As soon as the horns hit it brought tears to my eyes. A truly magnificent piece that brings out the majesty and enigma that is Star Trek. Right from the beginning it sets the atmosphere of adventure and exploration - that is what Discovery is all about.
@@worfsonofmogh1154 While it's not perfect, I actually really enjoy ST Discovery and Picard. I worked a few days (as a daily crew member on 2nd unit) on season 3 of Discovery and there is some great stuff coming!
This opening really nails the one character the show never gives it’s due. The ship! Its as much a part of the line up as the crew but we never get a sense that she’s the object of everyone’s affection and dependence to travel about space.
Which is a shame as that aspect was incredibly important to Gene Roddenberry when he was conceptualizing TOS and TNG - the ship was as much of a part of the ensemble as any of the command crew.
this is what the show has never gotten. Star Trek was never about one titular character, the story never revolved around one person. The shows are named after ships, and thus the main character of the show is the ship. It has to take the center stage throughout everything. I've noticed so many times, in STD, that the ship is never given the central role it so dearly deserves. In its own intro, the ship keeps buzzing around like a housefly. Its a spaceship, do they think we, the audience would care about it buzzing around random characters of the show? No, show it in space, in its natural habitat, going on long voyages and exploring planets and space anomalies. In the show as well, the ship rarely is the largest thing on screen, usually it sits cowering in the corner, which is really annoying as the Discovery really is a beautiful vessel
If this series had been made around the time of Voyager/Enterprise etc then this is how I would have expected the titles to look. Really captures the feel of those TNG era shows. Good effort.
Not sure if you're insinuating that it looks "better" on STD because the other series (plural) were 20 years ago. Choosing not to read it in that vein. I think it says a lot about the current showrunners' understanding of the franchise that the people running even the first two seasons of TNG did the show justice far better than this newest trash has.
Wow! This puts many of the traditional openings to shame! Between the crescendo with the opening title, the heavy bass, and the perfect use of clips, especially of the hull rotations and Spore Drive, it truly shows off what the shows main character is: the U.S.S. Discovery. Well done. Well done indeed!

First I love the whole thing. but about the spore clips, in the TOS the title came up with a warp drive pass on screeen, and so did the actors names. to much warp drive in the opening, "you think". peace...
add me to the list of "too much spore drive". Plus I don't think the concept will last throughout the entire run of Discovery; not only do we know it isn't around within the next 10 years but I think it will be abandoned soon because its implementation raises all kinds of ethical questions (it requires a biological element, and it seems to be driving Stamnets mad). That said, its a very good alternate title sequence. While I don't mind the actual opening, its the music which is dull and not very memorable. This at least has some grandeur to it.
Ya, The ship flipped too many times. I liked the music though, and using the right fonts helped as well. It really felt like a Star Trek intro. I like Discovery's actual intro also, but this is better.

Thus the inclusion of the TMP-era Stardrive, neck, and nacelle pylons means that a massive refit basically rebuilding the ship in eighteen months suddenly makes a lot more sense. Because the only thing that they had to replace would've been the navigational deflector, the warp nacelles, plus adding that new dual forward torpedo tube with each tube having the ability to fire three torpedoes. LOVE IT!!!! THIS should be the opening to the show. Not that I dislike the "official" titles - but this is so much more in keeping with the whole ST feel. ST:D is missing the "beauty shots" of the ship. Every other ST had lots of shots of the ship (or DS9) in every episode. The ships should be just as much a character as any of the people. I *hated* the early designs for the Discovery - now that I've seen it doing it's "jump drive" thing (especially the cool shot with the camera locked on the saucer going around) the design makes sense and it's definitely growing on me.
Disagree with you on the whole spore drive thing. I think it is a stupid concept that was forced out of a need to create something new. I can't stand the spinning saucer or the spinning ship for that matter. There is NO scientific theory that supports this concept.
@@starbase3132 Excess Energy Cavatation is why the plates on the saucer spins (if you look closely, the entire saucer doesn't spin) and the reason for the entire ship spinning is just so it looks nice. There is alot of scientifically unsound things in all of Star Trek.

VERY well done!! I much prefer this over the official opening. When I first watched it, I had the sound off at work, and was imagining the music from the opening of Voyager.
Like someone else said, It does feel just a little spoilerish with all of the spore drive footage. The surprise of the drive and what it's capable of is one of the bigger points of the start of the series. But like someone else said, it's obvious that you only had so much footage to work with. I'm sure if the show had adopted an intro like that, they would've made more footage to cover the opening. I liked the music. Maybe not necessarily for the opening of this show, but I definitely liked it. And it definitely captured the feel of DS9/Voyager's intros. All in all, I'd say good work.
That's the problem... it's TOO much like DS9/Voyager, Discovery needs to establish it's own identity as a different show and it's intro does the job of being some thing unique.
The Spore drive also completely breaks all established canon technology that would have been available to the Federation at the time. Then, again that's not the only thing STD has ruined.
I kinda assumed that something would go horribly wrong with it, either destroying the tech or making its use impractical. If it's still up and running by the end of the season, I would be very much surprised.
Totally captures the feel of the old intros. Unbelievable
I rewatch this so often just for that reason.
Except for the phaser fights, which is at the heart of this Trek.

Do you think that the creators realised that the show would be abbreviated to a genital ailment?.....
fmlazar It does establish its own identity...as crap.
Now THIS is how it should've been!!! Bravo!!!!
This opening better than discovery original theme....
Its, so STAR TREK
love it 🌹⚘🌹⚘
Great job, love your music. Some good orchestrations.
And you are amazing....well done!!
Fantastic! Much, much better than the boring one we've actually got. Feels like a proper Star Trek intro, not some Game of Thrones clone.
