The Modi government Friday announced that former PM P.V. Narasimha Rao would be honoured with the Bharat Ratna. In Ep 531 of Cut The Clutter, originally published on 24 July 2020, Editor-in-Chief Shekhar Gupta dwells on the Congress’ tenuous relationship with Rao - who set India on the path of unprecedented economic reform - discussing the party’s rejection of the former PM, and its rediscovery of him over 15 years after his death.

In these matters one must not be miserly. The "cremation centre" staff will watch gaurd, the entire time....if some money is paid....and ashes should be collected promptly the early morning....

History of Indian National Congress ( INC) does not start with Nehru.
      India was monarchy before 1947.
At the time of the British withdrawal, 565 princely states were officially recognized in the Indian subcontinent,[7] apart from thousands of zamindari estates and jagirs. In 1947, princely states covered 40% of the area of pre-independence India and constituted 23% of its population.
There would not have been a country and nation by the name India without Indian National Congress (INC).
AO Hume, who founded the Indian National Congress, was the son of Joseph Hume, the Radical Scottish member of parliament. AO Hume formed INC as he was a firm supporter of Scottish freedom from England.
AO Hume took the initiative, and it was in March 1885, when a notice was first issued to convene the first Indian National Union to meet at Poona the following December.
Annie Besant, first female president of INC, had built close contacts with the Irish Home Rulers and supported them in her newspaper columns during what are considered crucial years, when the Irish nationalists were forming an alliance with Liberals and Radicals. Besant had met the leaders of the Irish home rule movement.
Annie Besant became the first female president of the Indian National Congress in 1917.
When AO Hume supported Scottish freedom from England, Annie Besant was for Irish freedom from England. Their aim was to fight against England and their common goal to fight against England culminated in the Indian freedom movement.
History of INC does not start with Nehru.
As Congress president in 1929, Nehru called for complete independence from the British Raj.
Nehru and the Congress dominated Indian politics during the 1930s. Nehru promoted the idea of the secular nation-state in the 1937 provincial elections, allowing the Congress to sweep the elections, and to form governments in several provinces.
In 1915, aged 45, he returned to India and soon set about organising peasants, farmers, and urban labourers to protest against discrimination and excessive land-tax.
Assuming leadership of the Indian National Congress in 1921, Gandhi led nationwide campaigns for easing poverty, expanding women's rights, building religious and ethnic amity, ending untouchability, and, above all, achieving swaraj or self-rule.
AO Hume convened the first Indian National Union in 1885 i.e., 30 years before Gandhi arrived in India

It’s a shame that this great statesman is being talked about only after announcing the Bharat Ratna.
PVR laid the foundation for market economy and subsequent govt’s simply continued, improvised and took credit!!
Shameless congress parivar even denied a burial ground for PVR in Delhi next to other PMs.
Running a minority government, still managed to open up the economy. He was under tremendous pressure from IMF, opposition, loss of USSR support and backstabbing within his own party. He was also a retired politician who rose to the top post and worked hard as true nationalist.
Salute to this great, well deserved Bharat Ratna🙏🇮🇳

Post independence after the initial years the party should have been disbanded and a new party or parties should have been created to represent the democratic process in India. So it is INCORRECT to say that the Congress party OWNS ALL THE FREEDOM FIGHTERS !!!

We need to really appreciate Modi for honoring the truly ignored "heroes" of the nation. Whether it is the Padma Awards or Bharat Ratna, the Modi Govt has really honored the nation's most prestigious awards. No doubt, Modi is an astute politician. Narsima Rao is the real reason why most of the Indians are globalised and bragging about gdp. Rest of the khangressis have been a waste. Khangress party still has visionary leaders, all they need is to come out of the influence of Gandhi family

PV Narasimha Rao's biggest gift to India was Manmohan Singh. Nobody expected him as the Finance Minister when India was almost bankrupt.

    But another repost.
    Very disappointing...
I will not renewing my subscription. I am not getting the products for what I am paying. Paying for "un-hyphenated" journalism is important to me, but you need to have journalism. Not 4 years old repost.

Oh I love this India Today edition. I bought this book and it was in my library for a very long time. A memorable event in my young age to see how Indian politicians come together for the country even though they are opposition to each others. Classic case.

Guptaji, what the hell, talk always about freedom movement, those days India was one and everybody rallied behind, jansangh was not a very big organisation then. So, the contribution of BJP or Jansangh to freedom struggle is an absurd argument. Start giving credit to Sushrutha, Aryabhatta, and other sages for the scientific innovations. Why was the congress not dissolved after independence.

PVNR was one of the most erudite PMs, the country had ever had and Congress could ever dream of. The dynasts in Congress whether it was Indira, Rajeev or Nehru can never come close to what PVNR had done for the country. What Sonia did to PVNR is not pardonable...and Congress would pay for this for the next 100 years.
