Table Rock Lake is no different than Stockton. The quality of the bass fishing has shockingly declined. Everyone who fishes Table Rock is complaining. I hope the State wakes up soon and attacks this problem on multiple fronts: limits on the number of tournaments, prohibition of catch and keep tournaments, reduced creel limits on all species, and the prohibition of keeping bass during the months of April and May.

Ultimately, I have little faith that the Missouri fish and game officials will act. We all have to keep in mind that state wildlife departments are ultimately controlled by politicians. I doubt our fishery biologists will ever be allowed to take meaningful, effective steps to protect the quality of sport fishing in our state (until it is too late). The commercial interests are too powerful and entrenched to allow any changes that are deemed damaging to tourism (e.g., reducing the number of tournaments) or to the electronics manufacturers and retailers (e.g., controlling/restricting the use of ffs and other advanced electronics). Accordingly, we need to be very suspicious of any purported "studies" conducted by state fish and game departments. The outcome of these studies , if not outright predetermined, will at a minimum be heavily influenced by the politicians and the lobbyists.

As a local her in Grenada, livescope is a factor, having so many guides coming from out of state and taking 2 groups a clients a day is an issue too. I applaud the news, it's gotten out of control when you consider the increasing pressure that all fisheries are under as the human population grows. They need to make it more challenging to catch fish which simply means take a step or two back on what technology is allowed . I have always said that they should scale back on the electronics and force fisherman to rely more on skill and knowledge not just in tournaments but for anyone.

I completely agree with Randy's assessment of the problem and the steps needed to put some limits on this unnecessary technology which is undermining the quality of our fisheries and the wholesome nature of our sport. The resource needs to be protected from a myriad of factors which are working to weaken the very essence of what makes our sport so special. Pretending that this kind of intrusive technology does not or cannot degrade our fisheries is not unlike turning a blind eye to any other type of problem. I also wholly agree with the earlier comment regarding Tablerock Lake; I have fished and enjoyed it since 1974, and I know parts of it very well, and I can say without any hesitation, its not the lake that it once was, and a lot of that impression is based upon what it was 20 years ago versus what it is today. I cannot help but believe that the incessant tournament pressure it receives in conjunction with the advances made in marine technology have not played a role in its obvious decline. This is a matter of responsible management of our natural resources first and foremost so that what we have immensely enjoyed is there for our children and future generations to likewise enjoy. To do otherwise, is simply selfish and irresponsible. Consider how much our natural resources would benefit, if we anglers would donate the same level of money that is currently being spent on the technologies being used to enhance catch rates instead to the organizations and initiatives which are dedicated to conserving and improving our lakes, rivers and surrounding habitats.

Agreed! Depending on the body of water pollution from sewage is a big deal also. Especially systems that overflow during heavy rains dumping raw sewage! I believe numbers of tournaments, numbers of fisherman and pollution are a bigger problem! BTW PA has always had a closed season during the spawn. I personally would love to see all the fish caught in weigh in tournaments be tagged. Then, after the tournaments dead fish attributable to tournaments that constitute some percentage or over, should result in the banning of tournaments by those organizations, until such time it can be proven that these fish can be handled, weighed and released and within reasonable limits live.

@@jameslovelace8958Rant coming… lol feel free to ignore, but this is my primary concern with it as far as the sport goes. I worked my ass off to create a high school trail. These kids don’t know how lucky they are to have the opportunities they have now… They get introduced to sponsors and scholarships are rewarded in these programs. Now dad is scoping them out and telling them where to cast. I was all in on ffs until I saw that really. I’m primarily an offshore guy so I have always used electronics a lot and ffs taught me new things and plenty of things I was completely wrong about… I appreciate all of that, but it’s too much in HS events… and I know that daddy’s money has always bought some advantages but before this a kid with real talent and mediocre gear could still compete and win too. I know because I captained a couple of boys to a win, a 2nd, a 5th and second in AOY points out of a mid 90’s 17’ Sprint with only 7 inch 2D graphs. They would probably have won the 2nd too but I cleaned out the boat and forgot to put the net back in it. 🤤🤤😂 lost a couple of 4lb smallmouth at the boat that day. 🥴 I haven’t captained the past couple years except one event I filled in for someone else… but I saw firsthand what was happening. When I first got mine I took my 9yo just to teach him to throw his new baitcaster… I didn’t even cast. I just played with the graph and pointed and picked backlashes. Lol little bit beat some flat out local sticks and barely could cast. I stayed way offshore so he could just sling it and not worry about being accurate or hanging up much. I figured I would chase some school of white bass or maybe smaller spots. He caught over 17lbs of spotted bass in a 3 hour derby. And heck, I was just starting to figure out ffs myself… I was still playing with the setup and didn’t even have it dialed in good yet… but nobody else had it so… anyway. It bothers me that kids are getting scholarships and endorsements that could launch a dream career just because daddy is good at scoping. Rant over… thanks for listening.

It's a enjoyable job to gather healthy protein for the family. If the state governments would write laws with only that in mind. They would STOP derbys/ tournaments/guide service. In other words, Get the money out of fishing. Protect the fish for the general public that are willing to go out and gather the states natural rescorce for human consumption. Keep it at that. Protect the breeders by size is fine, but by making musky size limit like in greenbay wis. 54" is nothing more than pandering to the trophy hunting egotistical self serving mob that pay lobbyists to do their bidding. It is all about the MONEY! It is not just electronics, fishing pressure with monthly and weekly tournaments is a big issue. There has been a significant increase in the numbers of fishing clubs and tournament fishermen. In those 50 years there were a lot more changes than just the electronics. I'm sure fishermen have said the same thing about 2D, Side Imaging, 360... technology changes.
The price of this hobby is getting out of control and pushing the average Joe out of the weekend worriers that used to fish tournaments for fun. Price of fuel, maintenance, insurance, tow vehicles, boats, tackle...
Some people have to eat, so as long as the fish are not going to waste, I feel that is ok.
If the market collapses there will be adjustments, hopefully for the better. The competition out there is amazing but as long as we keep purchasing these items they will keep increasing the prices and technology will continue to grow.

    • @mikem6571

Please explain your position. How does livescope destroy bass fishing? Are you saying it is killing all the fish because people like catching a boat load of bass and keeping them? Or are you saying it's making it too easy to catch bass? If you're keeping bass to eat, you still have to stay within the bag limits . If you go out to catch fish to eat, you are going to stay until you get your bag limit anyway. If you're using a livescope, you just may get lucky enough to get that bag limit sooner. Either way, you're taking a bag limit. That's why limits are in place to begin with. If your recreation fishing and immediately returning the fish to the water, it doesn't matter if you used livescope or not. I believe that the bigger danger to fish populations as far as tournaments are concerned is bringing fish into weigh-in and then releasing them. I like the catch weigh and release system better. No need to bring them into the weight station and stress the fish out more.

Randy, I work for a fisheries management agency. I don't care if YOU don't need a study to tell you this. WE need studies to successfully defend our management decisions when they are challenged in court. And believe me, any attempt to ban FFS will be challenged in court. We have clear and established legal authority to lower bag limits if we can show that catch rates have increased. We have much less legal precedent, and questionable authority, to ban specific brands of equipment that aren't DIRECTLY used to catch the fish. That's the kind of decision that needs to be taken up by state lawmakers.

Let’s blame the 4 consecutive years of extremely low water during peak spawning time on Livescope as well Randy lol. No one talks about the massive amounts of crappie that get sucked through the spillway during the winter, then add on a low spring where many of the eggs have little chance of a safe hatch, you see where this is going? Also, their “surveys” consisted of asking a few out of staters how many they caught that day. If the numbers of fish weren’t there, how are the guides catching limits? How are guides taking multiple trips out per day without the game warden knowing? There’s few ramps accessible during low water, don’t you think the GW would catch them? Things don’t add up. The shock boat I witnessed survey fish was shocking in 4 fow during August…when we were banging limits of slabs in 20 fow…obviously your survey numbers were low, they weren’t living up there. I’ll be glad to talk facts, not feelings over the situation. Anyone that wants to come jump on my boat at Grenada and show me how easy Livescope is, I’m easy to get ahold of.

The reason it has not been as dramatic is because less people fish for them . As outdoorsmen we have a choice to help/hurt nature .It seems greed drives a person making minimum wage to buy a piece of equipment for no other reason than to pack the freezer . No unit last forever so the next piece of equipment hurts more than the last . Since the age of the bottom flasher this has been true . lake mapping has had the largest effect on fishing in my opinion before FFS .Guides make even the ones that dont master the use of FFS a threat to our fisheries . Ban all electronics on all federal waters and let each state decide for their state waters .

Hey, Randy, do you think the way doug Hannon's way of using technology is sustainable? I mean, he would use sonar to find areas he would fish, mark it with a buoy, turn off electrics, and then just fish? Granted, he thought sonar scared fish, but we know this isn't true because of forward facing sonar and it's "achievements". Now there's a big technology jump between Doug's time and ours, but I think they way he fished could be a standard for professional bass fishing. Some said half tournaments should be no fish and the other half everything is good. What about sonar goes off once you start to make your first cast. Use it to find all the big fish you want but when you fish you only get where you saw them. I would like to hear your opinion on that. But to me if recreational ffs users are devastating fisheries, I know it's a combination of lack of conservation mindedness and handling of fish. Would you want ffs users to register like concealed carry permit where you go to class for or would you want them to pay a conservation fee since they have a greater impact to the fishery? Cuz I don't think at this point you can just ban ffs from recreational fishers.

Just do away with sonar. Or not at all. Personally I only fish a handful of times a year and don't keep the fish anymore. Either do away with all the sonar or extremely limit the catch. I have to disagree with you on just forward facing sonars. I remember the days before sonar and I think caught I more fish then. Love your show God bless and keep on trucking. Robert
