The science of MICROCHIMERISM Explained

  • Scientists believe that we each may be carrying many of our relatives within us - LITERALLY carry them. Through a phenomenon called Microchimerism, which refers to the presence of cells in your body that are not originally yours. One way this phenomenon occurs is through pregnancy and research is showing us that women may be carrying cells from their sons in their blood 27 years after they delivered them! The children are also carrying cells from their mothers too until at least early adulthood! But this goes even further, with scientists suggesting that we may even carry within us cells from our uncles, aunts and maybe even maternal grandmothers. What their exact role is remains a mystery for us, at least for now, but some papers are suggesting some possible roles they may play. We still have a lot to learn about these exchanges between family members, as they are the ones contributing to making us who we are!
