  • Scientists sent cancer cells into space. But WHY?
If you’re new here, my name is Roberta, I am a Medical Doctor and a writer.
If you are a returning viewer, thank you so much for coming back!
The International Space Station is a research lab in microgravity where, so far, more than 3700 investigations have been conducted. Cancer cells seem to behave differently in space when compared to here on Earth and this may benefit some of the research happening here on the ground.
Scientists from the University of California in San Diego said in an interview for the BBC that microgravity seems to cause cancer cells to triple in size in just 10 days, which, as per their explanation would take 10 years to see that on the ground. This accelerated growth allows scientists to test potential treatments much faster than they could on Earth, speeding up some of the first stages of their research.
So, let's touch on some of the latest research happening on the International Space Station and see how it may benefit us here on Earth!
