I believe the starting of the whole "start out on a smaller bike" thing is most people don't have the skills to ride the bigger bikes when minor/major things happen while riding, and 90% of the wanna be Valentino street racers don't respect the power at all no matter what others warn them about it. judging from my 25+ yrs of riding, and the performance focused groups I rode with, the natural progression of bike has always been 1) some kind of beginner bike 2) 600cc super sport 3) 750cc-1000cc superbike 4) then after a few years of acting like the man on a liter bike most go back to a 600cc super sport for the sheer enjoyment of performance riding ie fast corners/ track riding 5) then maybe a performance naked for the street or maybe the dream bike they always wanted to own. Of course this is different for those that don't blast canyon roads or track, and mostly do high speed "smack downs" on the highways. Anyone can start out on what ever bike they want this is true and you actually will spend less money in bike purchases when you really want that big liter/bigger bike in the end, but if you dont respect the bike no matter what size or class it is, your chances of becoming an organ donor are pretty damn huge

I havent leaned it over very far and I havent been going very fast if I have leaned it over Throttle control will make or brake your 1000cc experience That's not all their is to riding a 1000cc but its definitely very important
Maaan I swear I was getting sooo much push back on wanting to start on a cbr1000rr. After watching this video I’m going to go ahead and make my down payment next week and get the process started!! Prior to this video I always said you have to respect the power and your throttle! Take it slow, real slow and careful.

The catch is that most people don't understand that it takes only a split second for one to get away from you and on pavement around vehicles and over 100 mph that can mean death. Liter bikes push the 190 to 200 mph envelope with a few mods. I love mine but I rode a 600 for years. Hope you don't find out the hard way how quick that bike can get away from you
The one thing is that you don't really get to appreciate the different bike classes. It also means that you learn a lot slower usually. Going through each class is definitely a very strong learning experience. Plus then if you drop your bike you didn't just drop an S1000RR...

Truth bro! My starter bike was a 06 gsxr 750. Rode it for about 2 weeks then sold it due to military obligations. Now 5 years later I just bought a 2017 zx10r KRT edition and I'll start off in the lowest mode to get used to it then move up when comfortable.

5150 GSXR I agree. Best to learn from basic and cheap bikes. Allows you to really hone your skills cuz in an emergency, no abs, trac control etc. Was riding for a year already when a 50cc scooter dropped me and I broke 3 bones.
My best advice/thing to say, is that the bike isn’t fast, unless you make it fast. Capability doesn’t mean automatically. If you take it slow, it will be slow.
Everybody chirping that you shouldn't start on a litre bike are not riding a BMW S1000RR. Bike is so smooth in addition to the features you mentioned make it the greatest bike in the world. The only way I am upgrading my S1000RR is if a newer model comes out that I really want.
I started on an fz6 5 years later I have an R1 the amount of things I learned definitely help me now. You can do what you want. But you don’t know what you’re comparing it to because this is your only experience

Bro congrats on the beast of a bike S1000RR, These are a great lasting beautiful top of the line machines. To be respected at the least and being a new rider. Id probably get into wet mode to learn the bike at less than peak power with the help of traction control and wheelie control already setup this would greatly give you the riding aspects you need on learning the bike with a mid power cut back. Also look into race rails or a stunt cage to better feel out the possibility that when you fall (which you will) the bike has protection better than sliders for sure. Once rain mode is in the clear you then can accommodate to learning street then open her up to race mode.

The stigma is mostly in cornering and not high siding mid way through. If you like cornering you will get better experience with a smaller bike as you don't have to worry that much with the throttle.

I´m sorry if I was a little too harsh with my comment, but I just don´t believe that such a super sport bike is a good beginner motorcycle. I´m a beginner myself and got a Kawasaki Versys 650. It´s got plenty of power to learn on and is also pretty comfortable on long distances. I wouldn´t want to learn on a BMW S1000RR myself to be honest.

Everyone normally starts on a 600 or 750 where I'm from. Idk why Americans think you're just instantly gonna die if you swing your leg over. You can start on anything.

SOLD on the "wake me up". I bought a KTM RC 390 rode 6k miles in 6 weeks fucking tired of this thing already. No power for the freeway. It's fun on HighWay130 up in the bay area. Other than that I'm already looking at the 2016 R1 thats a bike ill keep for a long time and grow into.
I totally agree I said the same thing u didn plan. On getting a 1,000 it was by mistake but glad I ended up with one as my first bike and I let others get I. My head scaring me but it’s a waste of time and money trading up over an over you as a rider jus have to be a responsible rider and respect the power and you’ll be just fine on any size bike
The internet tells be to get a 300cc to start. People in real life (with riding experience) told me to get 600cc at minimum because the small bikes suck. I think the 300cc theroy is overhyped too. So im planning on getting a 650 or 600 as my first bike.
lol..good luck. enjoy the insurance premium, maintenance, and leave the electronics on. rain mode is doable as a first bike, rides like a 600. If you got money for one and want it I'd advise to start something cheaper if you drop. Ride safe.
Man I bought a 09 Kawi 650r and rode it for 6 months then I bought a 2016 R1M and had it worked, flashed and dyno tuned before I ever even saw it in person. I had a friend drive me out to get it and rode the 250 miles home. Nothing like Atlanta traffic the first time ever on a liter bike. Been hooked at the track ever since!

There's no point in wasting all that cash to up class, what every 6 months? 250/300-600/750-1000? Just get what you want and call it a night. If you're going to start on a small bike get a 600. I see lots of people on Craigslist downsize to that from a 1000 so you'll be able to trade or sell it with no problem.

You're right and wrong at the same time. Most people can't afford a liter bike with electronic rider aids as a first bike so you're the exception to the rule. The rider aids are making up for a persons lack of skill and experience. Ultimately it's up to the individual. Very nice bike though

They will help you in some critical situations and they do make riding easier but only to a very limited degree for a beginner on a super sport bike. Experience comes with time. Skills are something you can´t just get right at the beginning. They develop over time.

I think the motorcycle manufacturers started that rumor so they could sell more bikes like x3 to each person (250 > 600 > 1000)... I just got my first bike and it's 1000cc... I won't ever let my ego run the bike, I only use my best tool like you (which is my brain), so nothing bad will ever happen. It also even has a speedometer on it so I can even further use my head and not ride beyond my limits, hey what a concept hehe.. Great video, thanks.
I agree with you bro. I took a class then a month later got a 650. rode it home from the dealership...then practiced for two weeks in a parking learning the in and outs. I had a Yamaha r1 3 months later. If you have a brain, you wont crash because you value your life. I'll be moving to san Francisco soon man. Are you in the bay area?

as a now more experienced rider I would never ever recommend any bike to anyone due to the differences in size, height of bike, strength of the rider (important for some weaker riders). But BEFORE considering a liter bike you should test ride smaller bikes. You‘ll have a great fun on 125cc-500cc bikes too. If you already start at 1000+cc every „newcomer“ wants to see the power.... I live in Germany where we have passages where you can go full throttle and our speeding laws aren‘t as strict as f.e. american laws but every rider who is a complete beginner (on a bike or in general driving) should learn first slow and the increase power, engine size, speed, whatever.... The problem with youtube is that looking at an video where someone goes 200mph on the autobahn or freeway looks easy but in real life its a way different story Stay safe out there and watch out my friends....

I have in my sights a Yamaha XJR1300 2002 with 4000 miles in mint condition at a very good price... I guess that take in it slow and safe, building your confidence is the way to go... what about cornering and the handling the weight which is the biggest issues that I see everybody worry about??? any tips on that ???
Ok so here me out here. I'm 20 and I just completed my endorsement and my manager has offered me his 2014 r1 ( which is my dream bike) at low mileage for only $2500. It's 1000cc and while i'm one of the safest riders and i'd never do anything stupid, im wondering if it'll be too heavy and powerful to safely handle with little experience. Im 6 foot and 190lb so I can probably handle the weight. I really feel like I wont find a deal like this on my dream bike and any decent sv650 or ninja is easily over 3k in my area. So what im wondering is should I go for it, its the best deal I can find and its my dream bike. Thanks!
If I was in your position I’m pretty sure I would buy it 😁. It’s going to take some getting used to but if you promise yourself to take it slow and to not let others get you carried away into riding wilder then you can handle then you’ll be fine. I was a bit nervous for a while when I started on this bike but I literally have no regrets starting on a big bike at all. I just had to battle my ego and didn’t have shame to tell someone that I was slow because once you do that you won’t feel pressured to keep up with someone faster than you are, if you do then that’s when things get really dangerous.
I'd say a good 75-80% of noobie riders drop or lowside a bike within 2 years of riding, and that's part of the whole "Liter bikes are bad for beginners". They just cost more to fix.
Congrats on the bike. I personally didn't start on a 1L bike because of cost and experience on 2 wheels. Could I do it and control myself? Of course. But I have more brains than money and I know I would mod the bike out. Doing mods to my R3 is so much cheaper than an R1. Plus I paid cash for everything. You are just renting the bike when you finance. Interest and depreciation alone could buy the R3 (as an example). I like money and I rather not take fistfuls of it and throw it out the window. Not knocking anyone that finances, but we need to get away from the "have now, work for it later" attitude.

Not really a liter bike as your first when you keep it in low power mode..... so really your not starting on a liter bike. My first bike that I still have is an 04 ZX-10R aka one of the widow maker years.... can’t turn the power down on that....
To be honest the throttle response kind of laggy compared to other bikes i've recently rode (Ducati 1199, R6, 2015 S1000RR). Getting used to the power is a whole different story though. That took like a month to really get into the power without scaring myself
I've ridden several 600s and the responsiveness differed between the three. I pulled the trigger on a s1000rr. Gets here next week! Literally can't wait but I'm definitely gonna take my time getting comfortable with it. I appreciate the post dude. Great video

Just remember you'll start to feel confident on it WAAAAAAAAY before you have earned that confidence (we all do;)). There are all kinds of situations you'll encounter for the first time. Id probably get into wet mode to learn the bike at less than peak power with the help of traction control and wheelie control already setup this would greatly give you the riding aspects you need on learning the bike with a mid power cut back. Also look into race rails or a stunt cage to better feel out the possibility that when you fall (which you will) the bike has protection better than sliders for sure. Once rain mode is in the clear you then can accommodate to learning street then open her up to race mode.

The stigma is mostly in cornering and not high siding mid way through. If you like cornering you will get better experience with a smaller bike as you don't have to worry that much with the throttle.

I´m sorry if I was a little too harsh with my comment, but I just don´t believe that such a super sport bike is a good beginner motorcycle. I´m a beginner myself and got a Kawasaki Versys 650. It´s got plenty of power to learn on and is also pretty comfortable on long distances. I wouldn´t want to learn on a BMW S1000RR myself to be honest.
This thing where you shouldn't start on a litre bike is strictly American where I'm from 250's 300's 400's are so scarce and sell so badly they're only used for track bikes. Everyone normally starts on a 600 or 750 where I'm from. Idk why Americans think you're just instantly gonna die if you swing your leg over. You can start on anything.

I totally agree I said the same thing u didn plan. On getting a 1,000 it was by mistake but glad I ended up with one as my first bike and I let others get I. My head scaring me but it’s a waste of time and money trading up over an over you as a rider jus have to be a responsible rider and respect the power and you’ll be just fine on any size bike

The internet tells be to get a 300cc to start. People in real life (with riding experience) told me to get 600cc at minimum because the small bikes suck. I think the 300cc theroy is overhyped too. So im planning on getting a 650 or 600 as my first bike.

Man I bought a 09 Kawi 650r and rode it for 6 months then I bought a 2016 R1M and had it worked, flashed and dyno tuned before I ever even saw it in person. I had a friend drive me out to get it and rode the 250 miles home. Nothing like Atlanta traffic the first time ever on a liter bike. Been hooked at the track ever since!

There's no point in wasting all that cash to up class, what every 6 months? 250/300-600/750-1000? Just get what you want and call it a night. If you're going to start on a small bike get a 600. I see lots of people on Craigslist downsize to that from a 1000 so you'll be able to trade or sell it with no problem.

You're right and wrong at the same time. Most people can't afford a liter bike with electronic rider aids as a first bike so you're the exception to the rule. The rider aids are making up for a persons lack of skill and experience. Ultimately it's up to the individual. Very nice bike though

Because those rider aids DON´T make up for lack of skill and exp. They will help you in some critical situations and they do make riding easier but only to a very limited degree for a beginner on a super sport bike. Experience comes with time. Skills are something you can´t just get right at the beginning. They develop over time.

I just got my first bike and it's 1000cc... I won't ever let my ego run the bike, I only use my best tool like you (which is my brain), so nothing bad will ever happen. It also even has a speedometer on it so I can even further use my head and not ride beyond my limits, hey what a concept hehe..

as a now more experienced rider I would never ever recommend any bike to anyone due to the differences in size, height of bike, strength of the rider (important for some weaker riders).
But BEFORE considering a liter bike you should test ride smaller bikes. You‘ll have a great fun on 125cc-500cc bikes too.
If you already start at 1000+cc every „newcomer“ wants to see the power....
I live in Germany where we have passages where you can go full throttle and our speeding laws aren‘t as strict as f.e. american laws but every rider who is a complete beginner (on a bike or in general driving) should learn first slow and the increase power, engine size, speed, whatever....
The problem with youtube is that looking at an video where someone goes 200mph on the autobahn or freeway looks easy but in real life its a way different story

Ok so here me out here. I'm 20 and I just completed my endorsement and my manager has offered me his 2014 r1 ( which is my dream bike) at low mileage for only $2500. It's 1000cc and while i'm one of the safest riders and i'd never do anything stupid, im wondering if it'll be too heavy and powerful to safely handle with little experience. Im 6 foot and 190lb so I can probably handle the weight. I really feel like I wont find a deal like this on my dream bike and any decent sv650 or ninja is easily over 3k in my area. So what im wondering is should I go for it, its the best deal I can find and its my dream bike. Thanks!
If I was in your position I’m pretty sure I would buy it 😁. It’s going to take some getting used to but if you promise yourself to take it slow and to not let others get you carried away into riding wilder then you can handle then you’ll be fine. I was a bit nervous for a while when I started on this bike but I literally have no regrets starting on a big bike at all. I just had to battle my ego and didn’t have shame to tell someone that I was slow because once you do that you won’t feel pressured to keep up with someone faster than you are, if you do then that’s when things get really dangerous.

Congrats on the bike. I personally didn't start on a 1L bike because of cost and experience on 2 wheels. Could I do it and control myself? Of course. But I have more brains than money and I know I would mod the bike out. Doing mods to my R3 is so much cheaper than an R1. Plus I paid cash for everything.
You are just renting the bike when you finance. Interest and depreciation alone could buy the R3 (as an example). I like money and I rather not take fistfuls of it and throw it out the window.

Mista _Wo better traction control which is adjustable, abs with lean angle sensors so theoretically you shouldn’t lowside under braking, wheelie control, basically more aids to protect the rider

how long did it take to get used to the throttle responsiveness?
To be honest the throttle response kind of laggy compared to other bikes i've recently rode (Ducati 1199, R6, 2015 S1000RR). Getting used to the power is a whole different story though. That took like a month to really get into the power without scaring myself
I've ridden several 600s and the responsiveness differed between the three. I pulled the trigger on a s1000rr. Gets here next week! Literally can't wait but I'm definitely gonna take my time getting comfortable with it. I appreciate the post dude. Great video
