      @Jacob Maszaros Logitech G29 would be considered entry level. Not much better than what you currently have. CSL elite would be an upgrade from your T80. If you want everything to be better in every way from what you have now, get the csl elite. :D

    Old time sim racer here. In the early 90's Thrustmaster released their first ever racing wheel and of course I bought it. No FF obviously, and they used a bungie cord inside the steering base to give the wheel proper tension. The pedals had cheap springs that would break every few months, literally snap in half. Luckily TM would send out replacements in the mail while I would patiently wait a month for them to arrive. Searching on Ebay only shows the second generation Grand Prix wheel with the thick rim. The one I had was the skinny rim and only 2 buttons, no paddles, no shifter. I really should have kept that wheel set as it would be a good conversation piece displayed next to my new sim rig. 😊

    One thing which always better in a Logitech than its competitors is the quick desk-clamp system...
    2x 2seconds only to clamp on and off the table a Logitech wheel which is important for people who's not get a dedicated rig and use the table for anything else than just sim racing

    • @dannyleeracing
      @dannyleeracing  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is true, the Logitech took 10 seconds to move into place whereas the CSL Elite is a 30 second job. That doesn't bother me but you nonetheless are right, it's a little extra faff because of the extra clamp force.

    Thanks for this honest review - refreshing to hear commentary that upgrading won't simply improve your lap times and that one of the most important reasons to do the upgrade is because it's fun. I think I'll stick with my G29 until the quality and consistency of my driving improves!

    • @dannyleeracing
      @dannyleeracing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For sure the G29 can definitely be fast, I used it for the longest time including in league racing earlier in 2020: th-cam.com/video/b4QJaM9Q8rg/w-d-xo.html - The main rewards for upgrading to a CSL Elite or better are much much higher immersion and excitement with a splash of extra pace and consistency to sweeten the deal.

  • @bugsbugs42
    @bugsbugs42 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I recently made the switch from a Logitech G25 (that I had been using for over 10 years) to the Fanatec CSL Elite wheel base and Pedals (w/ Load Cell). Has it made me faster? I would say there was a couple tenths in it on average, depends on the car/Sim as some cars you need more feedback whereas some you don't. Where it really made the difference is consistency and, as you say in the video, fun factor. Being able to feel more of what the car does allows you to correct micro slides and lockups etc. Much quicker, so it never gets to the point where its causing you trouble. The fun factor really comes from how smooth the FFB delivery is, no notching makes it feel much more realistic and really helps the immersion. The pedals for me made the biggest difference, in iRacing especially cause of how poor the tyre model is lockups can be catastrophic and having the load cell brake where you can actually put some proper brake pressure into the pedal as you would IRL means that you have much more control. The human body can replicate a "pressure" fairly consistently, but it will always struggle with a "distance", so a weak pedal is bad for consistency. Obviously the price difference is fairly substantial, but to me it has been 100% worth it. And +1 on the rig, I made one out of wood and an IKEA chair, the lack of any flex or movement is the key. Nothing wrong with a sturdy desk but you need a way to fix the pedals/chair 100%.

      When I put my mind to it I'll figure out a way to sort my seating arrangements somehow because I totally agree with what you're saying, it's just another missing piece. i went from the G29 for 4-5 years of use, to a thusttmaster TS-PC to save money, then a Fanatec cls elite, and let me tell you as far as the TSPC and CSL elite bases are concerned they are about the same and feel so smooth and powerful. well my new new base broke, so i finally got the CSW 2.5 Motor. this motor leigt feels like the same step up from a CSL ELite base from that logitec. the clubsport V2.5 base is not smooth, it is like GLASS, its so strong my hands can cranp and the delivery is unlike any other wheel ive used by a long shot. i bought a universal hub. tore down all my old wheels including the logitec wheel and thrustmasters, drilled them up and now i have 8 Rims to use on the fanatec motor. i would skip everything and go right to the CSW 2.5 or save up untill you can afford one. I have never felt smoothness untill i drove this wheel. all my other belt drive wheels including the CSL ELite felt smooth, until you feel what actual smoothness is. and the extra 2 Nm of torque feels like 40% more power. its the most realistic driving wheel i have ever felt and the motor can spin the wheel so fast catching a slide is effortless, you just let go and catch it every time. get a CSW 2.5 it is more than worth it. it will change your life. then i got VR and now i am inside the game. life on sim is different now completely. i am inside the cars as far as my brain knows from Vr and the wheel feels like a real car. it feels better than my real life 2014 stage 3 Focus ST and its modded to the point there is nothing left i can do while keeping it a daily driver. any more mods would have to be massive like gutting it ect....

      How much difference do you feel from Logitech pedals to clubsport? I always struggle with braking consistency with the Logitech

    • @ueehurstonsecurity8887
      @ueehurstonsecurity8887 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EOHRyan oh my god the pedals from the logitec compared to the clubsport V3's are like. two entirely different uses. i use Virtual reality and had that with my G920 pedals still hooked up to a thrustmaster TS-pc racer wheelbase and ive always been impressed with the logitec pedals and that rubber stopper in the pedal making it harder to push. the day i tried the clubsport V3 pedals out for the first time in VR, it was like i was pushing an actual cars pedals. they are so much better that it cannot be explained, you have to feel it. i drive a 2014 stage 3 focus ST irl, so its a 6 speed stick and has a clutch. like a 23k car and good bang for your buck. the V3 pedals feel better than my cars. the G920 pedals feel like toy pedals after you use the clubsports. and before using the clubsports i thought the G920 pedals were VERY good and badass. real metal ect. clubsports are nicer than my car. even the clubsport shifter from fanatec feels better than my cars shifter with a COBB 40% shorter throw shifter plate installed on it. the gas pedal even compared to logitecs gas pedal is unreal how much better it is. it has much more travel and resistance so you can modulate it way easier. the brake can take up to like 200 pounds of force, im not even strong enough to brake efficiently with the loadcell turned up all the way. so you can adjust the brake to where you have to REALLY push on it just to hit the sweet spot before it locks up the wheels and you never lock up without ABS. the clutch pedals are just in a two difference ballparks aswell, logitec clutch and gas had no difference. the clubsports clutch has a twostage mechanism on it just like a real clutch, it gets harder harder then when its fully depressed it gets really easy at the end, it has a bite point that you can feel. now my cars real clutch feels much nicer than the V3 clutch only because it has a longer throw to it. the clubsport pedals cluch you dont have to push very far to get it all the way in. but compared to the logitecs its god level better. night and day. the fact i have to compare the pedals to a real car should say something. i wish my gas and brake in my real car felt like the clubsport pedals. but my pedals in my car absolutely shit on my G920 pedals.

    • @EOHRyan
      @EOHRyan 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ueehurstonsecurity8887 Interesting I used to drive an old 2003 Focus ST, the clutch pedal was really stiff on it and the gearbox was like concrete, you had to have a special touch to get it into 2nd gear, every gear change felt great though I loved that car, blew the engine in 2014 and then bought an Audi A4 Quattro, still driving it.
      Yeah in a real car you can really feel what the brakes are doing, it's just like second nature, there is no guesswork.. With the Logitech pedals I feel like I'm just guessing, especially trying to play Dirt Rally 2 I feel like I have no idea what the brakes are gonna do or if the tyres are gonna lock.
      I've been thinking about upgrading my rig but maybe I just need to upgrade the pedals to get something that feels more realistic.

    At the beginning of this year I planned on upgrading from my Thrustmaster TX and took the Fanatec Elite into consideration.
    But there's one fact I really, really dislike about Fanatec: They lock you in (at least kind of) in their ecosystem.
    I have built myself a custom Rim (from a 3drap kit) which I wanted to keep. With the TX base that was never an issue, as Thrustmaster does not care which rim you put on their bases, you just need an adaptor for their ~quick~, err, _slow_ release, connect the rim via usb, done.
    With a Fanatec base I'd have to buy the hub for an extra €200 just to get the base working.
    I ended up buying an 8NM direct drive wheel. ;-)

    • @dannyleeracing
      @dannyleeracing  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is an upshot to the fanatec ecosystem being that the integration of controls and on-the-fly feedback settings is really slick, very convenient. Sometimes I forget to switch profiles between open wheel and GT Cars and being able to do that via the on-wheel buttons is good. But yes, Fanatec is not for the DIYers!

    I just bought the CSL today. I’ve had the G29 for a year enjoyed it but the throttle keeps spiking and it’s frustrating. So I was ready to move on. At least with Fanatec I can get pedals separately.

  • @TobRacer
    @TobRacer 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    8 years old trusty G27 to CSL Elite here. Definitely worth it. But I miss the manual gearbox that was included in the Logitech G27 package. Price for a Fanatec Shifter is the same for an entire G27 setup 10 years ago... So of course I love the Fanatec products but price wise it's like IPhones, you always want the last and the best stuffs. I just have to be patient and save more money to get more products. But yea I get that Fanatec quality is very good, but still props to Logitech for making such a reliable wheel (dirty potentiometers only so just some cleaning needed) with mostly plastic components.
    About overall speed from Logitech wheels, yes you can be fast with them at any game but I think having that extra information through the force feedback can help you being more consistent. I used my G27 in GT Sport with the help of the CronusMax adapter and I managed to get on pretty good FIA splits. (A-S ranks). 10 years old yes maybe, still competitive. Of course when I got the Fanatec, I got a lot better after a while.
    And finally pleasure factor, I fully agree with you. I drove the Ferrari 330 P4 in a 2 Hours race in GT Sport, but I loved the feeling of exiting corners with the rear sliding. I don't remember having that feel with the G27.
    Great video thank you :)

    brilliant video. I run a G920 clamped to a desk, no rig (don't have the room for it) and a office chair with wheels, but they have an option to stop them rolling... I have pretty much needed this exact video. My plan was to upgrade to the V3 pedals first, then I was considering the CSL elite wheel. Seeing this confirmed what I thought. I'm slow.. about 5 secs off the best times most tracks in F1 2019. I know this wheel/pedals are no silver bullet, but I think for me they will raise the fun factor a lot, probably get me practicing more and improving.

  • @sneakygloworm
    @sneakygloworm 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Nice one. I've been on the fence about upgrading from a G29 to a DD1. The DD1 is so extreme in pricing and I couldn't find any comparisons between G29 and Fanatec's belt driven bases. I can't justify the big difference in cost between Belt driven and DD. Glad you made this vid as it cements my decision to go belt driven first and save cost. Many Thanks.

    • @dannyleeracing
      @dannyleeracing  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Going straight to a DD1 would definitely be going all-in. By all means you will be getting a significant upgrade if you stick to CSL elite or Clubsport Wheelbase if you want the next rung up. Certainly you need to have a rig to run a DD1 and that limits me even without the cost!

      @@dannyleeracing Cheers Danny. Yeah, i've decided to go with the Clubsport 2.5 with the formula wheel and V3 pedals. I didn't initially want to upgrade pedals but my son can have the whole G29 kit. I think you're right. I'm not a pro sim racer so a DD1 is possibly overkill at this point. I'm hearing good things about the belt driven base so it's definitely a good jumping point and it keeps cost down.

I'm sure you'll have noticed at checkout, but if it saves you from opening the box only to realise you're missing something important then it's worth mentioning

      @@dannyleeracing Yeah i did order a simlab gt1 evo from Murray Motorsport in Ireland which has a month delivery time on it. I've managed to balls up the payment method to Fanatec so just waiting for them to confirm my cancellation before i can order again. Fanatec are out of stock until June so hopefully, it will all arrive around the same time. To be honest, although driving quicker is a plus, the upgrade is more about immersion for me. I always found the FF on the G29 to be a bit.....spiky and wooly. All at the same time. It always felt a bit vague to me and I could never properly dial it in without clipping. Curbs just felt like motor vibrations rather than curbs (if that makes sense) which kinda pulled me out of a sim. I'm hoping that the Fanatec gear is more refined and sharper than the old G29. By the way, do use the retention bolt on the wheel? Or do you leave it off. I'm a bit nervous about bending pins in the rim. Also, do you know how long before belts need changing? I can't find that info anywhere.

So far I love the setup, I had to switch to a 35cm steering wheel as I selected their 27cm packaged wheel and it was a little tight around the buttons, and when I was reconfiguring the switch locations on the new wheel, I noticed that there is a joystick plug free in the Xbox hub, but when I asked the company, they just told me I couldn't add a joystick. I've replaced G29 with T300RS with GT pedals like a month ago. Not gonna lie, first impression was mixed, but only because i was so used to feeling gears in Logitech that smoothness of belts was feeling weird at first... Also pedals, especially brake feels quite diffrent... After setting up Force Feedback in games properly, it's a day and night diffrence and i'm very happy with the replacement..... My only worry is that very violent calibration and that it might make the wheelbase break... But maybe not.

    As you so eloquently said, a new wheel won’t make you fast. Practice and training does that. I will say that, having begun in 1999 with Grand Prix Legends, a better setup does make your performance more repeatable and consistent.
    I have a TS-PC and most often let my guests use it as my G27 with Ricmo load cell is like my old motorcycle jacket, it just feels right.
    I am not really faster with the TS but it feels so groovy. For hot lapping yes, but as I race with nearly all details at minimum to lock onto the track I don’t notice as much.
    Another mod for the LogiG2x racers, use a bigger power supply and get a high torque R/C crawler motor. It tripled the torque and speed for a few dollars and a screwdriver.
    Thanks for your insight, you are of course 100% correct.

    Won't make you faster, but it will make you more consistent. Cheap steering setups suffer from dead zones, unreliable consistent inputs, etc. that could throw you off from one lap to the next. You can still get great times, but it will prevent you from achieving those times reliably.

      The rotation of the wheel is much smoother and way more silent (no gears causing whiney gear teeth) but the force feedback is stronger and more likely to cause harder knocks when you do ride the bumps and curbs. To answer this question I have asked the wife, who is often in the room directly below, whether the new wheel is louder than the old one. She says it's quieter. I hope that counts as a qualified answer!

    Im enjoying my Logitech G29 and don't see myself buying another wheel anytime soon. I bough it two years ago, but barely used since I played I raced much better with the controller. Those racing games that I completed with a controller Ive decided to go back and complete them again using the wheel this time. I almost wasted around $1000 for the Fanatec and the inverted pedals. Im glad I didnt after finding some great mods for the Logitech G29 wheel such as a GT steering wheel less heavy than the stock one and the force feedback feels much better, inverted pedals kit and TrueBrake pedal mod. All worth it and has made everything more enjoyable. When Fanatec drop the price for the CSL Elite and the inverted brakes, I'll get one.

    Ive had my fanatec setup for about 1.5 years and I love it.... However I've had nothing but issues and I've only put about 200 hours of use on the equipment. Steering wheel constantly going out of calibration, shifter is misshifting (I'll shift to 5th and it will register it as reverse), my ebrake is constantly atleast 40% engaged at all times and will sometimes get stuck at full engagement. My accelerator pedal sometimes has issue with sensor. Fanatec is willing to help with these issues, but I'm going to have to pay out the ass and lord knows how long I'll be without all my equipment. I spent the extra money on fanatec for quality and reliability.... But I feel like I got a luxury car that requires expensive maintenance. My toy-like logitech g29 never had any issues

      This is a point I raise in my later review - Fanatec stuff is great BUT if you're unlucky and get a defective unit it can be a real pain getting it put straight. All manufacturers get defects but it's how they're dealt with that makes it or breaks it, and from what I've heard it's sometimes awkward.

    I’m making the switch from a Thrustmaster RS-GT, to the same package you have, sans the fancy wheel. Even have a damper for the brake coming, with the performance upgrade. My driving needs help. I do dirt oval, and I’ll go from mid pack, to the slowest on the track when things get slick. I did VRS for a month, but may give it another shot.

    Those of you who are thinking about csl or thrustmaster (tm).
    Tm is ok wheel base and wheel wise. As long as you are on a belt drive base.
    Csl has slightly greater tourqe. Also the load cell pedals are alot better then the tm pedals.
    I wish I had started on fanatec vs the tm stuff. Remember all wheels and pedals will have pros and cons and sometimes qc misses an issue here and there.
    The strange rumbling peple experience from the csl is most likely ffb setup wrong or needing to update drivers on the wheel base.

    I am planning an upgrade from G29 to a Fanatec, in ACC my G29 loses FFB during a race to almost 0 resistance, I tried to calibrate and using different LUT files, can't make it run properly. There is FFB but only for a period of time before it is weaker and weaker. The G29 also is not getting hot which would explain such behavior

  • @kelmo1989

    I got the true brake mod for my G29 brake pedal plus the spacer mods for the throttle to firm it up. When I recently visited a race simulator in Leeds which featured the Fanatec V3 pedals with hydraulic brake pedal, I was surprised that my peasant spec mod felt better than the load-cell setup even with pedal set to minimum travel as I like it. The V3 throttle however completely out-shined my G29 throttle.

      I would certainly say that if you had to do it piece by piece, getting better pedals first would make the biggest difference to consistency coming from G29. But the fun factor when I replaced the wheelbase was a real joy.

    Late reply but how is the noise of the wheel, especially in heavy ffb situations? Comparable to the G29 or much louder?

    • @dannyleeracing
      @dannyleeracing  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The wheel itself is much quieter, there's a lot of clucking and notching from the G29 in normal driving where the CSL is nearly silent. The main difference is that it'll transmit a lot more force through your rig or desk so if noise is a concern then you might want to put some insulation matting down to try and mitigate it. I put some washing machine rubber mats underneath my desk legs to reduce the knocks from mine.

    • @dannyleeracing

      Yes they are! You can just run the pedals with just the wheelbase no issue. You'll need the Fanatec drivers for the pedals and leave the Logitech software on for your wheelbase but this is essentially what I did with my V3s with my G29

    Switching to a stronger, belt driven wheel, will 10/10 improve you on the limit. Especially on the pretty strict behavior of the traction in Iracing.
    Had the same transition from my Thrustmaster tmx to the tspc racer.
    In my Opinion what's more important to a good Wheel is a good pedal set, actually just a good break.
    Getting a set witch uses a load cell gives you so much more confidence. Since it's easier (to me) to remember a certain break pressures, rather then a pedal position and that's accounting even more in stressful situations.

      Absolutely agreed - it's been a few months now and I have to say my 'rate of binnage' is a lot lower and I've definitely encountered many near-misses that I can't imagine would have been detected early enough on the G29

      Personally I think you would stand to have the easiest time with a prebuilt PC from Overclockers (if you're from the UK). Budget will determine what you can get but if you talk to them they should point you to something that fits the purpose. I've never bought a PC from Overclockers but they're one of the big players in the UK at least and should have staff to help. I'd estimate £1000 or above to get something that will do the job to a degree that gives you a verifiably good experience.
