The Waterfall House, designed by Greenbox Design, creatively addresses the challenge of balancing privacy and connectivity in a crowded urban context. Situated in a 560 square-meter area near the Ratchayothin intersection in Thailand, the house is surrounded by apartments, schools, and residences.
Due to limited space, the house is designed vertically, with the common area on the first floor and family spaces on the second and third floors. To mitigate noise from traffic, the swimming pool is located on the second floor, serving as the main family space. The waterfall feature not only adds aesthetic value but also helps reduce outside noise, ensuring privacy for the family.
Privacy is maintained with a tall, opaque wall on the north side, adjacent to an apartment building. This wall also reflects direct sunlight, providing indirect light to brighten the family's rooms. The open side of the house allows residents to appreciate aspects of the city's context.
The architecture incorporates clear building voids for connectivity and ventilation, while the private areas offer sufficient space for clerestory and ventilation. Vertical funnels facilitate natural ventilation by allowing hot air to rise and escape, replaced by cooler air from outside.
The design aims to seamlessly integrate residents into their new surroundings, providing comfort and functionality. The project emphasizes environmental sustainability, with contributions from TSP Innovation for sustainability consulting, Twodee Design & Development for structural engineering, and Studio NDT for landscape architecture.
