  • 🏡 High Hopes, Higher Disappointment! Join me, all the way from Victoria, on a special journey to Queensland for a handover inspection of a client's new home, valued at over $600,000. Built by an award-winning builder, this property was supposed to be a showcase of top-quality construction - or so we thought!
🔍 QBCC's Oversight? Think Again! Expecting nothing less than excellence, especially under the watchful eye of the QBCC (Queensland Building and Construction Commission), what I found was utterly surprising. Spoiler alert: It's not the high standard we were led to believe!
🚧 Inside the Inspection: The reality? A total shemozzel. We're talking floating brickwork, non-compliant roofing, and more. But that’s not all - a neighborhood walkabout revealed similar issues with other homes. It begs the question: What's going on, QBCC?
🏘️ Beyond the House: This video isn't just an inspection; it's an eye-opener to an industry-wide issue in Queensland. Watch as I uncover the uncomfortable truths of what some builders are really up to.
📣 Get Ready for a Ride: This is more than just a house tour; it's an inspection adventure that will leave you shocked and informed. Thank you for watching, and let's dive into this together. LET'S GOOOOO!

Bought a brand new build in QLD with a ton of issues, QBCC told us to sort it out directly with the builder who didn't want a bar of it. If we lodged a claim with QBCC expect a wait of over 6 months before they would even look at it. Useless. Easier for us to just sell the property.

    Welcome to Queensland.
Im a subcontractor here in Queensland, and we work for a number of builders,
The builders that we are involved in only build approximately 4 to 5 homes per year.
The actual builder is on site every day he inspects all that gets done on the building step by step.
The big construction companies that build hundreds of homes per year ,we call them desk top builders, all they are interested in is how many homes have we handed over this week, and how many contracts have we signed this week.
I know that they are cheaper than a small builder, but there is price to pay for that privilege, and that is below standard workmanship.
So to all the potential home owners who are thinking of building a new home in this 2023 environment,go for a well known small builder, and i will guarantee you will be
    a lot safer.

Definitely we need more diversity in small to medium sized companies. Have giants dominate is way too risky, especially when they fall. We need some spice, an abundance of diverse competition.
I guess the original idea was a large company if they screwed up you were more likely to get it fixed, but it's not the case by far. They still operate like a bunch of small companies pulled together on the one umbrella. It's a headache trying to claim on poor installations or defects, they try their best to get out of it or do the minimal effort to rectify.

    • @JUNO-69

Not completely true. We had a small building company build our off the plan development and the quality of the work is embarrassingly bad. Our experience isn’t unique either. There is something else going on outside of the idea that it’s the fault of the big companies. The Australian building industry is a cowboy industry and it needs to be reformed. These clowns are ruining peoples lives.

It can be very hard to know who is a good trade when a person is not familiar with the industry and it's methods. The person could be licensed and still do a crap job, and it takes so long to recover any money or fixes. The education on building standards needs an overhaul and cancel dishonest ones, but only after they are reviewed. Because you can get cheeky customers as well who can scam. But it's more paying high for low quality works, not following product installation standards.

I worked construction on the Gold Coast in the 90s. Everybody was dodgy to save money/maximise profit. My girlfriend was getting a house built and the day before the floor pour I went to check the rebar. I can read plans. I noticed some rebar was not installed in a few places and saw the bundles of steel on the ground. I spoke to the foreman and he got his knickers in s knot asking 'So you know about these things?'. Yes. I said. We paid for it, it's on the plans, put it in. I'll wait. He was not happy as I watched him. I then was there before the pour to makes sure it was done properly.

I built my own home on Russell Island as an Owner Builder.. I used a kit from Imagine kit homes and It all went well... I built on a slab which was poured by some old concreters and it was a solid pour and very accurate to the plans.. no waffle boards or sytrofoam just solid concrete and rebar over visine.. People questioned why I insulated all the walls including all the inside walls and ceiling, as I think this is not that common here in Queensland. I was supplied with insulated metal foil sarking that went under the colour bond roof and had a large crawl space that was also heavily insulated... I noticed the house being built next door did not have any sarking under the metal colour bond roof or insulation in the ceiling and the certifier passed it. When It rains I don't hear anything in the house and when its hot it stays cool in the house using just fans.. Its a small house and when my wife stays up and watchs TV in the next room don't hear anything in the bedroom with the door closed. Yes I agree the building standards need to be better enforced in Queensland..

So we had a house that we ended up actually taking to court and the QBCC due to not meeting contract requirements. The issue is QBCC in most areas does a local "board" I guess and it is always local large builders on it. So a local builder judges his mate and says nah thats reasonable. When you show any standards or laws they say nah thats not really how I'd see that and write you off. Theres absolutely no recourse for you unless you are willing to go to a multi year hundreds of thousands of dollars lawsuit. We ended up settling for about 50k and doing all the works ourselves at a cost of about 150k as we couldn't afford the mult year battle.

No actually these are ppls lifestyles. Homes used to be built as a residence to live in. Now ppl want houses where it creates a lifestyle. When you want such things like that then you are gonna have some sort of problems. If houses were built for what they are actually needed for, then these problems wouldnt exist.
Older homes were very basic designs and builds yet are much more sturdy and better built with better materials.
Homes now are built with so many components and materials, somethings gonna give.
Just like cars used to be made just to drive and simply made with few components. Now ppl turn them into mobile homes with all the latest tech gadgets. Ofc things are gonna go wrong all the time.
Its not so much the builds and designs are bad, in which they are, but to put all the pieces together just aint gonna happen without defects and major problems. The skills of the industries workforce just dont understand how to undertake such projects. Its all slapstick building where as long as its close its good enough.

I work for the Gold Coast Council and my job takes me all over the place. The worst I’ve seen is the ‘developments’ that are built on mangrove land and flood prone areas. The developers open the sites for sales between 10-1:30-2ish depending on the weather so the mosquito and Midges aren’t too bad. Any time either side and you’re stuffed.
The houses are so quickly built and in one development I know a year later many of the houses have large cracks running from the driveway up the front of the house.
It’s not just the house it’s all the underground infrastructure that’s put in a very haphazard manner as well.

If a builder and/or subcontractor gets reported for breaches of the codes and standards and are found guilty 3 times, they should LOSE THEIR LICENCE to build/trade for LIFE! In addition, they should not be allowed to trade unless they have adequate insurance to pay for the FULL costs of rectification, up to and including the cost of FULL demolition and rebuild if necessary!

If they can't keep up with demand, they should STOP being GREEDY, and STOP taking on new jobs that they CAN'T complete on time. They promise the world to customers before they sign the contract, and then don't care about the customer once the contract is signed because the customer is locked in and can't do much about it. They say they will finish the build in 6 to 12 months, knowing that they can't and then take 2 years or more to finish the build to a VERY POOR standard. Because they take on MORE work than they can manage, everyone is rushed and so many corners are cut and inexperienced and unqualified tradies are used and ultimately, the customer pays dearly for that. So why should the innocent customer suffer because of that. If builders are going to INSIST on being GREEDY and NOT regulate themselves to the significant financial detriment of innocent customers, then that is when Governments need to step in and create new laws to harshly punish builders and sub-contractors that do the wrong thing and build in breach of laws, codes and standards@@Mr_jz_12

I do not want any phone calls after I leave as this means I am going backwards, my two sons are now with me as apprentices and they will be taught by a 54yr old builder who loves the old school way, because when they are tradesmen I want them to have the same pride in their trade as I do, it’s a good feeling to look back after a big day and be proud of what you have achieved, ask any chippy who loves his job…….. I think we are witnessing the beginning of a change to the building industry because of what you are doing, 100% total respect for what you do, and now when people say “ jeez your going a bit overboard “ I can say “ have a look at the tic toc inspector and you will see why I do what I do”. The QBCC use smaller builders like me as sacrificial lambs so it looks like they are doing something, don’t give them any reasons and it will be all good

It is a disgrace that the level of "quality" in the trades is at such a low. Care factor and respect is in the gutter. I witnessed a well know project home builder pour a slab, "waffle pod" down the road from me. All form work stripped just hours after the pour. No proper curing of the concrete slab which was left basking in the sun for days after and not a drop of water. Four days later a 5 tonne excavator trampled all over the slab. So much for achieving the MPA rating 28 days.

It is same with all trades these days, not just the building industry. An Aussie trade certificate used to be something to be proud of, now there are companies out there handing them out to anyone who says they've been doing said trade for awhile for a small "fee". Adding to this importing so called "tradesman" from foreign lands where there are no standards to abide by just adds to the degradation of our industries.

May as well rent for a decade, not going to be able to buy a house without paying a fortune for something that is going to crumble and fall apart within a few years.
Few hours west of Brisbane their are subdivisions that are pretty well fucked because some bright spark council zoned up flood plains, and evidently nobody inspected buildings that were just sat on top of clay.
