Has the Era of FRANCHISE Rock Bands Arrived? McDonald’s & Star Wars Move On Over!

- Hey everybody!
The Classic Rock bands of the past are getting older! And as past members either retire, or in some cases, pass away, some bands are choosing to replace those past members with younger players more able and ready to endure the endless road of touring.
What bands have been caught using backing tracks while playing live? What band is out there touring without a single member of the original band? Who has sold their music catalogues and for how much? And are bands that have called it quits years ago now re-evaluating the lucrative touring circuit as reason enough to replace past members, and to set out once again as a touring unit to make more money than the original band ever made originally?
It’s seems like everybody and their dog are out touring this year, with some showing less than stellar performances, and some even being evidently guilty of using pre-recorded performances to aid them in their live acts!
Though this is something that would have ended their careers twenty years ago, it seems that current audiences have become more forgiving! Many are choosing to pay very high ticket prices to see their favorite artists whether those artists are capable of fully performing or not!
In tonight’s video, I cover 7 artists who have changed past tactics and members, or who are charging an arm and a leg to see them! Gone are the days of touring, then taking time off to write new material, and finally recording a new album, only to then tour again to promote their newest effort!

I’ve never been happy when bands have few or no original members, especially when a vocalist or player has a distinct way of sounding or playing.
Van Halen is attempting a tribute band tour with the remaining members but can't seem to lock down a set completely
Fleetwood Mac could pull it off when they were still putting albums out, up to 2003.
Money Money Money. The artists know that if they play under a less recognized band name, fewer people will see the show.

I'm 40. I say PanterA in the year 2000 in Texas. To this date, that has been the very best concert I have ever attended. That band was a powerhouse. When they took the stage, smoke came out of the crowd like there was a fire from pot smoking. For extended periods of time, my feet didn't even touch the ground. I caught one of Darrell's guitar picks. By the time that concert ended there were three or four mountains of lost shoes. Ears, nose, eyelids, mouth, underwear, sox, all filled with sand as if I had been burried by a sand storm. Beer cups covered the ground until you could not see any furthe. The medic aid tents had long cues like they were giving money away. My then math teacher took me out of high school to see that show. He even got me a beer...
Yeah, that world, doesn't exist anymore. It's gone. If you weren't there, you are never gonna know. Young people watching the new pantera are gonna think it's just cool but they are never gonna notice the difference and will never know the real thing. Because that band and that world, don't exist anymore.
I pretty much stopped paying attention when ticket prices got over $100. I'm an old guy, so I got to see plenty of shows for reasonable prices. I get it... it's a business, so it's about the money, but it should also be about the fans that got you here. I don't agree with all of your rants but this one was spot on.
This was a hilarious rant. No punches pulled. All well-deserved criticisms. Without a doubt, franchise bands are the future of classic rock. With live shows being the main revenue stream these days, even major acts will be licensing the brand name to new, young players to carry on the legacy (particularly as newer custodians take over the estates).
We are KINDRED spirits. I have been feeling this way about rock bands for about 6 years now.

Well, Michael, you might not like their music but Iron Maiden have been touring non stop all over the world to massive audience (with a pause due to the pandemic) since their inception in the late 70's. Current lineup have been together for at least two decades, (when Dickinson and Smith rejoined the band and Gers stayed.) Although they're in their mid 60's, the band is a class act, attracting a new generation of fans and should not be included in the Fair Ground Act old boys. (and they also abhor using click tracks live).
I need to catch up on Iron Maiden, Pedro! Thanx for the suggestion!
They also write new material too. They're still doing what they've done for the last 20 years.
I think Priest is better about mixing in old catalog while Maiden chugs out the 'Hits" (what you expect to hear).

I'm so thankful I came of age in the sixties and seventies. Back then it seemed like it was all about the music. Now it's all about gouging the fans and raking in as much moolah as possible.
I'm glad that I'm a 60's child where you had great Bands and vocal groups too.Today's Mainstream music in America sucks.

@@bennyscomin I did get mine in advance so I guess they were only $10 for the ticket, but I'm sure I paid a fee to the record store as well. This was the lineup...

Honestly, this was one of the occasions where I was TOO stoned and don't remember much before ELP.
I just have to say as a long time drummer and singer that I totally agree with what you said about bands using click tracks (or any kind of tracks) live in stage. It's wrong I every way. It's lying to the audience, cheating them out of their money, and it is also lazy!
And I'm tired of the argument that clicks help keep everybody together. That is 🐂💩! Developing chemistry keeps everybody together. Using clicks and loops and stems makes you a robot and keeps you in a box. Unfortunately I am in a situation where we use tracks and clicks all the time, and I absolutely hate it. Give me real and raw music. Not this canned Milli Vanilli crap!
Metronomic rhythm just sounds cold and inhuman
I know Steve Gadd has a metronome with him on stage. As far as I'm aware, he only uses it to count off songs or to give him the tempo for any songs that he starts off himself.
One of the best shows I've attended was Eddie Money at the Ventura Concert Theater. A small venue, being an OLD school single screen movie theater with a balcony and stage. But on "Take Me Home Tonight", rather than have a back-up singer come out, he had Ronnie Specter's vocals on a reel to reel on stage. I had no expectations of her actually being at the show, but it was still disappointing. Other than that though, it was a fantastic show.
Well said Shayne…it’s the “chemistry” that develops from the work and unity that lets you know when it’s locked in and flow feels good for all. Now it’s art! If you depend on clicks, well then something is degrading within…

Add to that motley crew (no pun intended) the execrable Guns n Roses, currently playing a few gigs here in the UK.

I went to see a Queen tribute band called "Queen Nation" and halfway through the show the "good" Freddie showed up, a few of the the die-hards went nuts. They truly lost their minds when the "good" and "bad" Freddie performed together. At least it's honest, it's a tribute, no tickets, music at a classic car show.
A lot of the tribute acts are cast by companies that churn them out nationwide like Burger King. They provide the costumes and the tracks they play along with, and it's honestly good clean somewhat pathetic fun. No harm no foul. It's free, part of the event.
The rights to perform as a name band can be purchased in some cases, The Four Freshman still perform, I don't think any of them were on the records. My point is, use the word tribute, you're not really going to see the Temptations, but it's fun to pretend.
Now with McCartney etc. yes it's way too expensive, to me not worth the hassle, but, I'll cut him a break, I mean, he's 80. If the ticket prices prove anything it's that the gap between the rich and the poor is a global embarrassment.
Queen ! Brian May & Roger Taylor should have followed John Deacon's lead and called it quits after Mercury's death
INXS ! They even had a reality show to find a new lead singer. How degrading.
At least with Paul Rodgers and Adam Lambert standing in for Freddy Mercury, Roger and Brian added a plus in the name to let fans know it's different
Brian May and Roger Taylor founded the band, so they have all rights to change members in the band.

Great stuff, Michael. I think that a huge problem is the death of the record industry. The album-tour--album cycle has been broken, so people go for this nostalgia stuff. Yeah, new music gets released, but how many folks buy into a specific artist, or band? Add in the ridiculous ticket prices (which you've alluded to), and a lot of people go for the 'safe bet'. "I could go and see that new band that I've heard so much about, but Kiss are coming to town, and I know their records!".
The record industry is the problem as Michael said these pop stars ( record industry signed)are touring and taking up space that good hard-working bands and musicians could be playing. the younger generation is not being exposed to great rock music just industry pop digital auto-tuned quantized music.
And it's also the record industry that is keeping these old washed up musicians playing or touring with a new band claiming an old bands name.

I am reminded of the “old man yells at cloud” meme here. I miss the old days too, but they are gone, gone forever. As long as these bands are selling tickets, I can’t tell them they shouldn’t be doing it.
Personally I would rather see a good “tribute” band than some of these original groups with only a few or none of the actual members. For me, it’s the music and songs that I love. I have seen some great tribute bands perform .
First off, let me simply say that I’m very happy that your channel is gaining traction. Seems only yesterday The Tribe had a few hundred followers, but now your subscriber count has already cracked 5 digits! A lot of channels dedicated to classic rock are either afraid to or simply aren’t willing to voice honest, unfiltered opinions on the subject. That’s why your channel, Sir, is so refreshing! You’ve given Jann Wenner, the Rolling Stone magazine and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame a passing mention in this video. Would like to know your opinions on the Rock Hall and especially on why so many people are still giving this organization so much legitimacy.
I especially find it funny that certain artists like Steve Miller or Rush go out of their way to mock and criticize the Rock Hall. They fail to realize that this kind of attention is precisely what keeps the Hall somewhat relevant to this day - they play right into Jann Wenner’s hands and in my eyes, they are the ones who end up looking like absolute clowns. Would you agree with that?
I used to have great respect for the RRHOF. Not anymore. It’s no longer Rock n Roll. When Jann Wenner is the bottom line, and it’s his way or the Highway, then it’s no longer credible. Just look over the last 10-15 years, other genres are dominating the inductions. Sad.

Why is Green Day in.... what have they done? Then the artist / bands like Gram Parsons (who started the country rock music that inspired many others including Eagles), Scorpions. Foreigner, TOTO, INXS.....but you have EMINEM and other rap.

What I'm wondering is reflected in my original comment to Michael: Why are people (like yourself) giving so much importance to the opinion of the private club that is the Rock Hall, considering that the Hall's founders never intended it to be a legitimate ruling body? It was merely used to showcase the rock-adjacent A-listers in Jann Wenner's inner circle. The amount of artists in the "I don't care about what the Rock Hall of Fame thinks of me but I'm going to make a big stink about it anyway" crowd is too damn high. Stop giving it attention and it will go away. Take the Mark Knopfler approach and ignore it. Although, from what I've heard, the actual exhibition in Cleveland museum seems quite nice.
Once bands lose certain people there's never the same: GNR for a while; Smashing Pumpkins; INXS; Journey.
INXS and Queen should have changed their name after their original singers died.
The irony is that SP was completely controlled by Billy Corgan and they still lost their mojo as they fell apart.

it seems we are in the end times as far as culture is concerned: 9 out of 10 movies are remakes or revamped concepts, nothing new in fashion so now kids in age and or mind pay top dollars for ripped up pants, music for the most part sucks (tribute bands, remasters and re remasters sell better than anything new), the internet haydays are over and taken over by a few gigantic corporations and even news media are worse than ever.

That’s why I don’t understand why it’s called a “Led Zeppelin” reunion when the surviving three members get together and play. Led Zeppelin ended when John Bonham died. Right?
@@SpiritOf1976 Well, only because the members of Led Zeppelin chose to end it at that time. They could have easily chosen another drummer and continued as a band but I'm glad they didn't. They made the right decision. It doesn't, however, always have to be that way. AC/DC continued after their lead singer died in the same way that Bonham did and went on to have a tremendous career.

I've watched a few vids here and this one made me subscribe. Such truth being spoken! Lol! Hysterical truth too. Coming up with grunge era music in the 90s I was sorta past these classic rock bands but still know enough about them. It's truly sad what's happened to music these days and how much all of these acts have totally sold out. I havent bothered with much new music since like 2005. Just can't stand it anymore.
I saw the Guess Who at a car show in 1980- to my knowledge there was no one left but maybe a roadie! At on time there were three SteppinWolf bands touring none of whom had John Kay.
Here’s a true story for you. I was involved in the music scene in WA state for 20 years.
Goldie McJohn who was the keyboard player in Steppenwolf spent most of that 20 years trying to put out a new version of the band and called it Steppenwolf…
Every halfway decent guitarist, bassist and drummer I knew tried out for that band at one point and the ones that made couldn’t have been more exited.
The problem was the band never went anywhere, never accomplished anything and was forever in the startup phase.
The thing is Goldie was not a great writer or a good band leader, and that’s being polite.

Great video, mate! Here in Australia bands paid their dues touring this massive country by playing the pubs and beer barns. This is how bands like Cold Chisel and INXS cut their teeth and these days are in retirement. There's no way INXS would hit the road again. Now there's The Voice on TV which I despise as well as the now defunct Australian Idol. These shows are destroying music. The "winner" fades rapidly into obscurity and the cycle is repeated year after year. Looking forward to more of your excellent videos.

@@mikej70 American Idol's 2 biggest successes are Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood from the 2000's bit that is a different time and they're the exception.
Adam Lambert I had no idea in 2009 came from American Idol and For Your Entertainment gave me a good taste of his music before 2010 kicked off the next decade and I got to hear his 2nd hit Whatta Do You Want From Me in 2010. Sadly hes only managed a few charting hits since then to avoid being classified a one hit wonder.
Taylor Hicks from Idol only scored one major hit being Do I Make You Feel Proud in 2006 hitting #1 but only ranked #99 on the 2006 year end billboard 100. He flamed out fast becoming to date the only one hit wonder from American Idol

Robert Plant is still doing it right. He has integrity. He chose to not tour as Zeppelin with Jason on drums. Instead he kept his little solo act going. He’d rather play to a small crowd and leave all the Zeppelin hoopla behind him. I love him for it. His solo career is solid. Cheer ✌️❤️🇨🇦

@@Thomasmemoryscentral Not nesessarily. He would rearrange them to suit his present band and his present voice. And he's generally done so with great sucess, I'd say.
@@Thomasmemoryscentral I also saw an interview lately where RP said he gave The Immigrant Song a shot at one of his recent shows…
He said he wasn’t sure what would happen, but all of a sudden here it was, he found the vocal and they got through it great.
But he knows he can’t pull off the vocals required to do the Zep catalog on a regular basis, and doesn’t always care to.
He’s done a great job of reworking the old stuff to fit his current vocal style and capabilities.
I dearly love the guy, Happy recent 74th to The Golden God himself!
Great video. Bands with almost no original members or artists too old to do a decent show should stop touring. Bruce has a red hot band and a great recent album but that doesn't justify insane prices. If you see any of these shows you won't have any money left to see new bands. For example, Larkin Poe are a superb duo making great music. They get no airplay and when they played here in Raleigh they played at a place that holds less than 1000 people. There are so many great young artists that need our support.
counter example: King Crimson's constant line up changes kept frem musically evolving all the way up until the early 2000s.

Totally agree about the motlycrew thing going in and all the other bands to. We can face getting older,it's time these once greatest bands ever need to as well!!

Great commentary. Some artists who have these one sort of member only touring band should just let it go. My older daughter is in college and is interested in seeing The Who on their current tour (she loves Who's Next). We know that Keith left us 44 years ago and John 20 years ago so it is only Pete and Roger left, but at least we know they still put their heart and soul into a show. And with Keith's godson Zak Starkey (Ringo's son naturally) on drums since 1996, Keith's presence is still felt.
Agreed! I think that if there's only, say, one original band member left (example: Mick Jones of Foreigner) the ensemble should be named for the remaining member; for example: "The Mick Jones Band [Plays The Music Of Foreigner]" Dennis DeYoung does that, billing his shows by his name and saying "A Night Of Styx Music" (while managing to sound more like Styx than "Styx" does in its current form!)
@@glennhecker4422 A point of argument one could say for Styx is they got at least 2 original members left and while Dennis is replaced by Lawrence Gowan as lead singer, they're a band that currently got the right to still retain a band name more than Foreigner
Thanks, Michael! I find your honesty refreshing. I'm not wealthy enough to proudly wear that t-shirt which says "I may be old but I got to see all the cool bands." Concerts were special treats. What I saw I was lucky to see. It was nice not to have to spend $100 for most of them, though.

It pisses me off how the majority of foreign artists/bands who come to Japan and play on a tour charge minimum of 100 dollars per regular admission. The Black Crowes, whom I'm a decent fan of, is coming here this November and charging like 120 dollars for the "cheapest" seat🤬 I was actually amazed how affordable and even cheap live concerts were in the U. S. for the most part when I lived there
Its about supply and demand. They tour over 4563 cities in the US and do 5 shows in South America so to compensate the ticket prices are sky high.
But Japan has a fantastic music scene, you definitely shouldn’t look to foreign acts , I’m from Australia, I only wish I could live in Japan just to see the Japanese music scene
@@spinnymathingy3149 Well, you gotta put yourself in my shoes to understand why I listen to Western artists rather than Japnese ones. There are a lot of people who aren't intrigued or interested in stuff from their own country since they grew up watching the same-old things, whereas everything foreign, especially in Japan, is highly valued and respected for their rarity and charm. Since live in Australia, you might be tired of AC/CD, but they are not something we, Japanese, can just find around the corner 🤷🏻♂️
@@kazuthesamurai7346 yes thanks for pointing out your point of view I can now understand , and thinking about how you put it, it’s exactly the way I’m regarding music, new to me and foreign music is difficult to find, and so true I too have gotten tired of my favourite Aussie bands (AC-DC, Midnight Oil, Hunters & Collector, INXS, Cold Chisel,,,, ect. )
But sadly the music scene in Australia (in my opinion) declined after those bands got old in the 80s . Where I’m getting excited refers to my previous comment, as I’ve discovered Japanese rock & metal it’s fantastic to see there are so many current bands creating new and innovative music, I’m hoping some of the Japanese bands might tour Australia one day as I really enjoy seeing live music, (my wish list to see live is , Sokoninaru, Band Maid, Nemophila, Maximum The Hormone, ect).

Stones, Who, Kinks, Floyd with a few private parties thrown in w/Aerosmith, Nicks, Stones "Hartford, Ct. Hilton whole 18th-22nd floors". Even with Larry Bird at a Huey Lewis & The News. Franchise is the right term for what is happening to 'legacy rock'. Back in the 80's, when MTV ruled, I remember people talking about groups passing their name along to new bands or having constant member changes. We thought it would be a good idea for it would allow bands to change their sound and evolve. We didn't envision that a bunch of johnny-come-latelys would just take the name and live off dusty has-been hits and charge a small fortune for tickets. I guess now it's obvious it was not a good idea. But, we believed what we did because we thought rock music was an artform, not a cash-grab. We were so naive.

There y’ go, Steven! You get it! The band’s identity is tied to their artistic statements! New blood is one thing occasionally, but trade-and-tour ain’t doing it for me!
I mean, if it was about the music and artistic integrity then really the argument about “passing names down” makes no sense since it is no longer the same artists. Artists should always have to stand by their own merit and not trade on someone else’s. Replacements happen, but it doesn’t take long to realize when it’s not the same band.
Glad you mentioned Pantera. If you ever need some inside info on them just let me know. I was pretty close to Dime and Vinnie when Pantera broke up.

In the late 80s I went to a small club to see Iron Butterfly - there were no original members but Mike Pinera (Ride Captain Ride) was the lead singer and it was a fun show...
Loved it! As the British would say , "spot on!". A friend posted a pic of the incarnation of The Sweet that is currently touring. Horrid wigs and only one original member.
If you want a good topic to discuss, look what happened to The Little River Band. No original members in the current band and the original members aren’t allowed to use or refer to the bands name. A much later member copyrighted the name and now he has exclusive use of the name.
I'm always old school, Michael! I just saw Elton John in Foxboro, MA.....playing with Nigel Olson and Davey Johnstone!......and they freakin' killed it. Paid only $90/ticket.....they played better than when I saw Elton twice in the mid-1980's.. Bring back the old days! Good to see you back in good form! Ernie
I agree with you, Michael. Some of these bands are franchising their names for sure. Nazareth had a bunch of great hits in the 7Os they toured all around the world I thought when the lead singer left that it would be over but I was wrong. The bassist is touring under the name and still drawing in audiences to see them. Oh, and The Guess Who. who had their big hits in the 6Os and 7Os had a thirty-five-year gap between album releases. The only original member is The Drummer. The singer-songwriter duo of the group still performs but goes under the name of Bachman Cummings. thanks for your inside. sadly I think my days of concert going are over I can afford 5 grand to see them. glad I got to see a bunch in the 7Os for 7 dollars lol
And I’d pay a reasonable amount to see Randy & Burt, but I wouldn’t cross the street to see the drummer’s band! Let them open for Creedence-Revisted!

Regarding artists selling their catalogs, I think they are doing it to simplify their estates and leave less things to fight about amongst heirs. I big, finite, wad of cash can be more cleanly divided and then it's over. Everybody gets a check, no further checks coming, easy recovery. With a cash generating catalog everyone is tied together. Some heirs will want to cash out, some will want to have that continuing income stream, and the door's not just open to conflict, the venue has been set and engraved invitations sent for Major Family Conflict. At least that's what I came up with when Bob sold.
Regarding music cruises, I've done the Outlaw Country Cruise 6 (soon to be 7) times and it's GREAT. A music festival on a cruise ship. These are acts that aren't pretending to be 25 year olds (and the passengers aren't either, mostly), actively still recording and touring, so that helps.

Regarding your hypothetical about The Beatles: They couldn’t get away with that because each individual member of the band was/is iconic. Not replaceable. I don’t think the individual members of Crue or Foreigner or Pantera ever were thought of in that way. Frankly, I was shocked that The Stones replaced Charlie Watts. And toured immediately. Perhaps contract obligations? I will be interested to see if Dave Grohl continues with The Foo Fighters after losing Taylor. I do give a pass to Queen. Adam Lambert is outstanding in his own right and doesn’t pretend to even try to be like Freddie. Brian and Roger can still bring it home. I do cringe a bit when they “bring Freddie in” via hologram………like when Paul did that with John on his last tour.

Ticket prices are nuts it's obscene I'm glad my concert going days were the 80's and 90's.
For older fans to shovel (aka flush) out hundreds of dollars for a ticket to see a Legacy band illustrates it's all about nostalgia and wanting to recapture a bit of our youth. I enjoyed Springsteen's latest album, but there's no way I'd pay for a ticket to his show at today's prices. Iirc my last concert was Yes (Magnification tour) at a winery venue for close to $100 and I thought "I'm done with live shows"
It was in the early '80's, I was in Portland OR at the county fair and who should be there? Poco!! I was excited but the venue was a small size tent and maybe half the original members, plus I had to pay extra to see them play the 45 minute set (though they did play okay, too loud, but okay) and therecwasca lot of emphasis to buy merch after the "show" 😆 )... same with a Turd Urgent, uhh I mean Ted Nugent show at a county fair in the mid 2000's, gotta pay extra and I said nope!

Rock music fans are themselves much of the issue. How many are still on about how good The Beatles or Led Zeppelin were but they couldn't name even one current rock band?
In some countries at least, Australia is one, that leads to a situation where the actual definition of "rock" so far as radio is concerned means music recorded last century indeed the two go hand in hand. Rock stations end up seeing rock as being "any retro music" rather than seeing it as "real band playing guitars and drums".
And so we have sold out stadiums full of crowds seeing a band which peaked in the 1980's meanwhile someone current but good enough to be signed to a major label struggles to sell enough tickets to fill even a small venue.
True but also young people don’t want to listen to rock. Instead everyone wants to listen to synthesized vocals and tepid, quiet beats. It doesn’t matter what specific genre; everything is simplified to a handful of notes on loop on the computer and a metronome as your drums. There’s your instruments. Music you play is simply not popular. And the other part is that those few who actually do play in a band are all scream metal, where they just growl and scream and strum and wildly bang as fast as they can. Where’s the rock? Where’s the singing in metal?
I’ve been trying to find new music. Of what’s left of rock, it’s out there but it’s not in the US. Actually half of it is in Japan of all places. Go figure.
I will say, although you didn’t touch on them. I saw def leppard (and Crüe) a week ago and def leppard has it going on. Those guys are still killing it🤘🏻

I am so tired of the top 40 classic rock stations that I've gone backwards in my listening to another era, the 1920s and 30s. There were a LOT of swinging music back then.
I posted on another of your videos about my 2 favorite rock bands currently touring. Band Maid, and The Warning. You articulated what’s wrong with rock very well… how about listening to these 2 groups and doing a positive video about something thar’s right in rock? Let’s forget about holding on to the past and focus on great bands playing great authentic rock music right now. Their own, original, compositions that kick ass. I’m not alone, either. There’s a lot of people my age (55) and older who love classic rock-and who have been energized again, after thinking rock was dead, by Band Maid, and The Warning.

Egad my friend, the more I age the further I retreat to when the music was the priority 60's and 70's, and not just the bloody gate. Growing up in Toronto I saw great bands, Max Webster, Rush, Supertramp, April Wine, Moxy, Lighthouse , played my school dance. To me the more I hear about the music scene of today the more I want to retreat to them days, you me and many more miss so darn much. I love original Lynyrd Skynyrd , with Ronnie, Steve, Artimis, Ed King, Bob Burns, Billy Powel, Leon, Alan Collins, Gary R, and have little time for the band using the that name Skynyrd today, nothing but a tribute band in my humble opinion. Yet there are so many, with one original member as you have stated so cleary. I don't want to rant more than I have, so take care, and as John Lennon still reminds us and those fakers out there, just give us some truth, as we are sick to death from these greedy short sighted narrow minded hypocrits, just give us some truth!
I 100% Agree and i remember the glorious story of Robert Plant/Led Zeppelin... They have only played 3 times as one off gigs for charites after the tragic death of John Bonham in 1980... Not long after their awesome runion/benifit concert in 2007 (which was a one off for charity btw) apparently Richard Branson handed Plant a contract worth several hundred million for Led Zep to do a world tour... Plant took the contract ripped it up and walked out with the full support of Page and Jones... This is one of many reasons why Zep are the greatest rock band ever - its called integrity... So many bands like the ones you have mentioned should have called it quits decades ago (Kiss in particular i think) and the artists charging an arm and a leg for shows while being millionares is criminal...
Then why does Plant continue to sing Led Zep songs during his solo tours? He can't do that well at his age

Plus he changes them and does them in different ways to the originals - Plus he contanstantly releases and plays new music - Its not like he is trying to re-create Zeppelin... There is a big difference playing as a solo artist and playing songs from your past than Zep touring without Bonham - Which is the main reason why Plant was/is only happy doing the odd benifit gig with Zep and even those days are over now... And prob the biggest reason is that he is not doing for the money - he certainly wont sell out for a big check...
I love going to a show and only the drummer is the original member. I also love non-guitarist rap acts or country inducted to rock and roll honors.

In particular: I think that the so-called "Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame" should continue to pack their roster with artists that aren't even SLIGHTLY connected with rock! (Hey... when are New Kids On The Block, Vanilla Ice, and Milli Vanilli going to get their propers? Just a thought...)
Real simple. Go support some local live music by an artist with some originals and covers. You will enjoy amazing talent. While they might deserve fame (and fortune), those days are gone, and the odds tougher than ever.

How about shining a light on new up and coming rock bands that are good? There are several that deserve a spotlight...Dirty Honey, Sick Hot, Zach Waters band, Hisbay, Para Volt, The Heavy, etc...
I didn't have a problem with The Who continuing after Moon died. They were incredible at the Concert for New York City in 2001, and their tours were still great. I do however think they should have called it quits quite a few years ago. I also would have liked to have seen Zeppelin continue with Jason Bonham. He has performed with them on several occasions. The Stones are another story. I think they should have called it quits many years ago. Sure they still draw huge crowds, but the music is just not 'up to par'.

I was a fan in the seventies but gave them up in 1979, they could continue with the same make up forever though lol .I have been a fan of Artimus Pyle since he started with, Skynyrd, he never said he was the original drummer but that he played with the original Lynyrd Skynyrd, great way to say it go ahead on AP.

Is the reason no one is recording but they're touring due to the fact that the bands typically don't make much on the recordings? I've always heard their money was made on the road.

There are artists who dislike live shows and don't tour much, but they still make a living. So the whole "we have to tour" excuse doesn't pan out. It's greed. Established artists are not hurting, if they play lots of live shows either it's because they enjoy them or it's because they want to rake in more dough whether they really "need" the money or not.
Franchise bands have already existed for some time. Although not a band in the traditional sense, The Village People have had multiple touring groups featuring maybe 1 original member since the 90s. The Sweet had 2 bands for a long time, one featuring the original guitarist and based in the UK while the other had the original bass player and was based on the US. At various times, there's been 2 versions of Asia, members of the original band and another lead by the lead singer they had in the 90s. Status Quo are still touring the world with 1 original member while their original drummer John Coglhan has "Coglhan's Quo" which mostly just plays pub gigs. For a while there were essentially 2 versions of Yes, although for legal reasons one was called Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman, Howe, but they used the same font as the Yes logo and had posters and album covers designed to look like Yes albums, they played mostly Yes material (this situation actually lead to one of the most unusual tours ever when the 2 versions of Yes joined forces for "Union", a bad album but cool tour). After he was fired, Pete Best started a group called Best Of The Beatles, but that was really more of a dodgy move from a scorned former member.
I bought a copy of classic rock magazine lately and was surprised to see that most of the adds in that magazine were for tribute bands

I always love these videos even if I don't agree with every opinion. I laughed so hard at the Beatles franchise with the wives replacing the dead. To me, these bands aren't ruining rock music, though, they're just getting old, and many of their members are dying or not physically fit to tour. And yes, the franchising thing is weird to me. There are still young bands who rock, and I'll go out to hear them play with passion and feel my ribs vibrate and damage what's left of my hearing. Live music still feeds my soul.
You mention Greta Van Fleet in your videos, and I know they're helping keep rock alive and that they put on a good show. Some artists can still rock hard in their 40's. Jack White, The Distillers. Others that age put on decent shows but sound past their prime to me. Luckily, even though rock is fading as a genre, there are young bands out there playing live every night in my city. So whatever shenanigans the bands of my youth get up to - franchising or the Stones or The Who playing stadiums with 2 surviving original members - the young are keeping rock music going as we old folks fade.

As you said, the only band that could never get away with this is the Beatles. They are John, Paul, George, and Ringo, PERIOD. If it were any other band, Ringo and Paul (or maybe even just Paul or Ringo) could call themselves the Beatles. Maybe even the Fab Four or any of the various tribute bands would call themselves the Beatles. Obviously never going to happen!! (Or if it does I hope I'm long gone!!) All other bands get away with it, including the Rolling Stones, the Who, etc. What really gets me is how a band with ZERO original/classic members can get away with it. Blood, Sweat, and Tears come to mind, but I know, as you pointed out, there are lots of them out there.
Kiss are normally taking advantage of every opportunity to sell you stuff you already have. They missed a live album after Alive 2 and totally missed multiple albums and multiple years that could have been a Live album with songs from 1979 to 1986. As for why this missing live album happened has never been explained. Kiss are fully franchised. The separation of the Kiss characters to The Starchild, The Demon, The Spaceman sets up the band to just swap out who ever to play on forever. The sad fact is The Starchild should have swapped out 15 years ago before his voice went south.
@Maximillian Wylde And that is why I love jazz and progressive "rock" do much. Guys like Steve Hackett and Ian Anderson can still put a great show while being 70 years old. It's all about the music.
Also jazz musicians can play until they are 80 years old and still kill it. They put all those years of experience and knowledge to good use.
On the other hand, Rock/Metal artists tend to age like milk. I can't imagine Axl Rose singing welcome to the jungle in his 60s. Cringeworthy...

I think the people who actually cough up the money to pay to see these acts are even more to blame than the franchise bands themselves, because with only a couple exceptions the franchise haven't lied about anything. They have the legal rights to the name, they are playing the songs people come to hear, and they have a paying audience. While you can say there is something just not right about the situation, at the end of the day people are still buying the tickets, and it's not like we live in an age where it is easy to cover up the facts on who is an original band member and who is on the tour.
Most fans don't know and are shocked at the gig.
I am someone who knowns who the original lead singers are/ and or are original members. Anyone willing to pay top dollar to see Journey, Styx or Foreigner and even The Beach Boys should be ashamed of themselves. Keep buying tickets and then this trend will continue on until there are no original members left in any classic rock bands. I thought " The Truth In Music Law " had passed in nearly all 50 states ??

Just saw Carlos Santana with E.W.F. great show, 3 original members in E.W.F. now, they were good. And Carlos is Carlos, he still got it. He doesn't make your list. He's not ripping off his fans either, like $200 for 7th row floor seats, but you didn't have to pay that much if you didn't mind being further away. It was a great show, everyone left satisfied I'm sure.

With all that is terrible in rock…you must check out Biffy Clyro. They are a three piece from Scotland and make some of the best music in the past decade or so.

Rolling Stone is junk! Michael, Pink once went on a rant about Rolling Stone magazine that absolutely hit all the right points. They went from covering muddy Waters and John Lennon to now boy bands and teen pop and ultra left wing politics.
Rolling Stone was always left of center. But they went from being philosophically consistent to majoring into personalities like Matt Tiabbi (utter asshole). And don’t get me started about their bias against certain bands. Their music critics like King Douchent Curmudgeon himself Dave Marsh, who was nasty, inaccurate utterly close minded and down right dumb. And Marsh’s BFF Jan Wenner who single kept Kiss out of the Rock n Roll hall of fame for years until the pressure was too much and he relented (helping to make its validity and relevance just about non existent). Oh and what those conceited self aggrandizing azz holes have done to keep out bands like Foreigner. Pink is right on the money.

It's not free for the artist, who invests money in equipment and/or recording studio time, as well as putting in many hours of work writing, rehearsing/practicing, and recording the songs! Until the rest of us volunteer to do OUR jobs for free, giving away the goods and labor we offer for nothing instead of earning a living from our work, I don't think we're entitled to demand that the artists give us their music (recordings and/or performances) for free! But yeah, what you're describing with that simple sentence is precisely what more and more people expect and feel perfectly entitled to.
And if they need to lip sink and use recorded tracks it's time to stop it and retire already
I am a huge Pantera fan. If they would have came out and called it a tribute to the Abbott Brothers. I would have been 100% on board with it. But calling it a reunion. It's a far stretch. Now I am pissed with the Abbott family for allowing this to happen. Know full well that Vinny said a couple days after Dime was shot and killed, that "Pantera will never play again after losing Dime." It was Vinny and Dimes band. They created. Anselmo & Brown where both hired into the band. I'm glad you used the Beatles as a comparison. People just laugh at me when I say it, but it is true. If Paul & Ringo tried it. All hell would break loose.

Paid to go see the "Beach Boys" a few years ago. LOL! More like the Beach Boy. Even though Brian was still technically a member, he was nowhere in sight. The funny thing is, Mike looked younger in his late 70's than he did when he was in his 50's. Nevertheless, I'm not sure what was worse, hearing Mike using auto-tune or him trying to keep up with an already greatly slowed down tempo. I had such high hopes for that show yet I left it feeling really old. Youve mentioned how some old rockers like Plant and Loggins have embraced their age, have redefined themselves. I think thats great. But theres nothing more depressing than seeing these guys way past their prime, pretending they arent a day over... 60? 70 now? Daltrey had it right when he sang that classic line from My Generation.

I actually saw the Foreigner 4 tour, with the actual original band oh so many years ago. Shortly before the pandemic, the touring version of Foreigner came to town and a buddy of mine wanted to go. I wouldn't have gone otherwise but since he wanted to go, I went. I knew that Lou Graham wasn't in the band anymore, but I guess I didn't realize that it basically no original members. They did put on a decent show for what it was, playing the hits of course. I didn't hate it, but of course it wasn't the same.

Great video & spot on. I’ve been playing live for years I’m 63 but can still put on a decent show but I’ve also taken care of myself no heavy drinking or drugs. As far as using backing tracks or click tracks...well if you can’t keep time stop playing live. Never liked Vince Neils voice & it’s only gotten worse they should have never gotten rid of John Corabi. As far as Kiss goes...well when two of your members can barely stand up on stage well what are you going to do. Foreigner sound pretty decent to me the reason I don’t have a problem with them is unlike Kiss or Beatles if you ask anybody who was in the original Foreigner they probably couldn’t tell you. I think Jeff Pilsen & Kelly Hanson are good in the band. I do miss the “live days” when you had to know how to play & sing. I’ve seen Tull Purple Cheap Trick Aerosmith etc back in the day & it was much better. Some bands should hang it up as far as Springsteen goes sorry never understood it never liked him.
