Blockbusters actually started in the US back in the early 80's but it never took off. It's actually kind of infamous because it's one of the game shows that replaced The David Letterman Show on NBC.
Before his late night shows, Letterman had a morning show that ran for a few weeks in 1980. Even though it aired in the morning, it had the chaotic/subversive atmosphere of a late night talk show (a lot of Letterman's signature bits like "Stupid Pet Tricks" started on that show). Because ofthe nature of its comedy, it didn't do very well in the ratings because the people who watch morning television (retirees and stay-at-home parents) weren't really the kind of audience that its humor appealed to, but it had a huge cult following with teenage and college-aged viewers (Conan O'Brien claimed he hitchicked for Massachusetts to New York City to attend a taping).
So when the show was cancelled, there was a big outcry from fans (in addition to pulling the plug on the show, NBC paid Letterman $1 million in exchange for him agreeing not to work for another network for a set period of time) so resentment over the cancellation might have played a part in why Blockbusters never took off.

@lavoielactee7179 wowzer I had no idea... it was a staple late afternoon show for a lengthly time in the UK... but just has faded into kitsch 80s nostalgia ...it was popular as most of the contestants were students and I recall they created a cringey hand jive style seated dance to the theme 🤦‍♂️🤣🤣 tune.th-cam.com/video/5Z_uqL8opW8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=4bPuwmg57Y7afYRX
I had no idea it bombed in the US. Thanks for the info 👍👍👍👍👍👍🤣🤣
