishy pink spheral looking creature but in the game he's often seen happy too so if people wanted to walk away they still would, and two, the food changes were also unneeded especially for those who grew up with anime should be fully aware of Japanese food, and even if they didn't recognise some of them, in the 80s we had a yellow spheral looking creature that ate alongside food items such as keys and spaceships, so a pink spheral looking creature eating ethnic food in the 90s shouldn't be surprising at all.
juice hedgehog sweat huh?
*sweet.
Woot Kirby. I'm glad that some of the recent Kirby-covers in the US do not have an angry Kirby. Also excited for Star Allies.
It’s not really angry. It’s more or less courageous or heroic. Because he’s a star warrior of Dreamland.
This was a really great video! Played Kirby sense I was a kid and pretty much knew zero of these changes. It is extremely interesting :3
Sounds like a nitpick, but I think some of the Kirby's in the global covers look "confident" than "angry"
Yeah focused is the word I'd use.
Or, a "strong tough Kirby that's really battling hard". ;)
I agree. Though a word I'd lean more towards is "stern"
I’d go with “determined.”
Exactly
Considering censored gaming also reviews 4Kids changes to various anime they should do the changes to the Kirby anime ( Kirby:right back at ya as it's known here)
They've changed changed a ton as far as I've seen there was even a hilariously dark episode that was completely cut where it appeared Dedede had killed Kirby and there's a huge funeral and everything it's amazing.
To be fair Kirby has always had in-game moments in which he gets angry.
I like US Kirby, he's an adorable, angry, pink puff

I just remembered something. Did you guys know that in Super Smash Bros brawl Fox was originally supposed to hold his weapon but they remove that? In Super Smash Bros brawl when they announced that fox was getting updated look he was always holding his gun even when he was fighting.
could have been neat and changed the moveset maybe
Canvas curse is a significantly better name than power paintbrush lol
There not Onigiri, there JELLY FILLED DONUTS! Also, he's not a not angry, he just taking things seriously.
Oh, man, I love me some Jelly-filled donuts.
Nothing beats a jelly filled donut!
A series person has a dull expression not an angry one
See and for me I like the happier cute Kirby from Japan and I am from the US.
*So originally in Japan Kirby eat health food and in the USA he eats Junk food?!*
*Thats nice for children to learn!*
*Please keep up the good work Mr. Paranoic paternal defender of good moods and education of the country families!* :v

Fun localization fact: The German dub of Kirby: Right Back At Ya! replaces all the poyo sounds with more generic Kirby voice clips.
what the hell
@@alexanderavila8488 For the scene where Tiff's name gets introduced, I understand. It'd be a hassle to get someone to say the name in other regions but the replacement noises that come from e.g. Smash Bros. Brawl sound so cheap.
@@ABlob Yea Germany and Russia had always had these issues that whenever people made a game they only tend to think of the fans that are in those countries rather than it as a whole
What the fuck
I like the serious face more, fight me. Why is this even a problem? Kirby gets TWO amazing art covers instead of one. Ive always preferred the vibrancy of variety over the stagnancy of doing things the same everywhere.
Cute Kirby or angry Kirby which do you prefer?
Myself cute Kirby
Kirby gonna kill a nigga
Both, but mostly the cute one
I never understood why people call him angry Kirby. I always saw it as a look of Determination.
Who gives a damn whether Kirby looks adorable or angry?
Bottom line is, don't f&ckin steal Kirby's cake.
Replacing healthy rice balls with junky hot dogs etc. More of a negative influence than those canons I think
I’m tired of everything in America having to be cool or tuff... Why can we be cute for once?
or "edgelord" which Japan has also done. Things can be cool/grim but without edgelordness too
Those aren't rice balls, those are jelly filled donuts. Right Brock
I got a Kirby Star Allies ad on this video
I actually like the older American commercials more, like, I'm actually not for Kirby being represented as some sort of hooligan that is gonna kill you like in the Dream Course commercial or KDL2 one, but the KDL commercial is actually pretty cute for the most part, I actually like the whole "he's cute but strong asf" type of commercial over the generic Japanese ones, it actually sets Kirby apart from some generic cute mascot like Hello Kitty, the fact of being a cute but strong character actually makes him original, and speaking of commercials, I think they're ok when he's angry but not out of character, like the Nightmare in Dream Land American commercial is A LOT better than the Japanese one, Kirby may be angry most of the time but he's not out of character like in the KDL2 commercial for example or like in the Dream Course /Avalanche ad, it shows how canonically speaking Kirby acts like, doing hero stuff and not getting jailed for being "a bad boy", I mean, it's a well animated commercial made by the SAME people who made the anime, I actually find strange how Americans got that and Japan just random people doing karaoke, I know it's the type of humor Japanese people like, but it seems like any generic Japanese commercial and I'm sure a LOT of Japanese fans would have loved some Japanese version of the American one for simply showing more of the character instead of some random guy singing, as a fan myself I like seeing Kirby being Kirby (and a well animated commercial overall) over a few seconds of gameplay screened with a guy singing some shit, if NoA wants to make a different marketing for Kirby, they should just keep advertising Kirby like Nightmare in Dream Land over just making Kirby over the top edgy like in other commercials, and I'm all for in, Kirby's cuteness sells more in Japan, but mostly between girls (that's why sadly a lot of the merchandise is just for women and little girls), let's be serious, a 9 year old boy who watches stuff like Kamen Rider would never buy a game like that (I know that because I was part of that category), it's one of the reasons why the Kirby manga, that purely exists just to advertise the series on Coro Coro (a boys' magazine), made Kirby pretty much like how Kirby was in the American ads, they made him masculine, rude, and not cute at all, all of this to probably make the games sell more to boys, compare it with a Kirby manga from a girls' magazine where Kirby isn't out of character and the humor is far more soft and cute and the nature is more sweet and cute like in the games over the more "rude" humor of the Coro Coro one and you probably get the point, and I way prefer Kirby being badass but not out of character like Nintendo does in America over how the franchise is advertised on Coro Coro, which really doesn't resemble the nature of the series at all
Sakujima Iwata TL;DR
The classic 50 paragraph essay of dumb shit none cares about in the comment section
Gah! A wall of text, my one weakness.
We all know People love Kirby more for his cuteness.
Angry or happy Kirby, Kirby will still be cute.
He is serious, not rly angry and still looks cute
Kirby doesn't look angry to me. he just looks serious and focused.
Keep in mind these commercials for kirby were made back in the 90s the same yr mario games were out. Heck the artists that drew kirby for these advertisements gave zero shyts about how he actually looked.
Kirby is like that angry kid who wanted a cookie from the jar but it was all gone so he acted out.
That sounds exactly like something Kirby would do
They took out an entire cutscene?? That’s crazy
5:16 Is Waddle Dee eating that rice ball? Or squishing it against his non-existent mouth.
Just had a look at the Kirby is hardcore trope, I'm shocked at how many games and animes and films are changed by this. Fucking censorship is so fucking annoying
Cartoon cannons: acceptable.
Video game ad cannons: *_unnacceptable, get that shit outta here._*
see the changing of certain symbols like the blue and red circles and Xs makes sense for making things easier to understand in different regions. but like why again do they go to these lengths to change food? as if depicting foreign food will somehow ruin the games marketability or change the experience in any way?
I guess they had to do that because
1. Kirby is pink and pink is massively attributed to girls (at least in the west)
2. Kirby's design is cute which again suggest that the game is for girls even though it's for both genders
Unless it resembles Ninja Turtles or Spiderman, the parents who often bought those games for their children won't have enough context of what it is. You also have to admit that gaming wasn't as appealing to girls back then (even among boys, skateboarding and stuff was still more prevalent than gaming) so it even makes it more important to advertise the Kirby series like this.
I guess Brody from Yo Ma Ma is right, he is frickin badass.
I will never get why USA does this to Kirby
Kirby is made to be a cute, pink ball of adorable wholesomeness, making it look Angry or "Serious" doesn'g fit the kind of character he is
I'm still surprised they didn't change anything in Marx's battle or Zero's
I'm not American, i'm from a Spanish speaking country, but i luckily played the games translated to Spanish with Kirby looking nice and cute in most of them
kirby lets out his inner rage in murica

Thats not Onigiri. Thats a Rice Ball.
In America the 90,s was all about being edgy and “cool” and you couldn’t just have a cute character while in Japan it was/is different

Pardon me being a pendant but its Onigiri, not Onigeri.
Onigeri could mean Demon Diarrhea. So... you know. ;)
when Kirby also has jelly filled donuts
In two of them he has angry eyes but he's smiling.
I'd definitely be interested in seeing more changes throughout the Kirby franchise! :D
I still think the whole "removing firing weapons pointed at the person" in Western video game boxart is completely bullshit. And I still don't understand the point of removing certain foods, and other elements in Western versions if they're still there at certain times.
"Kirby is Hardcore"
Never thought i hear this line in my life
Yes because Kirby is the MOST HARDCORE NINTENDO CHARECTER EVER!!!
I'm not completely sure that they actually removed the onagiri in Kirby 64 in the US. I vaguely remember seeing that item when I played the game years ago.
I don’t think Kirby’s expression in Planet Robobot and Battle Royale are actually anger. It looks more like determination to me.
3:36. Who Knows!! Maybe Kerby is actually has a split personality like Jekyll and Hyde.
Well.. angry Kirby makes sense in games like Squeak squad where he goes on a rampage over a damn piece of cake.

on epic yarns cover kirby is happy and it seems like its the same on all regions
I think the western changes was best for business. 90s was all about being cool and edgy and bragging that it makes you cool to play a game is what every kid wanted to hear
As a boy in the US in the 90s, there was societal pressure to like cool/tough/gross things. Pink was verboten, used by the toy industry to color code something as girls-only. Cuteness wasn’t discouraged, but was mostly sold to female audiences. That said, a big appeal of Final Fantasy and Super Mario World to me and my male friends at the time was how cute the chocobos and yoshis were.
Kirby is cute? What's cute about a creature who can basically devour you alive, disguise as you, and murdering other people using your own hands?
DuhWaphuls
That's not what Kirby does. All the bits about killing were right but Kirby doesn't disguise himself as others.
Cosmological expansion Dong I was over exaggerating lol
