Why you might want to install flipper cooling fans on your Stern pinball machine

  • As pinball machines become more complex and game rules become deeper. The chances of your pinball machine flipper coils overheating becomes more likely. This is more evident than ever with Stern games which not only have deep rulesets but also have flipper coils with less copper. This means the coils overheat more quickly and the flippers lose power. In this video we fit and test the next generation of flipper cooling fans which are available below.

Good video, appreciate the breakdown and install in one video. As a sales engineer, I understand both reasons for cutting back coils to save money but I just wish they kept better coils on all 3 flippers here and ate the money elsewhere. Find a way to package and ship cheaper. The margin profile is determined by the bean counters so the engineering team's hands are FOR SURE tied. I get it, something has to give and these companies are making pins to actually make money. Pennies and dollars matter on economies of scale.

You can understand that if they sell 5000 games and save $50 per game it adds up. But who amongst us wouldn’t pay an extra $50 to have coils that don’t overheat? Personally I think they are making so much money they should just swallow the cost themselves.

@@stevescoolcollectibles5182 Yeah, makin shit quality games only comes back on em in the end. Stern make fun games but they're a bunch of greedy tight arsed bastards when it comes to quality. 🤷‍♂

Very common for flippers to have different size coils. Thanks for the video Gonzo!

Did this on my Deadpool LE. Crazy these things are needed but good. The quieter cooling in the backglass is a nice one as well.

I am not sold until I see surface mount temps and force meters applied to the flippers and a graph over time and flips. I cannot buy something just on feels.

I wonder if adding any thermal compound where it makes contact would help, like when you add a heatsink to a CPU, ill ask that on pinballinfo too

Apparently aluminium flipper bats can also help reduce flipper fade. I'm told that because they don't flex like a plastic flipper bat does they're much more efficient than the plastic ones and ya can turn down the power of the flipper coil and still get the same power from the shot. And because they don't flex or fade ya can get a much more consistent shot as the spot on the flipper that ya need to make each different shot from doesn't change as the game progresses and the coils fade. And I didn't know there wasn't a voltage change from 50V to 5V when the flippers being held up to trap a ball like the old machines did. No wonder the Stern coils bloody over heat. I'd heard that Stern coils can burn out when ya been holdin a ball for awhile and sometimes when I've been holding a ball for awhile on Zilla I think, shit, Stern coils, I better shoot the ball before the coil burns. And now I know why. And It does seem really strange to have different sized coils on each flipper though. Wonder why the hell they do that for? 🤷‍♂

Great show ,thank you for all the info. I love the way you define character, flow and feel.,Like a good or bad feel with a golf club, auto or even a painting. How do we know the coils lose power? Two coils in one package can cause a great deal of mutual inductance. with todays tech we might try two drivers to handle the coils. I was able to reduce the leakage by engineering a snubber circuit, flyback, free wheel, "Diode-Resistor-capacitor". I know the flipper and mounting plate must be strong, however a magnetic componet will radiate into the huge amount of steel around it and create Eddie Currents that oppose the primary source. Thats why transformers have hundreds of small insulated plates. What are your thoughts? Has anybody tried anything in the last 50 years.

Hi Bill . . . I honestly don't know too much about the technical side of things.
The coils certainly lose power as the game gets played longer. The most obvious example was the steep ramp on Avenger Infinity Quest which would roll back down more frequently the longer the was played.

my concern would be creating hot-spots at points on the coil where the clips are, leading to early failure. I'm not totally sold on this.

Quality is way down from what it once was. The sweaty guys on cocaine building these in the 70’s put our modern craftsman to shame.
