I love all the players in the Mosconi cup, despite being Team USA. Regularly, I watch all these guys. So win or lose, Doesn’t matter. It’s interesting to see how the crowd plays a part in this cup
I was just talking about that. Pool desperately needs an Earl or Mike Seigal type that interacts with the crowd. People watched as much to see what he was going to do as the game itself
You can see Earl behave much classy than before. The man definitely has his own controversy in the past for his actions but to see him much more gracious in defeat is a joy to watch.
Him and Shaw are old friends as well which probably helps
I love how the crowd respects him when he called his extension too, no barking like dogs like usual
He’s gracious in defeat now because he knows he doesn’t have the skills anymore so when he loses, it’s kind of expected. And no, not trying to away from Earls legacy, he’s still arguably one of the top 5 players in history. But, as with any game or sport, time takes away some of the skills and you just don’t have what it takes to compete at the highest levels with consistency. There will still be flashes of the legend, like we saw in the first two days, but overall he’s just not at the top anymore. He knows that too, so while him losing still probably pisses him off, he knows he won’t be on the winning side in a singles match very often.
As it relates to 9-Ball and only 9-Ball there’s Earl Strickland and then everyone else. During the 80’s he literally decimated any competition. During the 90’s things got a little tougher, but still he dominated 9-Ball. He won significant tournaments through the early 2000’s. [5 US Open & 3 World Titles]. Jason who?
@@bgjb-r1499 I agree with everything you just said. For the 90s and even a decent part of the early 2000s. But its 2022 now. Earl is not at the top of the current player skill pool. I don't think it's an insult to say that either, its just reality.

Jayson and Earl actually lived together for a little while in NYC. Jayson was coming up through the ranks and was a house pro in same place Earl is. That club paid for Earls apt and when Jay needed a place to crash they put him with Earl. I guess they got along great.

Good team event, and for the most part it’s fairly respectful considering the past. Definitely helping to bring in fans, most league players are loving it, most tournament players are hating it, snooker players are just like WTF!? 😎

One of Earl's most memorable moments was during the 1996 Mosconi Cup when he faced a 21 year old snooker player from England who was a last-minute call up as a substitute player for Team Europe, and had never played competitive 9-ball in his life until that point. The snooker player was such a 9-ball noob that he even fouled on one occasion because he didn't know which ball was supposed to be hit first. Worth watching that video in its entirety just to see the result! 😲

I don't think it's that. He just wants to annoy the US fans that annoy him. Think about it, if there was a closed door match, no fans live or watching on TV, would he have reacted the same way between him and Earl? Certainly not. I feel this year is more of a fans battle than ever.
they've played each other NUMEROUS times already.. Earl demolished Jayson in the Turning Stone Classic 2019.. the allure of playing a legend is over.. plus, Shaw's a legend in his own right

It would be hard to argue Earl not being in the top 5 ever. . Efren of course, Shane VB all in that conversation. But I believe earl to be one of the most influential people in pool ever, gone are the Stricklands, Fats, Siegal's who interacted with the crowd and gave pool a personality. This sport we love is dying, we desperately need an entertainer. A movie would also help, The Hustler, and The Color Of Money did wonders for the popularity of the sport.

I just can't get behind ol' Pop-Belly Shaw... Yeah, the nose picker is a great pool player but, the mockery is disrespectful to the game... And while Earl Strickland is a legend in his own rights, I have my issues with him as well however, he is significantly more graceful than he use to be...
Pool is, at the heart, a "gentleman's game"... Meaning, be classy... Not an arrogant asshole... Doesn't matter if you're a man or woman, show grace rather you win or lose...
