I was 8 years old when my parents brought me to a local movie theatre to see Jaws. It was rated PG. Who would have thought it would affect the rest of my life? To this day I don't go in the ocean. The older I got, the more I appreciated how well-written, well-made, and well-acted this movie actually is. I remember this film being the talk of the summer of 1975. It truly was a phenomenon. The fact that the mechanical shark broke down most days, and because of that the shark wasn't shown that often, was a key ingredient to the film's success. It was a pain to make (as many films on the water are), but the blood, sweat, and tears created a classic.
Great discussion. Very much enjoyed it. Well done to both of you. Subscribed. Jaws is my all time favourite film. Just like to point out that the barrels and harpoons were actually in the book, and the real life inspiration for Quint (shark fisherman Frank Mundus) used harpoons and barrels to catch very large great white sharks. It tires them out so they become exhausted and can be towed back to the dock. Not sure how much the barrels would have been used if the mechanical sharks worked but the idea was already there. By the way there is a good stage play called The Shark Is Broken, about the filming of Jaws, starring Ian Shaw, son of Robert Shaw. I saw it in London a few years ago. Well worth seeing if you get the chance. Cheers. Bear wishes.
@@ThePlotPals Hi. It wasn't a common method to hunt big sharks with harpoon and barrel. Seemed to be peculiar to the Long Island area. Frank Mundus definitely used it out of Mountauk (Quint actually mentioned catching a 16 footer off Mountauk with two barrels). A lot of other fishermen tried to catch the biggest sharks on rod and line to get in the record books, but obviously you can't catch a 20 footer on a rod. Maximum for a rod is about 17ft and 3,500 pounds (5 metres, 1,500 kg). Cheers to you. Have a great weekend ✌️
"Four beachgoers were attacked by what is believed to be a single shark off the coast of South Padre Island, Texas, during the Fourth of July celebrations, according to local authorities. Texas Game Warden Capt. Chris Dowdy informed KRGV about the alarming events off South Padre Island. According to Dowdy, two of the incidents involved actual bites, while one individual was grazed and another was injured while attempting to fend off the shark. The South Padre Island Police Department reported receiving a call around 11 a.m. local time on Thursday regarding a “severe” shark bite near the 4100 block of Gulf Boulevard. A second person was also bitten by the shark and taken to Valley Regional Medical Center in Brownsville. Photos circulating on social media show a woman with a chunk of her leg missing as Good Samaritans drag her to safety."
