Thanks Richard, yeah, you could be very right about the flaker pad, thanks for the suggestion! I'll check out your channel soon. I've been (slab)knapping for about a year, in 2007/228, but I did it virtually 24/7 back then ;-) I've only recently been starting to pick it up again.

Thanks for the kind words Paleoman, unfortunately it's rather hard/expensive for me to get anything other than slabs here, so that's what I've been working on. I do have a few cobbles of flint though, but not much practice on percussion flaking yet... but I do find it fascinating and a challenge, so one way or another, eventually I will get to the percussion part as well ;-)
Re. the large blades, see my new video in which I show them a bit more close-up :-)

Another interesting video! Breaking is part of the game, and it is good to show that it happens very unexpectedly sometimes. I love those finished large blades you have, great job on all of them. You do very nice work! Do you ever use much percussion flaking? I use it for probably 90% of my work. After a while pressure flaking kills me and I wear out fast. Thanks for showing your technique, very fun to watch and good job on your videos!

..an artist to behold..great tutorial. I've never made/used a jig but now compelled to try. Glass breaks for me too...most of my glass points are points which broke off long points! Argh..caramba. Flint/chert is definitely more resistant to breaking at least for me. There is no apparent reason for breakage except the right nick in the right place with the right pressure and POP goes the weasel (point). I need a jig like yours, hand strength not terribly good for larger projects.

Good way to seriously create injury to your fingers & hands. Glass is one of the worse materials that you can knapp with. When pressure flaking flakes can be removed from the bottom & lift from the top with very little effort. Those gloves you wearing won't help much as you send a flake right thru them. Archeologists John C. Whittaker knows this kind of injury very well. To quote him- " when knapping glass in one of my experiments I managed to drive a pressure flake through my leather glove & into my left index finger. When I pulled off the glove, there was a small cut ,less than a quarter of an inch wide, with a glass flake sticking out of it". Two surgeries were required to take a bit of a tendon out of his arm and put it in his finger. Whittaker had severed both the sublimis & the profundus tendon when pressure flaking due to an unpredictable fracture of the glass driven through his glove and it's force when pressure flaking. His finger still won't completely straighten or clench into a tight fist. Reference his book "Flintknapping making & understanding stone tools page 3 ". To me nothing could be more dangerous and boring than working clear slabbed glass, with modern tools.

You do very nice work I forgot to add. How long have you been knapping?

Too bad it broke ,but that is part of the learning. In my opinion the hole in your flaker pad is too wide and this allows the point to flex down and break.Where you flake should be no larger than 1/4 inch wide and than slowly taper to wider as you go across pad.You should always flake on narrowest part and see what paleoman 52 uses just a plain leather pad of several layers. You can not let a long point flex where you are flaking.Just some food for thought, see my channel and some of my points.
