What You Need To Know About Retiring in Georgia

Georgia has become a popular destination for retirees because of its mild weather, great tax breaks for seniors, and ample 55+ communities. In most counties in Georgia as a senior, you receive an exemption at a certain age for part or all of the school taxes on your property tax bill, which drastically reduces the amount you pay in taxes. This is a great relief to many who come from northern states where property taxes are much higher. Plus, our mild weather and minimal natural disasters has many who once considered Florida for retirement recalculating that move and choosing Georgia instead.

Cherokee county just changed some of the senior exemption requirements effective January 2025 for age 62 and older. Residency requirements. Must live in the county 5 years for senior exemption, etc. They did this as of May 21st, 2024 by vote of the residents in the county.

Till we make our move to Georgia, I will be 65 and my wife will be 63. We had been looking at Cobb County and Cherokee County, but have added Bartow County and Paulding County to our search list. How does Bartow and Paulding compare in regards to the school taxes ?
