50:00 Fun fact: On the Challenge Campaign this dialogue changes slightly. When Andy suggests "Throwing everything we have at them", Nell actually agrees with him. That's because in the hard version of the mission you AREN'T given a Transport Copter, so your only option is to fight your way through legit.

That first mission was amazing. I think his only shot after losing the Artillery was to repair all of his units outside of the Medium Tank range and not letting it repair itself. Then he kept going in range of it. I'm surprised nobody suggested to park the Artillery up at the mountains (which are kind of hard to spot at a glance in this version by the way). 2:07:20 - Infantry vs Medium Tank

@@_..E I'm not saying their aren't mistakes, but saying nobody cared is more of a character judgement than purely a quality one. It had a bit of a rough development for 2 obvious reasons.
@tehpwnzorbobz Clone Andy not having an SCOP is an allusion to the fact that AW2 didn't have clones. He should have just been an Andy skin with his own themes and stuff, though. I agree on that.
Even though I do miss the pixel art from the original games, I do appreciate that they clearly didn't just repackage the old games and call it a day. The improvements they made to FoW missions is noticeable and they no longer feel cheap because of it, and the soundtrack for the most part is outstanding. I also like the more streamlined approach to unlocking CO's rather than making you play through the entire campaign to unlock most of them like you had to in the originals.
So incase your curious, Andy is played by Veronica Taylor, who voiced Ash in the Pokémon anime until 4Kids lost the Rights Max is played by Arin from Game Grumps for some reason Nell is played by Christina Vee, who played Shantae, which Wayforward also worked on and was also the Voice Director Hachi is played by Sean Chiplock who played Taka from Danganronpa Sonja is played by Cassandra Lee Morris, who played Morgana in P5 And Eagle is played by ProZD.

Sad I missed the wave on these as a kid, but I'm glad I got to experience them in probably their best itteration now. Here's hoping Nintendo doesn't ghost this series again 🙁
I like how Advance wars warns you about spoilers for choosing the second game, kind of like how StarCraft 1 would warn the player of the same thing if they clicked a campaign out of order.
Seems like Vinny was actively trying to avoid talking about whatever was going on in the chat, that bit at the end too, geez. Hope he does some prerecords cause this video was like.. 2 hours of his first impressions and not much else.
vinny mentioned the movie The Last Mimzy was genuinely so bewildering. It was a movie for kids somewhere in the 00s and 10s which was basically ET but the ET was a little rabbit toy and it was genuinely kinda freaky.
Honestly, I think Reboot Camp is really good as a remake of a game whose series hasn't had a new entry in decades, it's a nice fresh coat of paint and I hope it will serve as a foundation for any new Advance Wars game that might come out in the future. I super agree on the price debate by the way, it should've been $40 like how Metroid Prime, another remake of an old game, was $40. I feel like the $60 tag was more for the hype of the game rather than anything substantial. At least vouchers exist, I guess?
I think thhe 60$ price tag is justified, you kind of get 2 games after all. And im not going to lie.... im just super happy we finally got another advance wars game at all. And on the switch to boot. I also didnt trust that they would acctually release it at all. So im over the moon happy

I genuinely was in shock when Vinny said this game was $60. I thought this game, since announcement, was a budget title that was like $40 MAXIMUM. Nintendo really wants this franchise dead in the fucking ground, jesus
That's typical Nintendo for you. Milk everything for all it is worth at full price. I'm still stunned that Metroid Prime Remastered wasnt $60, considering that modern Nintendo thinks that everything they do is worthy of full price regardless of quality.
"intendo really wants this franchise dead in the fucking ground, jesus" It's #1 on the eShop and selling out in stores, so clearly there's enough demand. Maybe FE's popularity and the split reception of TotK boosted sales? idk.
This whole argument is why Shante took so long to even get popular. I love the graphics, this "omg it is 60???" reminds me when people shit on Windwaker for it's graphics. It looks nice, can it be better? Sure but the game is great.
I don't think it was any kind of censorship The only way to see his gun is in the full body render in the CO screen and even then it was kind of obscured by the UI There is a good chance they just forgot about it Or more likely, they just didn't find it fitting After all, he's the sniper CEO, the revolver was just for the cowboy theme which wasn't really fitting when he looked more like an arms dealer than a cowboy

19:05 actually most of the AW1 cast were given canonical ages in the Japanese 1+2 guidebook. Andy isn't 14, he's 12. Other teenagers in this game include: Sonja who's 14, Drake who's 15, Sami who's 16, and Eagle who's 17, if I'm remembering them correctly.

I’m happy that Advance Wars is being acknowledged after so many years, but It worries me that if the remake doesn't sell well then we'll never get a new game…
I was going to buy it, but the delay killed my hype, sadly. All my friends into this series, not many admittedly, feel the same. Nintendo truly did ruin this game's chances.
Advance Wars was one of the few games I owned on the DS. It's a fun turn-based combat system, playing through the campaign, it has a bit of a difficulty curve. There's a few gundam games I've been meaning to check out that have the same format. I've seen various people mess with the older games in trying to make them multiplayer via a cheat engine and remote access, it seems like a game that would benefit from having multiplayer by default.
I don't have problem with the visuals personally, I get it that people prefer the pixel artstyle because it's really good (and I do prefer the pixel vs this remake artstyle) so I do get where the criticism come from. But considering the whole tone of the game with how colorful and how happy-go-lucky it is, the whole toybox and cartoony artstyle vibes to it actually feel pretty fitting to me IMO... I'm also tired of this "It looks like a mobile game!!!" sentence being used oh so many times as an insult, like how deep do we have to dig the hole of having the most shallow criticisms we can have that hasn't been repeated a hundred times on other games that just want to go for a cartoon-ish artstyle?
There are plenty of games (including a lot of Zelda games) that have done a cartoonish art style without looking like a mobile game. Looking "lke a mobile game" means that the game looks cheap and the assets look like they are generic (maybe from an asset store). In other words most of the assets look generic and cheap.
@@poudink5791 Criticising art is one of the most overused ways of gatekeeping those who think differently from you. Tough luck. All art is subjective and none of it has any inherent value, so the showelware on the app store and any popular games made with loads of effort and money are technically equally worthless. Staring at paint drying is also not any less worthless than watching a movie, in fact depending on the movie watching paint may actually engage your brain more. It's especially hilarious when people value worthless art higher than a human life, enough to stake their life's value on there being more art to consume in the future, and I know how pathetic it is because I do so constantly. We are all wasting our time on entertainment while people get murdered every day and most of us do nothing to help, so let's just let others enjoy art even if we ourselves don't enjoy it. There's a reason "Museum of degenerate art" was a nazi invention. Let's not repeat that. If you support freedom of thought, that includes people liking art you don't.
there's a new thing in this reboot called "quick fires". a "quick fire" is when you send a unit to attack while you select where the unit needs to move! to do this all you have to select a unit then select a enemy unit that is highlighted with the color red! for units that can move and attack: they'll will move close to the enemy unit (if nessecery ) and attack, the place where your unit will stop is showcased by the red movement arrow that alwes apeares when you select an units place to go. for indirect units: they'll just attack like usual
I've never seen this series before but I've known about it because Vinny talked about it on occasion. I played a flash game that reminds me a lot of that and this looks pretty cool. The visuals have grown on me, even if I still do prefer the original by a LOT. Music is mostly hit, but the new CO Power Themes can be a pretty mixed bag. Some are pretty good, others....oof. Biggest surprise has honestly been the 3D rumble. I tend to forget it even exists but this game uses it pretty well.
As far as first impressions go, this wasn't actually too bad. The only thing that bugged me, same as Vinny, is them muting it down to just the backing theme when you do unit purchases. My guess is that they wanted the player to not be distracted while deciding what unit to buy, but they could have just lowered the volume instead of muting it entirely.
I really adore the vibes of this game! didn't expect a game that's basically just military shonen to be so fun and stylish, but the art/music are great and the gameplay looks cool
I feel like I'm the only person who doesn't mind the new visuals, they look like toys to me which is how I've always seen the original sprites, I dunno I like toys and games that look like em
I would’ve loved for the map to be drawn too but I don’t hate the 3D at all. I do agree it does come off as looking a bit cheap at times though but tbh I think part of that comes from choosing a Toy art style in the first place.
I've seen more hate for this game in twitch chat than I've seen in the actual fanbase since the game was announced. I guess some people really just love to stir the pot, huh?
Huh, no “Part 1” in the title. I wonder why? (I’m genuinely curious as I did not watch this live, but judging from the comments, it may have had something to do with chat)
Sometimes Vinny hasn't decided if he wants to continue playing something. There's been times before where one offs ended up getting updates as "part 1". For "spoilers from Vinny at the end though", he doesn't love it, he doesn't hate it. I don't think he has the motivation or drive to play again but I could be wrong. Time will tell.
Orange Star Infantry were more like WWII era infantry with automatic M1 Garands in the og advance wars Orange star infantry look more Vietnam Era with the strap on their helmet and m16s in reboot camp
One thing that i noticed is that there's less tutorial missions than the GBA one, which is great since they force you to play all the field training whether you already played the game or not
Actually, the GBA version of Advance Wars 1 DOESN'T force you to do all the tutorials. It just forces you to do the fog of war tutorial. I haven't played GBA Advance Wars 2 yet, so I don't know if that's also the case there.

I encountered my own "vinePassive" softlock on the first mission. Nell wanted me to use CO Power so I did, but then I couldn't move my units and I accidentally hit an empty tile, opening the menu. I couldn't close it because Nell kept insisting I select CO Power which was now gone from the menu because I already used it... Needless to say, I was unimpressed and I had to close out of the game to keep playing. Also, I keep experiencing weird, almost action buffers when trying to attack units. Its like when your buttons get sticky and skip inputs, but they just straight up don't work until I jostle my camera or right stick around or go to home and back in the game. Very strange and has made the game so far take longer than necessary. I don't experience these issues in map editor.
I pray to Christ that we get a new game off of this. There's a lot of love in this and while it may not be the perfect game, the advertising is insane and I hope the sales boost the interest for Nintendo or Intelligent Systems to make new content. I'm not a proponent of strict banning, but binyot needed to at least call out chat more than he already did. The best way to shut someone up on Twitch is to mock them.
I hope there's more Advance Wars videos/streams in the future This was fun to watch. Its sad there was toxicity in the chat. Both from AW fans (But I guess no new game in 14 years does that) and a weird moral crusade from people who hate how cartoony it is? lol
I do understand why criticism exists for the art style of reboot, it is pretty different from the original, but I hope the toxic peeps don't make people that simply prefer the old style get immediately labeled as toxic weirdos.
Ayayay... I missed the live version but if people were that way, then this might be a skip. Kind of reminds me of the first MOTHER 3 stream and how chat behaved. As an actual huge fan of the series, that makes me a little sad to hear things went that way.
The trend with Ninty seems to be that they release remakes and follow them up with new entries. We haven't heard anything out of intelligent since FE dropped, so it's possible. But yeah, chat was either insufferably negative about everything in the game, or on some weird moral crusade because "War am bad! Children no play!" Like it started as people joking about warcrimes, and then became a bunch of stuck-up losers genuinely complaining that the game was making light of war.
@@greatsaiyaguy8868 I do like the art style but having the map reduced to a small box is so weird, it does make sense due to the grid combat gameplay and the gameboy original resolution being small as shit but I feel like they could have done a better job at it, this feels like they took the easy way out instead of remaking maps to fit a better resolution
I had no clue this game came out after all. Now I'm excited to watch Vinny struggle xd Love Advance Wars so much, I'm glad it's back in some form, even if it's just a remake.
It sucks chat ruined this, there were a few moments of vineblind but that's expected of vinny! We may never know why he thinks the way he does. I'd love a series of this.
To each their own on the art style, but I think the graphics look charming and seem fairly alright. The in-game graphics reminds me of the kind war room simulations you see in TV shows and movies where commanders move figures around on a board, and I feel Wayforward did a decent enough of a job with this overall, considering they're an indie studio. The only real point of contention would be the $60 price point for a remake like this, especially after Metroid Prime's $40 price set such a nice bar, as well as the Nintendo-patented online "functionality". Here's hoping it doesn't take another 14 years before another installment.
I think the graphics are fine but I'd be lying if I said I think they're better than the original. Not really something worth whinging in chat about, though.
The soldiers should've looked like action figures, with visible joints and wackier animations. The toy / miniature visual style works well for Advance Wars since it detaches the game from real-world combat. Like the Green Army Men games, but with GI-Joe.
Picked this up along with the Zelda pre-order using the Game Vouchers thing. It's nice, and a lot of the remixed music, particularly the new CO themes, slap. I can tell a lot of love went into making it. 60 dollars is definitely too much for it, especially with online matchmaking missing. Some sound options would've been nice too.
I think the visuals are decent enough, though I do feel the sentiment about the ol' sprites just feeling better Honestly I might just be refraining from being picky because it's a God damn miracle Nintendo even remembered about Advance Wars Like, imagine how low F-Zero is on Nintendo's priority list Advance Wars is likely even lower That said-and I know it's ridiculous to even be thinking about it when 1+2 Reboot Camp _just_ came out, but if they end up doin' a Reboot Camp for Dual Strike, I think it'd be kinda neat if they took a Wario Land Shake It approach, just have everything properly hand-drawn Hell, they could even make it vaguely like a pop-up book style of sorts That'd probably be _too_ kiddy for Advance Wars, I'm sure a lot of more dedicated/long time fans hate the thought, but I dunno, the ol' sprites [especially of the infantry] always kinda made me think of Paper Mario Plus it might reduce the questions people get about "Are there real in-universe resources being spent on these wars? Why are the COs so chipper about all of this while soldiers are likely dying?" and so on
Advanced wars is somewhat dark at times in the first two entries at least. And then Days of Ruin basically saw trends at the time and decided to become like an weird mix of Fallout and Cod but Advanced wars
There's no way they're gonna make a whole new game unless they test the waters. So as much as I'd love a new game too, this is what we got until then... If it even happens
As someone with absolutely zero attachment to this franchise I think I can give a pretty good non biased opinion about the game's graphics. It honestly looks the same as the game boy games and not saying it as a "Hurr Durr looks like shit" but more in a way that they grabbed the original games, redid the graphics so they look modern but retain the feeling from the old games.
I'm biased, and I like the graphics. I'm a previous AW fan, but I think other fans' complaints lie not with the _graphics,_ but the _stylization._ The units look like toys and made of plastic. I like it personally, and it's clear that Nintendo is trying to appeal to a younger market, and it takes a lot of seriousness out from a very not serious game. But I understand others' complaints that it takes a lot of the grit out of the series, especially considering, like, Days of Ruin. It really does take me back to being a kid with my GBA playing this game, it had a certain childlike charm to it. But some people definitely take it too far. Like, it's a dumb war game, it's not the end of the world.

I know it sounds silly but my favourite advance wars game is days of ruin. I kind of like the darker and more serious tone of that game.
I think thhe 60$ price tag is justified, you kind of get 2 games after all. And im not going to lie.... im just super happy we finally got another advance wars game at all. And on the switch to boot. I also didnt trust that they would acctually release it at all. So im over the moon happy

That's typical Nintendo for you. Milk everything for all it is worth at full price. I'm still stunned that Metroid Prime Remastered wasnt $60, considering that modern Nintendo thinks that everything they do is worthy of full price regardless of quality.
$40? From someone who doesn't play Nintendo games at all, just looking at this game I would have assumed $19.99.
"intendo really wants this franchise dead in the fucking ground, jesus"
It's #1 on the eShop and selling out in stores, so clearly there's enough demand. Maybe FE's popularity and the split reception of TotK boosted sales? idk.
Clearly not if they bothered to bring the series back.
The sales on the Eshop also indicate that it's doing quite well.
This whole argument is why Shante took so long to even get popular. I love the graphics, this "omg it is 60???" reminds me when people shit on Windwaker for it's graphics. It looks nice, can it be better? Sure but the game is great.
It would have been cool to have a filter that switches the game's graphics, like they did in Command and Conquer's remastered collection
That would have boosted this to a must have for me. Both series have amazing soundtracks going for them too.

Honestly I might just be refraining from being picky because it's a God damn miracle Nintendo even remembered about Advance Wars
Like, imagine how low F-Zero is on Nintendo's priority list
Advance Wars is likely even lower
That said-and I know it's ridiculous to even be thinking about it when 1+2 Reboot Camp _just_ came out, but if they end up doin' a Reboot Camp for Dual Strike, I think it'd be kinda neat if they took a Wario Land Shake It approach, just have everything properly hand-drawn
Hell, they could even make it vaguely like a pop-up book style of sorts
That'd probably be _too_ kiddy for Advance Wars, I'm sure a lot of more dedicated/long time fans hate the thought, but I dunno, the ol' sprites [especially of the infantry] always kinda made me think of Paper Mario
Plus it might reduce the questions people get about "Are there real in-universe resources being spent on these wars? Why are the COs so chipper about all of this while soldiers are likely dying?" and so on

There's no way they're gonna make a whole new game unless they test the waters. So as much as I'd love a new game too, this is what we got until then... If it even happens
I don't care about the art style, but not being able to download and share maps online without adding people as friends seems super lame.
Warside looks fire and best part is it will work on steam deck and allow me to make anything even story lines.
you know if chat was this bad with the game, then imagine how bad it could've been if it did came out on the original date when the Ukraine war just started.
@@Austinsanders0312 Everything about this whole situation seems insane to me but I think you're on the money. The fact that people are upset about this of all videogames is just unbelievable to me.
@@Austinsanders0312 I mean you could be right, if this came out on it's original date it probably wouldn't be as bad. But I feel like all it would take is for the wrong people to take note that the very first antagonist you fight looks russian-esque and how they attacked first and it'd just snowball into what it's like now but with slightly more vitriol. And there's enough people on the internet that would try and make some noise about it like they tried with pizza tower.
