I love the finished product and way you work. Love that your granddaughter was adopted. I have 2 granddaughters that were adopted and we no longer consider them adopted. We feel like God had a place for them in our family. ❤

A long time ago I took a pastel workshop with a very successful artist. She was a great teacher and showed the class exactly how she created her artwork. She projected her own photos onto the wall with a slide projector and traced the image lines onto pastel paper. The finished pieces (like yours) were very different from the photos. Was she cheating? Absolutely not! I'm amazed at your talent & how you can look at a photo and jostle a few lines here & there to create vibrant paintings!

As a watercolorist I am learning so much how you color block in acrylics. So now I dabble in acrylics!!

Leonardi da Vinci and Michelangelo both used the camera oscura, which is a kind of projector. There was a prejudice against using drawing aids, but artists used them anyway. You're in good company.
I love the painting - smell that chlorine 😃

I love this painting for many reasons. First of all, I can see movement in the water. I love that the water is so clear. Your colours are bright, and the whole painting is cheerful. Nothing wrong with tracing. The talent is in applying colour. Thank you for sharing!

I am a simple man, in that the simpler, easier, less wasteful something is to accomplish, the better.
The one technique that is universal it that one layers from the back to the front. And, while I still see a certain measure of that during the process as you paint, I really like your style. Simple, easier than I think, and you only apply the paint you need besides your red base paint. Yet, since it serves a purpose, I can't say it's wasteful. Lol. As far as tracing, you're not replicating anything, you're laying the foundation you find most useful. My head and inner vision for creating is whirling around in there right now. I'm so glad I found something new I can use. There are some paintings I want to try. Thank you. 😊❤

I figure an artist can take whatever risks they want with their art. Within reason, and wisely if they want to get it into a gallery. But in general, taking risks to try new things is how I eventually found my own artistic voice.

I think it is perfectly acceptable to trace your own photo which is already your own art in itself. Great tip on how to trace the image and I love your loose painting style.♥I paint with acrylics and I struggle with this as my brain always goes down the road of detailed realism. I keep meaning to do some timed exercises to see if I can learn to paint in fewer strokes and achieve a more painterly expression of my subject on the canvas. What a lovely memory you have capture of your family. I hope you will show us the larger version when you paint it.

I love this!!! So Inspiring❤❤❤ I’ve done a little painting with acrylic, so not sure how you keep your acrylic palette so usable.. I always thought that acrylic paint could not be kept past a few hours before it hardened and became unusable.

That was a great way to transfer the image - old school rules!! Love the painting and the size of your palette, that makes your paint combos so easy to grab with a large size tray like that, do you cover it with plastic wrap for the next project or ditch the used paints?! These in process videos are great too, thanks❣️

Many times I’ll trace a picture first and do a practice painting and then take the time to draw it out a few times using the grading system. I do a couple more paintings of it and then draw it larger if I want . By then I’ve got a feel for proportions etc. :-) Thank you for showing this!! :-)

I never thought of using chalk … how silly of me!! I’ve always used a soft “B” graphite pencil but the chalk is MUCH easier … and then painting in the lines so it stays there. Brilliant!! Thank you for the tip. Not sure about what projector is good but I’d love to know too.

There are no cheats when creating original art. Tracing is just lines. It's what you do with those lines. No different than using black or greens on your pallette. Tools. We eventually learn to do the drawing we need through tracing as you still need to pay attention to the subject.
By the way, I simply print the photo directly without cut & paste to Word. You can size and do some general ratios.

It is funny that people think tracing or projection is cheating in art. But nobody thinks a construction worker is cheating if they use an electric screwdriver instead of a hand screw driver or a nail gun instead of a hammer. Or a baker using a mixer vs hand mixing, an oven vs a fire pit. I think Art is the only profession that people call cheating when we use tools. Your art - your choice.
