Critics criticize movies as doors to a new experience, they don't take into account where they come from or what goals they have with appearing on the big screen, the main argument of the ratings that critics give is because it is not entirely a movie for all kinds of community, but only for true fans of Mario Bros, if you don't know anything about it You just won't understand anything because they don't really explain how many things are possible, because for the fans it's not necessary, that is understandable, also the fact that the film goes very straight to the point is something highly criticized, but that's how any mario game works, they mark something for you to rescue, and you go and rescue it, as simple as that, they illustrated that in the movie perfectly and the critics didn't take it into account.
The reason why Lumalee (the blue star) says he wants to die, it's because in Super Mario Galaxy they explain that Lumas transform either to galaxies or planets when they die. It's like his only goal in life. That's why.

No lie, when my audience saw the Illumination logo with the Minions, there was a collective groan. That legit made me laugh seeing that everyone was tired of seeing those yellow annoying beings.

seeing the minions in 2 movies was fine, the minions movie was also fairly good I guess... but in a trilogy and a sequel to his own movie it was already exaggerating, and now having to put up with them every time the logo appears is unbearable...
Having Chris Pratt voice Mario and other star stunning cast killed their parts in this movie and the animation was amazing. i agree with that Luigi world deserve it own movie

The Super Mario Bros. Movie was so much fun and as someone who has been a Mario fan ever since elementary school, it is definitely a great love letter to the franchise! I'm really glad that this broke a billion dollars worldwide and will finish as 2023's highest grossing film!

Since no one asked, here's my Pitch for a Luigi's Mansion movie
Opening scene is King Boo getting word of the Mario Brothers, and sending Boos to spy on them.
By now, the brothers are firmly established in the Mushroom Kingdom as the Mario Brothers, and when we first see them now, they’re putting up fliers offering their services.
But immediately, we can see that when someone stops to talk to them, everyone seems to be gravitating towards Mario. Which is fine, and even expected, as people know him as the guy that saved the Kingdom.
But it’s not long before Luigi’s insecurities rear up their ugly heads, to the point where he feels like he can’t even tell Mario about them.
What insecurities exactly? The one’s you’d expect: only being known as Mario’s brother, or the guy that got trapped in a cage that needed Mario to rescue him. Which get worse when someone makes an offhand comment that gets under his skin. It’s essentially a parallel to what their dad said to Mario: about holding Mario back now that he’s a hero.
But here’s the secret: those comments don’t really bother him. It’s already been established that Luigi has been Mario’s #1 fan since before they even knew the Mushroom Kingdom existed. If people gush over Mario more, they’re just repeating what he’s known since they were babies. Why would that kind of talk start to bother him now?
No. For Luigi’s insecurities to be as bad as we’re being shown, it has to go deeper than that.
The real fear is that one day MARIO will see that, and just decide he’s done looking out for him. You thought he was heartbroken when trapped in the cage? NOTHING compared to what happens upon thinking of that.
However long that takes, everything comes to a head when Luigi gets the notice about winning the mansion in the mail, and he decides to go check it out. Whether it’s because he suspects something is up or he’s too distracted by his insecurities, does not matter. What does is that he decides to go alone to prove he’s not just Mario’s little brother.
And I will emphasize this right here and now: Luigi does not blame Mario for ANY of this. He loves Mario the same as he always has, if not more, and it’s that exact love why he’s so scared of losing him.
He shrugs off Mario’s questions as to why he’s going alone, and leaves. Which then prompts Mario to check out the notice himself, and after some research, realizes Luigi’s about to walk into a trap, and runs off to try and stop him.
While all this is happening, we need two different sets of flashbacks, wherever they make sense: flashbacks of them growing up, to show how their relationship changes into what it is now. And snippets of a more recent one, with Mario telling him he’s moving to the Mushroom Kingdom, offering him a chance to come with; Luigi panicking because a) he’s still traumatized by what happened, and b) he’s scared of losing his brother again if he says no.
Eventually Luigi makes it to the mansion, and it plays out like it did in the game. I trust Nintendo’s ability to make sure it stays as true to the game as it can be. It’s still about getting rid of the painting ghosts and all that, but keeps coming back to the insecurities.
And if there's a way to add their Twin Sense to the story, preferably when Luigi finds something of Mario's, that would be AWESOME.
Mario, on his side, is not just trapped in a painting. The painting itself is essentially a pocket dimension where he can see everything that’s going on, as one of King Boo’s cruel torture tactics, but no matter how loud he screams or yells, Luigi can’t see or hear him unless in the throne room, because that’s where the physical painting actually is.
It's revealed the Boos had been observing Luigi for weeks to figure out the best way to mess with him, and while they usually just do what we’ve seen them do in the games, they tried something different because Luigi essentially did all the work for them, and enhanced his insecurities to lure him to the mansion to trap him there.
And of course, when he faces King Boo, he gets hit where it really hurts: the fallout of all those flashbacks: every time Luigi got hurt or was picked on, and Mario stepped in. Or only Moving to the Mushroom Kingdom to make Mario happy. King Boo laughing at him and saying how he’s so weak he can’t even fight his own battles, no wonder Mario got taken so easily.
Luigi starts to believe it, maybe even starts crying, I won’t object, but then he hears Mario banging on the painting, making him look up.
Whatever Mario says here is meant to get Luigi to look back again, and we see a flashback montage. Sure, Mario stepped in at first, but when Luigi got older, he started doing the same. And even had Mario teach him to defend himself, despite the fact that it scared the shit out of Mario every time he fell or got hurt. The very last flashback is of when Mario finally made him talk about moving to the Mushroom Kingdom, and Luigi admitted how scared he was about the whole idea. And you guessed it, Mario gives a bona fide Good Big Brother speech that ends with another Bro Hug.
And THAT is what gives Luigi the strength to get back up and kick King Boo’s ass straight back into the painting where he belongs.
Keep the game’s ending in there, or the fans will riot, then give us a Proud Big Brother moment after they’re home safe.
Then it ends with them hanging up more fliers all over the Mushroom Kingdom, but now we see there’s a new thing added to their services: Boo Hunting.
Oh yeah. And to keep with the first movie's continuity: soundtrack only has music relevant to, not released, the year the game came out.
This would be November 2001, so use your imagination.

Back in the early days of Nintendo, every game came with a small manual that opened with the backstory of the game. In the first Super Mario Bros. game (1985), we were told that Mario and his brother were plumbers who ended up in the Mushroom Kingdom after being sucked into a magical pipe. It's a story that kind of got lost over the years, but it was cool to see this movie bring it back.
There's an official nintendo made mario maker level about their origin. I think the games nowadays imply mario is from new donk city rather than brooklyn though

Nintendo went so hard to drive home the point how much the Mario Brothers love each other.
Literally every scene they have together shows it.
They did so to shut up everyone that keep claiming Mario hates Luigi.
Literally every argument they could possibly make gets smashed to pieces in this movie.
"They come from a broken family." Nope! They come from a big loving family.
"Luigi resents Mario and would turn on him in a second." Nope! Even in Bowser’s clutches, he cant stop singing his praises.
"But not as kids. No siblings are close as kids!" Nope! They were close as BABIES!
"Luigi's a little scaredy cat! You cant rely on him for anything!" Nope. Mario knew otherwise from day one. THAT'S why he pulled Luigi with him to grab the power star.
An explanation for the blue Luma, in case anyone forgets:
When Lumas die, they explode and turn into planets and galaxies.
That Lumas not suicidal, its ready to be reborn!
That’s a great way of looking at it!

I saw this movie in theaters the day it came out, and it was an incredible ride from start to finish. As a long time Mario fan, this was fan service galore. I can’t wait to see what other movies Nintendo cooks up in the future

There used to be a critic that took the intended audience into consideration before giving it a thumbs up or down - Roger Ebert. He gave a lot of kid cartoons a thumbs up cuz he viewed them for what they were rather than judging them on the same level as serious adult films

you know the main criticism i hear with the film is that luigi wasn't in this as much despite it being called the super mario brothers but personally i enjoyed not seeing peach as a damsel and distress and i wonder if any characters should get solo films in the future

luigi’s haunted mansion was my first ever mario universe game and it was also my first gamecube game and i’ve always loved luigi a little more than mario so i would cry SO HARD if they made a haunted mansion movie :,)
Donkey Kong indeed HAS a girlfriend in his games, Candy Kong. And by the way, the 'Skele-Koopas' are actually called Dry Bones, and the small, spiky guys are called Spiny. And the 'bear suit' is actually a tanooki suit, or raccoon suit.

The Blue Star, Lumalee, is my Spirit Animal. Best thing in the movie, 11/10.

when the movie was first announced, I was like ok cool looks like fun. BUT its that lil blue star that pushed the need across the finish line. He was so friggin cute
I saw this on opening day. Literally got away from work early to go watch this with my parents. Got myself the ? Block popcorn tin and even brought my Mario and Luigi caps.
This movie had me smiling from beginning to end. The music, the background references, and even the songs they chose for certain scenes are all things I very much enjoyed. I was most surprised and giddy at the presence of Thunderstruck in the Mario Kart scene, because that song has a bit of significance to me and my Dad, as does Mario Kart! We loved that whole bit!
I stayed through the entire credits, believing something would happen at the end, and the music was just a joy to listen to. Half the audience left before the after credits scene. What fools. 😆
In fact, I loved it so much, I put my name down to have a chance to receive some of the posters and banners the cinema used to advertise the movie. A couple months later, I got the email to say I'd been chosen, and so had my Dad! He got a poster, and I got a different poster, but also one of those huge banners! Like, floor to ceiling banners! I have no clue where I'm going to put it, but it has to be the coolest thing in my Nintendo merch collection, next to my First 4 Figures Luigi statue.
And yes, I would also very much love a Luigi's Mansion movie. Gotta be one of my overall favourite game series.

General consensus seems to be people want Luigi's Mansion next or Legend of Zelda...and I'm personally leaning towards Luigi's Mansion because Luigi has shown SO much potential here alone to have his own movie (and Charlie Day is already totally onboard with the idea, TAKE THE OPPOURTUNITY, NINTENDO!)
I hope The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 gets announced by Nintendo and Illumination.
