  • I was asked by GB News to come into the studio and talk about Durham’s reputation as an ‘Oxbridge reject’ university, and whether it really matters. I accepted the opportunity and used the platform to draw attention to Durham having the lowest intake of state school students in the UK, which in my opinion is much more important. I was also grilled on ‘cancel culture’ and student mental-health while on the panel. This was my first ever live TV appearance :)
Please note: I don't endorse the political leanings of GB News but instead accepted the invitation to be interviewed so that I could challenge some of their views. I was sceptical about appearing on this show but felt i could try to contribute to the discussion in a meaningful way.

Yes, thank you for that "Lucky you"-response! I struggled with depression as a student in my twenties (I'm 47 now). And I wasn't alone. Mental health issues among students is NOT a new problem. It's just (thankfully) more openly talked about these days.
You really handled that and all the other questions really well in the face of a very condescending attitude from especially the female presenter. I don't think I could have stayed as respectful as you did. Bravo!👏

It was sooooooooo annoying when she said ‘but why are they (this generation) struggling? We didn’t struggle’ insinuating that people of today are whiny or snowflaky. Jacks answer of ‘if you didn’t have to deal with it, you are lucky’ was very succinct. The lady was not only oblivious but also you can tell there is a bitterness there from older generations who have a ‘i dealt with shit and just carried on’ mentality. To be honest, people who feel the need to say that often DID struggle and are just projecting because they didn’t have the language and support when they were growing up. I both feel bad for people like that and an also deeply annoyed by them.

There are studies showing the amount of pressure and expectation placed on young people in school is so much higher than it's ever been before. We're just expected to learn so much more so much faster and somehow also have enough time for socializing, recuperating, cooking, cleaning, and basic adult functioning.

hello! i'm not from the UK so am not familiar with the news networks there; just out of pure curiosity to understand the context, I was just wondering what is the view/perspective of GB news that makes you say "was surprised until I realised this was GB news!" are they construed in a certain way in your country? @@celine22712 Hi! I’m not sure where you’re from, but if you’re from the US then GB News is basically the equivalent of Fox News! They’re are a far right leaning news network and like to attack things like “wokeness” and “cancel culture”, as well as tending to be anti LGBTQIA+ (particularly transphobic), against immigration etc. They’re a relatively new news network in the UK (less than a year old) and have basically been laughed at by a large portion of the country. The whole mentality of “oh well I was fine so you must also be fine” is so damaging, and it’s so frustrating to see his efforts to explain the damaging effects it can have on young people and why it’s the case, and then to have a response like that…

That was an amazing interview Jack. You handled yourself so well and really were a great voice for young people. Especially with the mental health talk “we never struggled” it used to be quite taboo to even talk or understand such things I have no doubt the older generation struggled and just hid it more. But in todays society we are becoming more vocal with mental health. Big love man! You’re awesome!

That was very good Jack. We can’t imagine how it would feel to be put so on the spot as you were and to be able to hold one’s own with some of the leading that was being done by the anchors. You held up well and thought before you spoke. Always the sign of intellect.
    GREAT JOB!

Had a very similar conversation with my Step-Mum about dyslexia.
“Well we didn’t have dyslexia when we were at school.”
Guaranteed YOU DID, you just didn’t experience/weren’t exposed to it, and the kids that were dyslexic were probably just labelled as “thick” and told to get on with it.
    Gah these interviewers were unbearable.

It's very interesting to watch two white, university educated men from different generations speak about these topics. It's also interesting that while I am assuming you both have some level of media training, I would imagine the tv anchor has more training, and yet you, a much younger man, come across not only more well spoken, but also more thoughtful, accepting, and open. proud of you!

Omg Jack you handled this so so so well! They tried to push you and ask difficult questions, but the way you answered really confirms that our generation isn’t just “superficial and lazy”. We do believe in what we’re fighting for and we won’t give up, not to people who cannot see anything that is far from what THEY have experienced and the privileges THEY had. Thank you for being clear and keeping it easy at the same time, with a smile on your face!!

You articulate yourself so well, you are smart, you finished university, have lived abroud and are known by thousands of people. And here am I still living with my mom and trying to survive uni during covid xd Not saying that it's a bad thing that I'm not as far in my life yet as you, but it still feels kinda weird xp
