    You get an A for being resourceful and making a tool you need, young man.
    Please get yourself a spark lighter for lighting your torch. You can find one for less than $5.00 at the building supply stores or hardware store. Using matches to light a torch is a very dangerous practice. Get a pair of safety glasses while you're there. Protect your eyes. Remember, no one expects an accident to happen to them.
    Another source for inexpensive knives to modify is your local GoodWill or other second-hand store. You may find a knife with significantly better steel than what you'll get at the dollar stores. Too, don't overlook estate sales.
    Keep up the good work!

    It’s funny how everyone is a knife expert, you showed it carve so well done. The definition of expert is ex is an unknown quantity and a Spert is a drip under pressure.

    If anyone is curious the pliers are also called vice grips they are called many things depending on where you live but where I am they are vice grips so if you were confused this hopefully helped

    Just curious about the hardening of stainless?

    • @pyrotech1999-bootlegblades
      @pyrotech1999-bootlegblades  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I honestly had no idea what I was doing back then, the hardening process I went through was for carbon steel, and at the time I thought it was a good idea. This is more of a starter/disposable tool, something to just get your feet wet with.

    Knife appears dull in use. Not surprised with this chinesium "stainless" steel. Good shot though bud. Many people don't know what a truly sharp tool feels like. They are a pleasure to use and significantly safer.
    I might suggest picking up an antique tool or knife from an antique store for the next try. Thicker steel, more carbon, better made, and possibly a full tang as opposed to the chinesium dollar knife. Still cheap, though maybe not a dollar cheap.
    next time attach a pair of those vice grips right before the handle. They will act like a heatsink. You can use this trick when soldering too.
    Maybe try doing an oil quench next time too.
    For anyone that read this far, you may want to consider the safety of your hands if you make one of these. I wouldn't use one. Not made in this manner anyhow.
    Those are my thoughts, take 'em or leave 'em. I'd love to see a video using improved techniques. And a video of making such a device with a custom handle would be neat!

      Usually stainless steel can't get hardened that way, the procedure you showed would work for carbon steel (although it would probably be better in oil) as a result I am not really convinced that the resulting knife is in fact hardened.
      In the end though it works and you may have to resharpen it more often than if it was correctly hardened. Good job and thanks for the video

      You're exactly right. Now that I'm a little older I've realized that I'd rather take an extra 20 seconds to get eye protection on than possibly hurt my eyes. But hey at least we have two of them so that leaves a little wiggle room...right?

    very VERY cool video for cheap entry-level tool! good idea, easy to follow, logical. i might want to carve a few things but im not sure yet how that'll work out, so i don't wanna go and give 30 bucks for a knife i might not end up using much. if you'd be around, i'd buy you a beer just to say thanks! now i'll go pester my dad round the workshop.

    I was afraid the Keyboard Elite were going to be down here slinging armchair expertise. I'm happy to see everyone had the same feelings about this video that I did.
    This kind of thing plants the seed of resourcefulness in the fertile soil of an artistic mind. The tools a person tends to make for themselves can be as much of a work of art as the peices they use those tools to create.
    You're doing more good than you know, my friend.

    Good video man. You did well.
    We all got to start somewhere with the crafts and learn the skills, and yours is a very useful way to get into the hobby/craft, whatever people call it. And improvisation is good, we got to learn with "less" to appreciate the "more" we may or may not later have. I learned this lesson the hard way, and still use some of my improvise methods in the craft i currently do. I am not saying that i would not like some better tools and material, but i can make do with some alternatives.

    Thanks for making this video, just what I needed to inspire me to try it myself. I like the simple: heat to cherry red and dunk, no tempering approach - as also used by Paul Sellers, 50 year woodworking master craftsman, when re-purposing an old knife. For spoon carving, I would go for a more open curve, perhaps with a slightly tighter curve at the end ;)

    Suggestion: Open up the pliers and hold the knife to the pipe and then bend, you might get a better curve that reproduces the same curve as the pipe. I am going to give it a try and you know what happens. Your video was very helpful thanks!

    • @pyrotech1999-bootlegblades
      @pyrotech1999-bootlegblades  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      As long as you don't hold it on the belt for more than a second or two you should be fine. Since its such thin metal it will heat up easily. If you've already hardened & tempered it, i suggest you do quick passes on the belt sander.

      They work well for small projects like spoons and maybe finishing a small bowl, nothing too big. I'm not gonna lie to you and tell you its a great tool, because its a $.30 piece of china steel. But it can get the job done for people on a budget.

  • @cainfamilyhomestead4867
    @cainfamilyhomestead4867 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Also how is it under a dollar you need a sharpening stone.,the knife,and a blow torch and by the way you do not know tools that tool is called channel locks not pliers

    • @pyrotech1999-bootlegblades
      @pyrotech1999-bootlegblades  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The knife itself is less than 1$ which is why I titled the video "How to make a hook knife for less than a dollar." However I do realize that not everyone has tools like a blow torch, in that case they can use a stove or even a campfire. I also assumed that people would have a sharpening stone if they are looking into knife-making, if they don't then this video stresses the use and need for sharpening stones if they are looking into the hobby of knife-making. Lastly, the tool that I call "pliers" are in fact not channel locks, they are vice grips. I made a mistake with what I said too, just like you. But the main point of saying "pliers" is to inform the audience that they need a tool that will hold onto the blade, it does not have to be specifically "vise grips," or "channel locks." Thank you so much for your view and your input, have a great day!

    "stainless steel, which is always a good thing"
    No, it's not always a good thing. For detail woodworking, many often prefer a carbon steel instead, in part because you can put a finer edge on it. And for a spoon knife, thin steel that bends isn't a good choice.
    Also, you probably used at least $5 worth of propane and sanding belts, so I wouldn't call it less than $1. ( Especially not for those who would have to buy a torch, sander and pipe wrench too.)

      It's a really nice video - it really shows how cheaply and easily it can be done better than any I have seen. But Art makes a valid and useful point. Most fine woodworking tools use some sort of carbon steel: given a choice, I opt for carbon steel.

    Curved knives are hard to keep a good edge on compared to flat bladed tools so when you pay more your buying a hard steel or carbon steel that won't need an awkward sharpening process every 5 mins....just strop a good woodworking tool & your ok all day carving easer & safer as your not forcing it through every cut risking slipping etc...you can make your own but you must use very hard steel & that's more brittle so not easy to turn into a good carving tool you also want a handle ergonomically set to not strain or rub your hand causing blisters angled & shaped exactly to suit the knife edge.
    Realistically your wasting your time with this like making your own shoes....
