- I crashed my Spyder RT at an EZ Pass Plaza just inside the Canadian Border at the Queenston-Lewiston crossing on 06-22-2023. Luckily, I only bruised my ego and my butt. However, my Spyder will be out of commission for several weeks. Special thanks goes to Bob & Barb of @HetteshWorld for helping me get my Spyder to my dealer the next day.

The Spyder is a beast Jody, takes a major beating, and keeps on ticking. Me, I landed on my pride, and now I'm just kicking myself in my pride 😂 which apparently can take a beating too 🤣

Hey Wayne, sorry to hear about your "shunt," but I'm very glad u didn't get any serious injuries... it's a whole lot better to have to repair the bike than u being in the hospital getting fixed up. Thanks for the video! May help someone in the future...

That was painful to watch. I’m glad you weren’t hurt. I ripped part of the bottom off of my Spyder a few months ago backing it out of my toy hauler. It’s a sick feeling when you realize you’ve had a catastrophic event on these machines. As long as we walk away unscathed everything else can be rectified. Stay safe & thanks for posting this video.

Glad to know that you are OK. Good to know the spyder was tough enough to survive and still ride. Hopefully all you will need is a couple of new suspension arms. Thank you for sharing this with us. We should "always be learning" from each other. Take care of yourself.

Glad your ok. Always have the parking brake on with spyders. These machines can take a few hits, I know from experience too. Hope they get it fixed quick for you.

I hope they get to it soon too. The service dept is booked solid thru Jul 11th, but they said if there's cancellations, they might be able to start working on it 😔l

Thanks Eric. The closest dealer was booked solid until July 19th, my dealer booked solid through July 11th but they told me to bring it in, and they would start working on it if anyone else cancels. I think the biggest delay will be waiting for whatever parts they need to do the repair.

Yep, the little fun buzzing around bike is my ride fun riding for now, but it's not for touring, and I have (had) a big trip planned for next week 😔
We have all been there and thought, why did I do that ??? First and foremost you are not injured...soo glad Barb and Bob were there with you!! Time to get back on the horse and ride again!!

Man. I'm sorry this happened to you. When I had my Burgman 650 Scooter, I had one of those Cramp Busters on there. Good thing the parking brake was on. Threw that thing away.

That Spyder also had a Pedal Commander, so a small slight twist of the throttle, it took off very fast, without the Pedal Commander, the outcome may have been different. I have not nor will I install a Pedal Commander on my new Spyder.
Sorry this happened Wayne, thanks for your transparency… I just got a Spyder and have been breaking it in. I’ve noticed that it’s so comfortable, I’m having to remind myself to focus b/c it’s easy to get complacent, and it’s a powerful machine. 🥰 I’m watching videos and it’s a great reminder. Best wishes as you get back in the saddle! 👍
The Spyder is very comfortable, and you're right, fairly easy to lose focus. This is a lesson about a mistake that I won't make again 😊

I made a bad mistake that day, but only hurt my pride. It was a 'memorable' lesson learned that I won't forget on the new Spyder 😁👍

Had a similar experience but luckily I didn’t hit anything. Learned to use the parking brake after that. Ride safe and glad you were not hurt.
When I first got my spYder I stood up at a stop sign took my foot off the brake and without using the foot brake and promptly launched myself through the intersection, luckily I was way out in farm country and all I needed was a shower and new under ware. Glad your OK , vehicles can be fixed people not so much.
Yeah, you can't drop a Spyder, but dumb dangerous mistakes can easily happen. I sure could have used spare underwear too 😳☺️

I don't yet know the cost. The dealer has been booked solid for weeks, they haven't yet looked at my Spyder for an estimate. Soon, I hope.

Wall Drug was very unique, and we were ready for a break, and it was a cool place to visit. Seeing Abe and the boys was awesome 😁🤣🤣 No beer for me, coffee is the strongest liquid I drink 🤪😁

I learned that lesson the hard way decades ago in brand new scooter, bike drag my butt for 10ft LOL. Now first thing is park brake and neutral when stop somewhere that isnt a traffic light.

Hello Wayne, I just found your site some great stuff and content, I hear you with the crash, as I have MS I can only get on and off the right side of my Spyder so I have always made it a habit when I stop to put on the park brake, as I have to hope off to open the gates and having MS I can be quiet unsteady on my feet at times and yes mine has take off from me luckily it was flat and it only flattened some grass, I hope your ryde does not cost to much to repair it and the ego is a easy fix have a laugh 🤣😂over your favourite drink about it and you butt is there to remind you park brake 😀😀
That Spyder went to Spyder heaven, after the insurance company determined it was a total loss. 6 weeks after I made this video, I had a new Spyder in my garage, so all's well that ends well. And I won't make that mistake again 😊👍

I got lucky, no trucks in the lane I Ianded in. The Spyder hit that pillar really hard, but I was still able to ride it home. The Spyder certainly is a beast !!

I had my 360 camera on the Spyder, but I never record when I'm crossing the border. The friends I was with happened to have their camera on, which is the crash footage in this video.

I’d recommend neutral and parking brake when getting off the bike in the future. That goes for whether it is running or not.
That's always the right way... shortcutting the safe way to save a few seconds was simply a DUMB decision on my part

The blue Spyder RT belongs to Bob & Barb, their TH-cam channel is Hetteshworld. I'm not sure what model year, I think it's a 2018 Spyder RT Limited, but again, I'm not certain.

Im still getting used to mine. Ive only had Elvira a year. I was getting confident and ihad her on a state route and slowed down for a curve but not enough. I was like oh im over the yellow ive done that i got her.....next th8ng i know were down in a ditch by railroad tracks. We were both okay though.

One of the reasons why I always put it on neutral and have always done the on every bike mostly becouse on a "real" bike you can't let go of the clutch when you stop. I guess that behaviour followed me to the spyder aswell.
I usually did the same, and i always do that now. I guess on that day, being in a toll booth, getting flustered, and trying to hurry, I just wasn't thinking straight. But, thank goodness no one got hurt, and 6 weeks later, I was riding my new Spyder and learned a valuable lesson 😁👍
So if I’m understanding this, you were in an easy pass lane and stopped then you got off of the bike while it was in gear and running while holding onto the throttle. Is that correct?
Almost fully correct, got off the right side, my left hand grabbed onto the throttle as I stepped off... I must have twisted the throttle because it took off quick and before I could let go, the Spyder was already sharply turning to the right.
Three bad mistakes:
1) Didn't put it in neutral
2) Didn't set the parking brake.
3) Grabbed the throttle as I stepped off

Well you don’t lean on the throttle, and if you get off your bike you FIRST turn it off always. That goes for car also, something you in the usa don’t like apparently.
