Actually, in Dublin this week . In front of the statue of Molly at Suffolk Street, I got to play my tin whistle while my wife sang. We were dressed in costumes from the period. Toursists like us around and could not have been too bad as we were not arrested, flogged, or put in the stocks. Fun memory we will carry.
We sang this as children in 2nd-3rd grade in school.....was one of our favorites as children..... yup...and thar wuz one called get-along home Cindy that we kids loved
In Dublin's fair city Where the girls are so pretty I first set my eyes on sweet Molly Malone As she wheeled her wheelbarrow Through streets broad and narrow Crying, "Cockles and mussels, alive, alive, oh!" Alive, alive, oh Alive, alive, oh Crying, "Cockles and mussels, alive, alive, oh" She was a fishmonger And sure 'twas no wonder For so were her father and mother before And they both wheeled their barrows Through streets broad and narrow Crying, "Cockles and mussels, alive, alive, oh Alive, alive, oh Alive, alive, oh Crying, "Cockles and mussels, alive, alive, oh She died of a fever And no one could save her And that was the end of sweet Molly Malone But her ghost wheels her barrow Through streets broad and narrow Crying, "Cockles and mussels, alive, alive, oh Alive, alive, oh Alive, alive, oh Crying, "Cockles and mussels, alive, alive, oh Alive, alive, oh Alive, alive, oh Crying, "Cockles and mussels, alive, alive, oh
Poor Molly. She worked a better part of her life bringing seafood to the people of Dublin. But unlike others that disappeared with time, Molly is still remembered via her statue and this song.
I swear that growing up, the kids used to sing a song that sounded very much like the first few lines of this song: "My name is Leonardo, I am a retardo, I live on 559 Queen Street" (site of a mental hospital in Toronto, Canada).

I can’t believe I went 56 years before experiencing this amazing song and story.
