Most of the production budget was spent on animation.
If it bugs you that much, just go listen to the Audio Drama version.

the voice acting actually IS terrible. the english dub has good voice acting, but for some reason idiots like you think its better to not be able to understand anything thats being said, and being forced to stare at the bottom of the screen rather than watch and listen, are somehow preferable to actually enjoying the shit you watch.

The colors also help. It's so washed out and dull compared to the recent anime. It may not have the same production value, but I'm glad the OVA exists since it provides such a different, interesting tone.

The silent time stops where Dio just teleports is probably one of the best things from this OVA
Yeah, it's surprisingly eerie when people teleport with no visual or auditory effects. Which is perfect for that scene.

I love the fact that star platinum in the ova has some kind of "conscience' and protected jotaro without him even knowing.
bruh its explained in the first chapters that star platinum protects jotaro on instict, jotaro literally shoots his head to show star platinum protect him
it's basically Jotaro's own subconscious. he doesn't want to die so he saves himself subconsciously.

To be fair...this is actually brilliant. Like you are seeing exactly what kakyoin and joseph have been through which is, not knowing what DIO is doing in frozen time.
I strongly agree. And the voice acting was different, not terrible. But maybe I am just biased because it was the OVA that was the only Jojo animated adaptation of the time.
I guess you could say the this version is what other people see while the sound effect thing in Stardust Crusaders is what DIO sees.
Let’s also not forget that in kakyions case he can’t even think fast enough to process what to do, but when you watch the original uncut version of this fight it’s essentially what jotaro sees minus those first two attack’s where star platinum reflex blocks.
After that bit of toying jotaros mind seems to be able to stop time to keep up with dio from the looks of things yaknow?

I think what also made it better is that with kakyoins death there was no music which added more sadness to it
This ova has one major improvement: that even if Jotaro didn't know he can move in stopped time, Star Platinum does know it and is protecting him.
What's great about it imho is that it tiesj into Star Platinum's first appearance when Jotaro claims he's possessed because SP just moves instinctually and reflexively and then proves it shooting himself point blank, yet being saved by SP's reflex with surreal speed and precision. One could argue that was the very first hint of SP proving it could stop time, as many other characters also would comment on SP's unbelievable speed mentioning time, especially in later parts obviously.
The beginning where everything around them was being destroyed and Jotaro getting random cuts will probably be the closest we get to what it’s like for people without Stands.
So that's what that was all about huh? I was so confused.

@@sakkuyniron9756 A year later, yeah everything makes sense now, should've realized. It's nice how they adapted that part, definitely some cool visuals in the OVA. Even though it doesn't have that bizarre energy from the anime, it's still pretty good.
As much as I prefer the anime, this ova has some gorgeous animation. The hand-drawn effect seems to give it such a "genuine" feel
Imma be honest, the voice acting isnt as bad as everyone makes it out to be. I honestly dig it. And, it fits the tone the OVA is going for.

@@pizzadepasta802 Well, he tells Jotaro that he's been following him with his eyes in the frozen time, with Jotaro accuratly guessing where Dio went. So I'd say it's experimentation from a cautious vampire, which is why he used the knives afterward.

samiamtheman 73 My theory is since Jotaro did that to Za Warudo instead of Dio it killed the stand which kills Dio. The stand doesn't really have the same powers as base Dio so you could assume that a hit like that would kill the stand. Also, I think in the anime it touched on how Dio wasn't as much as a Vampire especially after taking Joseph's blood so he probably couldn't regenerate that well. When polnareff stabs him he takes a while to recover(which really isn't like the anime though) so it kind of demonstrates this.

Jotaro's voice is still active nowadays. He's super famous, there are even references to this OAV in his other workds.

Even if it's not true to the manga, I love DIO toying with Jotaro and being able to see what The World looks like outside the frozen time.
There are some rielaboration but the part of DIO' World is the same of manga.

Had I not been told about DIO’s time stop ability when I saw this video for the first time, I would have been scared shitless and assumed DIO had strong psychic abilities and teleportation - because this video really does portray the illusion of such a possibility very well, and how it would seem like such to those who cannot move in TS.

Physically, DIO's 20-21. Yes, at age 20-21 DIO has that body. Granted, it's Jonathan's body, but Dio was pretty buff too.
Still man, the voice actor here sounds like a 90yr old Grandpa mumbling something to himself all the time. Im glad they had redone Part 3 in 2014.

What an awesome OVA. It has that dark edge that part 3 really benefits from. I know its common in japan to make things a bit more lighthearted but i really enjoy edgy jojo

Honestly, the fight wasn't very long. I'd say 4-5 minutes tops of real time. Even in the paused time, things were drawn out so much that "5 seconds" or "9 seconds" were shown to use as being a minute or two or three at times.

Love that you dragged this out, a lot of people think the anime/manga is a newish series but I knew it wasn't. One main reason is because it is styled similar to the Fist of the north star. A series which in itself came during a era of over the top macho looking men that were fighters/warriors. Even Beserk shared the similarity. The 1970s-90s Era of anime were a Era of the brawlers,fighters, male & female macho. A great era if you want to skim for old low fan service anime/manga.
I really like the lack of effects when DIO stops stime. No flash of light, not smoke, no distortion, no color changes, no sound effect.
The way DIO just pops out of existence makes The World's time stop so much more menacing

It’s funny how the ova is so much better animated than the anime adaptation, and yet it manages to look way more awkward than the new version. This why style needs to be well mixed in with substance, other wise it manages to be this bland.
I know what you're talking about, but I wouldn't call this bland. It's just a much more eerie and menacing style and tone than the anime.

This is awesome!!!!
While the voice acting and sound effects are dated, and the character designs seem a bit off to me, this is really well done. The animation itself still holds up, but honestly the angles and cinematography is shockingly well done. The bit where Dio just blinks in and out is honestly a lot more intimidating than how we always saw what he was doing in the anime. I still prefer the anime but the OVA definitely wins my respect easily.
I like how they used shovel sounds for Jotaro hitting the wall.

Man i watched these 90's ova's about 10 years ago while I was in highschool. And even now that there are new adaptations, I still prefer this by a long shot. The old school 90's animation is so much more serious and dramatic. It's timeless. If you like Jojo, you also should watch YuYu Hakusho.

The animation is incredible, and the relative absence of music lends a sense of eeriness to the scenes that serves the story well. The voice acting is … not good, but serviceable. Takehito Koyasu from the anime brings a level of flamboyance to Dio that clashes with the OVA’s tone and ambience.
Can I just say that is way more scarier and accurate than the 2015 version
Maybe not to the part 3 manga BUT it did take the atmosphere of Part and grafted it on Part 3 XD I actually enjoy it better this way !
I personally think Jotaro's VA (who voices later Arlong in One Piece) did quite a decent work here, except for the ORAs. I'm too used to the anime ORAORA
