  • EP style flies are staples in many saltwater fishermans boxes. And the Mullet style pattern is definitely an important fly to have when fishing in the gulf. Redfish, sea trout, and many other species love mullet. This is more a finger mullet pattern, being so small. You can tie it larger, but I find this 2.5" size is best.
    Mullet tend to have darker colored heads vs the rest of their bodies. Their heads are also large and wide, so you need a wide profile head for a good imitation.
    Also, most mullet tend to have silvery looking eyes, so I find a silver eye works best. However you could use red or any other color you want.
    While this fly does take a long time to tie, it will last through many fish strikes. Its rather durable when tied correctly, and is really effective.
    Here is a list of materials I used to tie this fly, and links to where you can purchase them.

    looks like it would work well with some olives, yellows, and blues added in to imitate bluegill for bass too

      It’s different than this one for sure, but it works well for an injured or dying bluegill.

    Do you think you could switch up the colors and have a good sunfish pattern for bass? Also, really cool mullet pattern. Should work well for blue runners.

      FlyinThruColorado not to answer for McFly but absolutely. Another option would be to tie in all white and color it with markers.

      +Charlie Wilson spot on Charlie! You can tie this in any color combo you want. Both ep fiber and Congo hair have a multitude of colors, and there is always the sharpie coloring part as well.

    I watched several baitfish pattern videos of yours and they look quite good, to the point and attractive.Sorry, I have one criticism. You seem to use different, specialized materials in every pattern. I can not keep an endless supply of inventory in stock; they are usually quite expensive. If you have an endless collection from a flyshop connection this couldwork.For me, I need to stock a few products in a few basic colors and have a collection of sharpies. When I see videos like yours, I just have to modify and adapt. Pretty much, they look alright.I do appreciate your tips and techniques and gradually purchase some of the products that you endorse to stay up to date with best materials.Cheers. Jim

      I’m all about modifying and adapting. No problem there. Use whatever you can, and change it up if you have too. Many of the specialized materials I use are less expensive than the ones in a fly shop. For instance, this fly you commented on uses “Congo hair” instead of EP fiber. EP fibers are $7-9/bag, and Congo hair is $2.50.. but if you have EP already on hand use it. Same with most of my dubbing, it’s from a place called fly tiers dungeon. The subbing is $0.75-$1/bag. When I can, I try to use a less expensive material. But I totally get your concern, and in previous videos I’ve addressed this and told my subs that they should feel free to change out materials, hooks, etc. I’ve even discussed the sharpie thing as well. Anyway, good luck with all of it, and keep tying my friend! :)

      Stuff from fly tyers dungeon is a hell of a deal, I bought some dubbing to make the glass minnows from the one video and ended up buying a lot of material and it's great quality. Haven't tried the Congo hair just because I really like EP fibers but it's probably good to. I buy most everything else I tie with from j stockard or Amazon.

    I use Congo Hair instead of Puglisi too, but it doesn't make wasting so much material feel much better.

    Now I don't Tie nor Fly Fish so my question is from an Avid Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass Fisherman.
    What would happen if you REALLY backed off on the trimming of the fly..? Would it have too much wind resistance to be cast accurately or would I need to choose a larger hook..? I just gotta wonder if the larger profile of a fly that didn't get such a drastic haircut wouldn't fish better...?

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  ปีที่แล้ว

      You would need a larger hook yes, and a heavier fly rod. The fly line weight is what casts the fly. So a lighter fly line will not cast a wind resistant fly as well as a heavier fly line. You can cast large heavy and wind resistant flies on heavier fly lines. So this fly can be cast on a 6wt rod somewhat easily, but something more bulky might need an 8wt fly rod. Hope that helps

    How do you decide whether to tie the material on top of each other or side to side ( your v tie)?

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +som Alexander on the bottom of the fly, its more the v tie, on top you don't need to "split" the hook

      @@McFlyAngler are you trying to tell me that this fly doesn't hold any water? please show us. try to submerge it for couple of seconds then weight it.

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nichtverstehen2045 I didn't say it doesn't, what I am saying is, I cast this well. I am not the original tier of this fly. I have fished this many times, and it does well as a mullet representation. Casts decent. Mullets have fat heads, this pushes water. With the right weight rod this will get out just fine. Can you cast something lighter better? Absolutely. However it doesn't mean this does not have its place in a fly box. Go check out my other EP style flies. I have tied the peanut fly in the past, and with that fly for sure you want sparse. I think I represented that one great as well.
