Just a quick clarification note everybody. I referred to the alleged cheater as Curtis Johnson in the video which was my mistake. His name was Curtis Sanders…
There is no excuse for cheaters if you get caught cheating it should be a lifetime ban on fishing tourments and lose your license for 10 years and a hefty fine
Why lose your fishing license? Recreational activities, although tourneys can be considered recreational, have nothing to do with tourneys. The State doesn’t run these tourneys.
@@ThaMo_2234cheating is theft. The state doesn’t run my store either but I expect them to impose a penalty on someone caught stealing from me. Theft is a still a serious crime most places and these big buddy events pay 10’s of thousands in cash and prizes like boats. Losing your license is a rather minor penalty for grand theft.
@@ThaMo_2234because it’s a punishment it’s not meant to be sweet especially when the tournament for a charity for someone who is dealing with end stages of cancer Lifetime loss of fishing for that species is needed
Randy, years ago I was in a Bass club that had around 20 members. Everybody kicked in 50 bucks or so and we had club tournaments. We used the golden rule to measure the fish and golf like score cards to record the catch. Fish were released immediately. You had to sign your partners card and no partners could fish together more than one tournament a year.
Randy-Let’s talk about live cheating….Look at the tournament results with FFS Sonar. Take the top 10% of anglers who are not only really good at it but also fully committed to using electronics. They’re blowing away the median of the rest of the field. So, you’ve got a combination of anglers who are exceptional with electronics and others who still have the skills and experience but are trying to balance both traditional fishing and electronics. The reality is, they can’t compete. The real question is: Do you want fishing to remain about using lures, different techniques, and skill, or do you want it to be all about electronics-just dropping a $2 lure on their head and calling it a day? This issue needs to be addressed. I’m ready to start the fight!
We caught a guy in our club cheating . We have card tournaments and he was changing the numbers on the card when his co angler went to get the trailer . He won 5 straight tournament and angler of the year the last 4 years ! I am the one that caught him .
I quit years ago, complete waste of money!!! I now pond hop and float small creeks and rivers in a kayak with my wife with light tackle and we have a blast! The entire creek is to ourselves!!!
I love tournament fishing I started fishing local club tournaments here in Florida about 3 years ago and I was pretty naive we found out a guy in one of our clubs was buying shiners and putting them in baskets out in the lake and fishing with them free lined . We also caught another guy in a different club that put a 7lber in a cage and used that in a big fish tournament. It’s a shame again I love the competition part of competition fishing but dang man people screw everything up something that could be so fun I can’t hardly do anymore because people can’t be trusted.
I lost interest in tournaments 30 years ago ... I joined a local club and almost every event was won by the same 2 guys ...... I couldn't prove anything but those guys worked a second shift job so they were on the lake during the week ..... I am in agreement with you, the same guys can't possibly win that often. Rather than try to cause a commotion I just got tired of donating my money and quit. Have enjoyed fishing for fun my entire life.
It’s time to make go pro or similar cameras mandatory in tournaments. If you can’t prove it on camera then it doesn’t count. And we can’t say that it is too expensive to do bc we all know we have thousands of dollars tied up in electronics on our boats as it is. I believe a go pro costs like 200 bucks, so thats my opinion on local tournament fishing.
My two cents. ONE: Yes, mostly buddy tourneys have cheaters but even having a co angler does not guarantee no cheating. There was a famous case in MO about 20 years ago where a guy was finally caught cheating. He would tie up fish to dock corners 2 to 3 days before the tournament and then used a crankbait to snag the line that the fish was hooked to. He would tell his co angler that he never wanted help landing each fish. He would cut the original line off when he lipped each bass. He didn't always win but he cashed lot of big checks. TWO: For many years another way guys could win consistently without actually cheating was planting secret brush piles close to large tourney weigh-in release ramps. I'd love to name one guy in particular who at Lake of the Ozarks and Truman Lake won several boats and made a name for himself doing that, but I will let it go. That's harder to do that nowadays (the word has got out plus FFS makes it easy to find new brushpiles). But it is still very much a strategy to stay in the check line because of so many released fish being crowded together and the bigger ones tend to set up on the best ambush spots close by (maybe even more than a half mile away). Oh, but you might say that the bigger tourneys use release boat now days. True, but have you ever seen how far the release boats go? hint...its not very far. Released fish tend to bite better because they are in unfamiliar water and they want to defend the spot that they have just set up on. Have you ever read Roland Martin's book? He used that strategy (cut down small trees and planted them a few weeks before each tournament) way back in the 80s.
For those who have been very consistent in tourneys (1st, 2nd, 3rd) all the time, and then get accused of cheating, it’s not a good feeling, nor is it ethical or fair to be accused for no reason. There’s some folks that literally complain about losing all the time, and then they start pointing fingers at legit champs. I’ve seen innocent people get questioned and accused which is not cool. Actual cheaters, which I think are rare, however they exist. They need to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
I agree. There were 2 brothers who basically owned my lake for bout a decade in any decent money tournaments . Some folks were convinced they were cheating, but who knows maybe they were just that good.
Since I don't fish tournaments I don't have to worry about that. Fishing just for fun eliminates a lot of stress. All I have to worry about is one of those wake boats capsizing my big, deep V Crestliner. Believe me, some of them throw big enough wakes to do it if they catch me broadside.
Would it be difficult to require cheap body or 360° cams on contestants to collect prizes and recognition on larger tournaments? Technolgy has caught up.
I stopped fishing partner tournaments along time ago. Even the Blind draw tournaments are iffy. There is so much technology out there, that cheating at all levels of tournament fishing is wide spread.
Mandatory go pros on each boat installed by judges or marshals. If any technical issues happen where no footage was taken then instant DQ. Or two one on bow and back and able to tap in live feed like ring doorbell cameras
See stuff like this on regular basis in Georgia. And it’s easy to tell because when me and my buddy win a few here and there, there are rumblings of us getting kicked out because the cheaters don’t like getting beat by guys that are legit winning outright. I think they do it as a group around the house. By combining the good fish they caught for the night amongst 2-4 teams and splitting the pot. Because you see the same guys win week in and week out.
I live 20 minutes from west point and from the picture i saw how the fish were red from being in the net i can say ive seen alot of fish weighed in that were red like that makes you wonder.
I’m curious to know what prompted officials to check a random buoy resulting in finding the caged fish. Someone close to the guy must have ratted him out, and rightly so!
Catch, picture, release might help. Minutes before ease out, have some instructions for an object or colored pin, something easy and very identifiable in the pics.
The Co-angler and or Marshal is the only answer. It is always funny to me how winning team anglers simply hate boat and co-angler events. Over the years as my local tournaments have been held and results are often forgotten, I have heard about questionable team tactics that have resulted in winning results.
It was before your time randy, but in BASS in 1974 a man by the name of Dwight Keefer was banned from the 1974 classic and banned from BASS for allowing his partner to weigh caged bass. That was back in the day of boater on boater pairings. They did get caught but no system is flawless
With the cost of the electronics, each boat in the tournament install 360 cameras. If any of the footage is edited, you are disqualified. In the last 30 years the only tournament I completed in was the Bass Pro US Open. I just fish for fun anymore. I tried the tournament thing and gave up a long time ago. The only reason I fished rhe open was because of my son. We didn't win, but it was the best fishing trip of my life.
I hate the direction bass fishing has gone over the decades. I wish all bass tournaments would be abolished. Especially at the professional level and even at the club level. Tournaments have wreaked havoc on the local lakes in my area. In the long run, tournaments were a bad idea.
Very sad! How do we know this hasn't been a regular occurrence? This is one reason I don't participate anymore and why I actually wish they wouldn't have these tournaments. I've suspected cheating in the past but couldn't prove it. All I did was make enemies.
I watched a guy fishing a small club tournament snag a fish that I had seen floating half dead, snag him and weigh the fish in. I wasn’t fishing in the tournament, so I didn’t report it, but I sure did lose respect for him.
West Point lake. Maybe 50 mins down the road from me. That lake is a far cry from what it used to be. Used to be a great freaking lake now it’s gone to shit
I'm my opinion, if the anglers won, ask each of them separately questions, like who caught the first fish, when did you make your first cull, how many keepers did you catch today, etc.... if there answers don't line up, there you go.
I know of 4 guys here in Missouri. Tablerock, Pomme, and Lake of the Ozarks that cheat our local tournaments. I want to blast there names so bad but they are very popular here and everyonewill take there side. I will get one of them on film next year. I promise you
@WalterTucker-m5r All 4 of them , Polar Bear, Mill Creek night, and some others in Truman and LOZ. They really get nasty at Pomme though. If you pay attention you'll see the same constant 23 pounds or 24 pounds in the spring.
Cheaters suck. Apparently there need to be extra harsh laws written to punish them. Someone needs to create a way to register in a list of tournament anglers so if anyone is caught cheating they can be marked as cheaters.
The buddy tournament could be improved. You place in the top 3 at an event you get an observer angler the next event. And if you’re clever and split the team up. Both get an observer. No creditable competitor would complain.
Just like in tournament golf. You call out someone for bending USGA rules to their advantage, and the tournament director does absolutely nothing because it's an "honor system" which is why I quit competing. A quick talk behind the woodshed is quite effective, and in some cases, should be implemented.
If there are 100 anglers in a tournament, there is not 100 honest, and I think they need to bust up the buddy trails by having draw partners. Not only would it eliminate cheating but the consistent winners would stop. They could still fish as a team in a combined weight as a team but in separate boats.
The one that I saw was totally by accident ,it was two brothers, fishing on the lowest of budgets,I even gave them a few parts,a few of us suspected something, but could never prove it,what they did was have another guy fishing with live bait during the week, then putting them in a big dog crate,he didn't tell them until the tournament day, very sneaky showed them where it was,he wasn't in tournament,I happen to be fishing a bank a hundred yards away, they would take a fish out, hold it up,looked real, well they had won about 6k in two months,I gave a note to a director, they sent a boat out and caught the partner picking up the cage, they made a bunch of money supplementing their income, cheaters just steal other people's income, sucks.
I'm pretty sure I'm getting cheated on , especially in BASS CHAMPS & Texas TEam trail,,, I we are required to record all fish catches I would win more often than not
He was suspected of cheating earlier in the year several times and they finally caught him. Whats so bad is this was a benefit tournament for a guy with cancer. I was at this tournament this past Saturday where this happened.
So why don't the tournament associations ban these guys across the board? I mean they know who they are so why are they not just stopping these guys on the day they they sign up for an event?
One way to stop this cheating! Make every tournament mandatory that all fish must still be alive! Simple fix!! Dead cannot be counted in a weigh in! Second. All contestants must be accompanied with an official.
I still don't get it. Cheating in fishing tournaments has to be an all-time low. It's amazing that folks continue to keep doing this. Once caught, it should be a permanent ban from all fishing tournaments period.
If it takes someone cheating to win a tournament or a little money that just goes to show there not much of a angler or a person and don’t care about there reputation I always just fished them for the competition aspect of it the money was just a bonus if ya got that lucky bite
All money tournaments should be held with major league fishing rules, that means a ref on boat with anglers, all fish are caught and weighed and released where they are caught. Bass master rules caused this type of behavior also making it easy to get away with. Look into MLF rules and tournaments, you will wonder why it's not been like this all along.
Sadly, any competition where a cheater benefits from their cheating almost guarantees the cheating will continue and likely grow in sophistication and magnitude. Video surveillance may help against the casual cheater but on board umpires are likely the only solution against the most motivated cheating angler. Probably impractical to monitor everyone but maybe consider an on board monitor as a matter of protocol for anyone that has a previous tournament win during the course of the season.
Just a quick clarification note everybody. I referred to the alleged cheater as Curtis Johnson in the video which was my mistake. His name was Curtis Sanders…

@@erichildreth7562this guy will likely be known and banned for life now. It takes them getting caught for it to happen, which is what just took place.
@@jasonlance76help us find the video of him trying to pull his fish from the box.
One way to stop this cheating! Make every tournament mandatory that all fish must still be alive! Simple fix!! Dead cannot be counted in a weigh in! Second. All contestants must be accompanied with an official.
Two guys one boat, easy one of the guys videos the other guy landing the fish. Simple
I wish I could join, cannot afford it.
GoPro on every boat
You got to record everything... and I would win more
I still don't get it. Cheating in fishing tournaments has to be an all-time low. It's amazing that folks continue to keep doing this. Once caught, it should be a permanent ban from all fishing tournaments period.
This may sound dumb,
But you could put a slot limit on tournaments, that would make it tougher to cheat
Make it more competitive
Protect big fish
How would slot limits make cheating tougher? Someone could simply put 5 fish in the basket that are of the largest legal size.
Like the Chinese leader says,,if you can cheat go ahead and cheat.
It’s so easy to cheat in bass fishing it’s ridiculous. I think plenty people are cheating and I’m less inclined to fish tournaments anymore.
If it takes someone cheating to win a tournament or a little money that just goes to show there not much of a angler or a person and don’t care about there reputation I always just fished them for the competition aspect of it the money was just a bonus if ya got that lucky bite
For a benefit tournament 🤦🏻
Very sad
An cancer even. Really that is sick.
