Michael League is a graduate of the same university where my wife got her masters degree, though she missed him by about 6 years. We are going to be going to a snarky puppy show in October however, because they are playing our hometown and it's a Friday
How did I miss this? I LOVE this album ( "Shofukan " , is my favorite track by them still ) slowly working through their discovery) . I love how cinematic they are . One of the things I loved about many Miles Davis albums.....
Snarky Puppy deserves its own label. In a certain way they are unique - at least I don't know a band to compare with. I heard in 2021 for the first time of Snarky Puppy on other friends' youtube channel. Loved it right away. At the same time there was a song by Mark Lettieri on my eclipsed samper, which I liked a lot. I checked on Mark and was surprised, that he's a member of Snarky Puppy. Listening with this knowledge to his song Star Catchers (starting as some kind of heavy blues with great guitar changing the rhythm all of a sudden at 4:30 and you don't know anymore if you hear Earth Wind & Fire or Chicago ... because of the brass section) you can only say : of course, this guy is in Snarky Puppy 😆 You once reacted to Lingus of the We like it here DVD - what you see is how they recorded the whole album - with a certain amount of fans in the studio. In 2022 I wanted to see them live finding out, that their concert was sold out months in advance ... hope they come back one day 🤘
If you like your jazz funk and you don't already own it, I'd recommend Herbie Hancock's Sunlight album from 1975. His vocoder solo work is brilliant, particularly on the title track.
Ever listened to a band called thank you scientist? They're kind of progressive jazz rock. Think the heavier bits of snarky puppy meets coheed and cambria. I think you'll enjoy their stuff.
Hi Jim, Not only a bank holiday in the UK; I think in most of Europe. We call it Pinksteren or Pinksterweekend. I remember the bands name from one of your videos. No idea what they sounded like or what I wrote about them. Sounds nice indeed. I would call it jazz-rock/fusion; all styles in one go. Joe Jackson would use this as background in his songs, David Sylvian also and I love both. Yeah, I like this music.

In Germany we don't have bank holidays ... most of our holidays are in connection with the church ... Ostern, Pfingsten, Christi Himmelfahrt, Fronleichnam, Weihnachten ... only 1st of May and the day of german reunion 3rd of October don't have a religious background. Actually I don't care for the name and the reason ... a day off is a nice day 😀
Try as I might, I can't really get around their jazz sound. It's a genre I've never learned how to appreciate. They're all very skilled musicians, though! 🙂
I like this, I appreciate it, I admire it, I nodded along to it, I even did a bit of air drumming but do I love it? Sadly, no. There's too much old school jazz noodling and self-satisfied funky grooves for me to consider a rub of Snarky Puppy's tummy. The guitar/drum/synth ending was quite cool though. I'll bring my ball to throw on side 2 if there's more of that.
Old school jazz noodling? Could you elaborate on that? Do you mean the solos, maybe? I´m not going to criticise you for your opinion, it´s just that I personally don´t see anything old-school in Snarky Puppy.
@@janlansky4672 It was the horns from the 9 minute mark - a bit of Miles Davis and some Centipede but they did it 50-60 years ago and did it better. I think that counts as 'old school' these days.
@@JimNewstead :) Hi Jim! Getting older and a bit wobbly agn; still listening to music. Thinking of sending you over a PFM recommendation, just to show you what they are up to... a rather nice piece too. Keep up the good work!
Man you have to watch the concert the whole thing is excellent.Great reaction!

Had the good fortune of seeing this brilliant ensemble back in November 2022, here in Oslo. Bloody outstanding!
What an opening. Great record.
Well now I like it here ! Been on a real 70s/80s jazz and fusion kick lately, this was excellent.
Great stuff! I musta been alseep in the 2000's.... another band I missed! Thanks!
Snarky Puppy are absolutely brilliant. Go see them live if you can.

Sweet! This is one of my favorite records in my own collection. It never ever gets old...such a masterpiece.
Amazing band, superb musicians, so glad you're doing this one!
Saw Snarky at Glasto last year. They ended the set with shofukan. Very cool.
Yesterday was Memorial Day here in the U.S. so we assumed you took the day off for that. 🤙
Er... yes! That's exactly what I was doing Walt! Memorial Day 👍🏻

Wow… this is superb…love it…..thanks so much… never heard of these either…cheers
Glad you enjoyed it!
I remember my first time listening to Snarky Puppy and I was blown away, this is such a cool record! Hope you have fun with this one Jim!
Have to say Jim. I've heard of the band before, but never heard any of their music. But I must say, I absolutely love it!!!!😃
Yay! Adding value already 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

Drummer Mr. Larnell Lewis, one of the nicest, most humble and most talented drummer's around. The rest of the band are no slouches either...

Great band, a bit late to the party Jim but nice to have you join in, eventually. 👍

Yeah, it's your version of "growling"!!!! I could say keep trying, but I know it won't make any difference!
@@JimNewstead I did stick through it to the end, at least. The last bit with the drums and guitars playing off each other was pretty good.

Hm. On first listen, reasonable but disjointed. Kept reminding me of sections of Zappa's Grand Wazoo. On to side 2...
