In this video, we continue looking at hydrocarbons. We look at how the viscosity, flammability and boiling points are related to the size of the hydrocarbon molecules.
This video is based on the AQA spec. If you are following a different exam board then you should check your specification. The Amazon link above is an affiliate link. My teacher might as well just retire and play your videos
Ahhhhhh yessssss
My teacher spent so long
Long chain hydrocarbon are extremely viscous.
Short chain are extremely flammable.
Short chain hydrocarbons have low boiling points. Very long chain hydrocarbons have higher boiling points.
Yes
Yes well explained I have recently studied this topic and it’s really interesting

These videos are the only reason why my grades aren't failing
your saving my GCSEs thankyou SO much
I love you, watching these vids at 2am rn and it's helping a lot
I appreciate your efforts in helping young people improve in science. Thank you.
Exam tomorrow!!!
Good luck
@@savetheworldlegend7809 Mate, they put it 2 years ago, their exam was 2 years ago...😂
@@savetheworldlegend7809 Nice though tho💛👍🏻
Same 2 years later lol
Lads exam is coming
You're incredible helpful! I have my mocks starting tomorrow
Niamph Motley are you at the real thing yet? Just remember, mocks are usually more difficult and everything in an exam is something you've come across before. I'm sitting my last few and keeping calm has gotten me this far, I wish you the best with your results :) work hard
Did you pass them
Thanks so much Shaun, I had a chemistry test 2 months ago and I didn’t understand the topic at all. I watched your videos on repeat over and over, and then got a grade 9!!🥳🥳
@daisy im sitting my chem tommorow bruh, but im ready at least
@@niranx_yt7084 how did u do
@daisy how did y di
@@niranx_yt7084 sitting mine as well good luck to me😓
You have become my new teacher during the corona pandemic!
Only three videos left and I have finished chemistry 🤯
Thank you so much for these simplified and amazing videos!!
gcse in like a month im not a night before type of guy. jk im sure ill be back for the night beforeres!
Well...
Holy crap I needed this sooooo much. Can't wait for that workbook tho
you are so helpful, keep up the great work
your videos are life savers
Night before exam 👏
you literally own my heart
Best channel on youtube
Where is the link for the workbook ? And if it hasn’t come out when will it thanks
Thanks for your videos
I have my Chemistry paper 2 tomorrow :( I watched all your videos which were extremely helpful :)
I have 5 BCSE's including all 3 core subjects, I have a level 4 in English and 4 B's. Although I could have got a lot better grades if I wasn't moved school at 13!!!! I'm going to do my AS level in maths and science next year hopefully, I know I can pass them!!!!
You are great Sir!
thank you so much - organic chemistry is the one topic that just does not stick in my head
Do hydro carbons made from nuclear isotopes change the way they behave? The heavier the Isotope the more it changes properties, even though being chemically the same.
This is so good
sir, do we need to know the boiling points by heart (for aqa) ?
No just the trend.
I am sure that the last point is called volatility
please could you do biology and physics paper two?
So these alkenes are gases at room temperature how are they used in our daily life
that is so good why did they not get my new level in ice out
Will you be doing all topics for each paper in each science?
lolmealor he already has
How much and when will the revision books come out
Very good
You are a saint
May God bless you
would you say that short chain hydrocarbons have lower boiling points because they have weak intermolecular forces?
Anika Mehra yes
Where is the link to the workbook ?
he won't give one yet unless he finishes all the videos of GCSE science
when you say short chain hydrocarbons have low boiling points, and the as the size increased so does the boiling point but the boiling point is 1° which is very low? and then you say that methane has a low boiling point but it’s 161°? sorry this may be a dumb question but i have my mock in two days and it’s not making sense to me
forget that i commented that i didn't see the - symbol
sir hydrocarbons only include alkenes.........?
Hydrocarbons include alkanes and alkenes.
Why is the boiling and viscosity high for long chain hydrocarbons? Does it have anything to do with the bonds?
The boiling point is higher because there are more intermolecular forces between longer chains. The viscosity is because the longer chains tangle up with each other.
Freesciencelessons do we have to know the reasons for our exams?
Class of 2019 Night before squad SOUND OFF 🤙
I love you, Sean
good luck everyone, thanks sir!
Do we need to know all the boiling points for the alkanes for the exam?
well.. did we?
@@cw8486 no
Do we need to remember the bp for each?
No just the pattern.
Does anyone have any tips for what topics you should focus on particularly for paper 1? I have mocks in a week and it would really help, thank you !
It's honestly completely random, so you just have to do all of paper 1 topics bro. Good luck tho
Ik i am late but u could have gone on the aqa spec cuz it gives info on it
do we need to know the boiling points of the first four alkanes?
No just learn the pattern. That's all you need.
Ok cool. Thanks for your help.
Keep up the good videos.
I'm a little confused.. you said that all of these gases boiling points were below room temperature but how is the boiling point of methane (161 degrees) lower than room temperature?? sorry, this may be a really dumb question
No it's not a dumb question. The boiling point of methane is MINUS 161 degrees celsius. Room temperature is PLUS 20 degrees celsius.
ohhh sorry, yes I didn't see the minus sign in front of the numbers. Thank you
He deserves an Oscar
do we need to know about volatility?
Not for the AQA spec.
are these properties for all hydrocarbons or only alkanes?
Yes, however alkenes are usually more reactive
Does anyone know if you have to memorise the boiling points of the hydrocarbons?
i doubt it
no you dont just the trends in the lenghts and the boiling points
1:05 indeed!!!
do we have to know the exact boiling point for each alkane???
I don't think it matters as long as you know that the longer the hydrocarbon chain, the higher the boiling point.
You dont need to know the exact boiling point just that boiling point increases as the chain size increases
I find youre videos very helpful and you explain everything in a very understandable way but youre microphone makes the sound very wavy and sometimes I cant hear what youre saying
Subtitles
A way to remember methane ethane propane butane is miss eats purple babies
Monkey's Eat Peanut Butter, wys?
done
u said that bigger the chain higher the temperature, but the temperature is increasing in minus
Yes but the number is getting LESS negative, in other words higher.
Thanks
Understood
2019 boys
i’m scared.. 6 more days before my science exam
Mine is tomorrow 🥶🥶🥶
What i wanna know is why boiling point increases when as the chain lenthens😩😩👌
That's because the intermolecular forces increase when the chain length increases. This means that it takes more energy to boil the hydrocarbon as the chain length increases. I discuss intermolecular forces in "Properties of Small Covalent Molecules".
