I'm glad you mentioned modulation, which is something Sleep Token have been doing a lot more frequently in their latest releases - lots of people get caught up in thinking the song is in another time signature, but it's entirely 4/4 :) Worship.
Yassss! Sleep Token are the best band I have ever come across and the recent album is definitely my AOTY! You should go down the rabbit hole now. They’re genre bending and use elements of everything from rock, metal, RnB, trap, hip hop, gospel, and more. Even if you don’t like one song don’t write them off as every song is different and as you can see from this one they switch up completely through the songs, also don’t be thrown off by some of them being 7-8 minutes long either as it goes by far too quickly. You should start at the beginning and work your way through as they tell a story and have call backs to a lot of them. The band are anonymous, I and others know who they are but won’t reveal out of respect to the band and fans but the singer goes by the moniker Vessel, drummer, who is a beast is II, bassist III and guitarist IV. From London UK. As far as their discography goes they brought out two EPs called One and Two, then 2 singles called Jaws and The Way That You Were, then the three albums Sundowning, The Place Will Become Your Tomb, then TMBTE (Take Me Back To Eden). They’ve done five covers that I’m aware of. One being Hey Ya by OutKast, I Wanna Dance With Somebody by Whitney Houston, Is It Really You? By Loathe and When The Party’s Over by Billie Eilish, Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen. His Vocal range I believe is B ♭2 to F#5 and he has a wonderful chest voice, head voice and scream. I have never hyper fixated on a band like I have with these! Loved the react and Will subscribe and hopefully see many more. 🖤 The trilogy = Seduction. Destruction. Liberation.
Time signature. Is genius. The breakdowns are 6/8 7/8 3/8. Looping back around to the 4/4 cadence. So 16 beat sections. The verses kinda prog it out and meld some of the guitars keeping that same split time signature while other pieces stay more 4/4 8/8. But it all comes back together every 16 beats. The tension reliefs every chorus to make it all 4/4 and smooth. I may be wrong but thats my human attempt to diagnose the genius that is sleep token. 😅
@Ern - During the chorus, at least, I was able to find a consistent-but-very-slow 4/4. Like you said, though, they were doing some WEIRD shit inside of it (which was rad as hell)
If you guys like that progressive style and time changes, as well as really great vocals, that mixes cleans with falsetto and probably the best scream in metal, you should check out Devin Townsend! You’re probably familiar with Strapping Young Lad but you should check out the stuff he did after there’s a huge catalog so trying to pick a song can be difficult so one of my favorites is Higher, and the live at Plovdiv version is amazing!
Heyy, wanna get back to Battle Beast after a long time? I’d suggest their song “Where angels fear to fly”. They have a great music video for this song but I think they are even better live. The best quality live video of this performance is from Graspop 2022. (although they do have these RAW-live recordings which are professionally filmed but they are in a more casual setting) The Graspop video has the whole setlist but “Where angels fear to fly” starts at 18.30 and ends at 23.35. Nope, all these metalcore, deathcore & similar bands - they are so boring... Do you know why? Because they're so similar. This seventh string brought them so close together that they became so similar. This style of music brought this so-called wanting to be heavy and deep too close together. As for me, it's a damn commercialism and pressure to be popular, any values from this music do not affect me. btw. you know music, you know a lot more than that. I'm waiting for the others.
