    *What hacks do you have for speeding up or simplifying your fish care routine?*
    P.S. This is an aquarium decorated by my young daughter, so please be kind with your comments. Everything in this tank is safe for fish and invertebrates, and yes, we do have live plants in there.

    Just wanted to thank you for protecting your kids' identities. I published a paper about parent blogs. One really popular blog used the one kids name in the title and told many intimate details about the kid's life. So, I'd like to affirm your great parenting ethics.

    As a nurse we see patients that come in with a lot of different meds. I got an idea to use pill sorters for feeding. If you get one that has an am and pm it helps if you have someone taking care of the tank while you are on vacation. There are some that will have up to 4 compartments per day, so if you only feed once a day it will last a month. The caveat is it all depends on what dry food you feed and how much.

      @GirlTalksFish  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oh, that's such a good idea for kids who don't know how to properly determine portion size! I recently got a little scoop, so now I can tell my daughter how many scoops to use with nano pellets.

    I bought a 10m garden hose for just my 4 tanks, i plug it onto a syphon to drain water directly outside house then i remove that and plug it onto my kitchen sink tap and fill the tanks.
    Easy.

    My biggest tip is to stay on a routine 😂! Seems like it's waaay easier to stay on top of it than to try to catch up. I'm the kind to forget everything if I don't write it down, so I have a little day plan/calender-thing for each set up. That way I can also make a note of any changes or issues that come up, on what day, and what I did in response. Just a word doc on my phone, can take pics or vids that way, too. It's probably overkill, but fish nerd gonna fish nerd.

    • @GirlTalksFish
      @GirlTalksFish  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Love it! Yes, I have an Excel spreadsheet to remind me of what I did last time and when the water was last changed. But having a little memo on my phone would probably be a lot easier!

  • @jambrosio7
    @jambrosio7 ปีที่แล้ว

    they also make attachments for python hoses if you wanted to do water changes directly from the sink to the tank! There may be a metal cover with a filter on your bathroom sink faucet but it can usually be unscrewed to get to threading that you can thread the hose onto

    So I only have two smaller tanks at this time so instead of using a bucket I use a pitcher and I have shrimp in both tanks so instead of just dumping it in I’ll use a small section of air tube and slowly add the water back so as to not shock anything in the water

    Newbie Question: when using the python and vacuuming up debris in the gravel, does the stirred up gravel cause any spikes in the water, and raise any levels of ammonia or such? Any cloudiness? Do you vacuum every inch of the flooring or just a few spots?

    its wild to me some siphons dont have some kind of manual pump attached, it makes it so much easier to use and its one less thing to worry about for people new to the hobby, there is already so much to learn it can get overwhelming so being able to reduce that even slightly can go a long way also depending on the size of the siphon and the tank and what kind of scape you have in the tank you dont always have the room to hold your siphon upwards on a diagonal and having a manual pump doesnt prevent you from getting the vac starting the old fashion way either

    • @GirlTalksFish
      @GirlTalksFish  ปีที่แล้ว

      Very true! I'm not sure why that's not more common place. Maybe because it requires you to have an outlet nearby?

    hi i wanna get a betta fish and i need some help so...
    i have a 3.5 gallon fish tank and i put the gravel and fake plants in it and i have a siphon gravel vacuum and betta water conditioner and a fish net and fish scraper.
    so i just need a air pump and a sponge filter and a heater and thermometer? right?
    and how do i put the sponge filter in bc my fish tank has a lid so how would i be able to close the fish tank then? i saw the vid on how to se the sponge filter up i just dont know how to put it in my tank so that the lid can still close normally
    please tell me how i can do that and if i need anything else for my betta fish and nay good tips thanks

  • @radiantrosie
    @radiantrosie ปีที่แล้ว

    Correct me if I'm wrong, but in other videos haven't you said that you have very soft water and it's been somewhat problematic? Maybe it doesn't apply in your case, but in our house the water softener is connected to the water in all the bathrooms but not the kitchen sink or garden hose, so those sources are harder water. I noticed that in this video you said you fill the bucket from your bathtub spout. If you have a water softener, that may be why you're getting such soft water. (Unless I'm getting this all backwards and you actually have very hard water. 😉)

    Stagger your routines to allow fish tank to settle especially i have 4 tanks already. Have an emergency tank if things crash. Less is more. No need to overmedicate especially if you are getting it from your LFS since they do quarantine also and you may know them and what they do. I watched your videos and you reallly OCD and overmedicate.
    Patience...patience..patience...this has been challenging as I want to see my fish and plants in the tank all at once. Use google you tube and DYOR to get overall general knowledge. Have a test fish to test the waters that prep a tank. Trust what you see and don't chase the numbers! The fish may have been in the wild before so they survived longer maybe than we had them.

    A lot of "nopes" for me. 1. I only use cold tap water because it has been proven that bacteria live in hot water heaters. That is also why I do not consume hot tap water. 2. An electric pump and giant syphon for a 10 gallon aquarium is overkill, by a lot. 3. Pouring fish poop water into your sink that you wash your face in is nasty.

    • @bec2549
      @bec2549 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1. If it's cold weather, it's better to temperature match using both cold/hot tap water so you don't shock your fish. 2. An electric pump is an easy way for her daughter to fill the tank rather than lugging heavy buckets. (Although Irene - maybe a tap connector with clamp might work too). 3. Not everyone washes their face with water that has been sitting in a sink. Some people just shower, bath etc.

    • @jasonstouder
      @jasonstouder ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bec2549 1. it is better to let the cold tap water increase in temperature as opposed to using water from a water heater because water from water heaters has been proven to carry increased amounts of bacteria that live in the water heater. 2. ok. 3. it is true that not everyone washes their face using the bathroom sink, it is unquestionable that the bathroom sink is designed for that use. thus, any general instruction should recognize the unsanitary nature of such actions. this isn't about, "loopholes" and "shortcuts". its about teaching people the correct way to keep fish alive and healthy while keeping ourselves healthy.
