Greatly appreciate your information Matt; personally having witnessed an UFO event though many years ago appearing in the western skies with a myriad of colours displayed albeit just for a few moments and disappearing just as soon as it appeared, I can clearly empathise with you for all the negativity you get from the naysayers; so be it; that is life isn't it? you are such an immense encouragement for all of us in the community and your leadership is like a blazing torch in all the darkness. Thank you for all your efforts. God bless you and keep you and your family safe from all forms of coercion.
If I layered lava rock, polyester and those pot scrubbers to a bottle, would that be sufficient as a permanent filter? Or is it because of the fact that it's an airline?
how do you know when to change the sponges? And what to do not to loose all the bacteria? should I exchange the sponges like one every week after a few month?
Galliano Marr, I don't change out the pot scrubbers, the poly I change out when it's visually dirty. The scrubbers can be rinsed off in tank water as needed every few months.
Don't forget people, use a check valve if your air pump is below the aquarium. When you shut it off (or during a power outage) the water will run down into the pump, unless you have a valve.
I have been seeing a few of these types of filters but this is the first one that I've seen an idea of using the larger jar like your peanut butter jar. My thoughts are to have a version of the body of the filter setup and put in my emergency power outage kit. Then when/if the power goes out I am hopefully home to put the media from my Aquaclear HOB filter (1 sponge and 2 bags of the Aquaclear bio rings) into the jar. My battery operated air pump could then preserve the bacteria should the outage last for a longer time while continuing to make the tank a more habitual place for the fish. The reason I'd want a larger jar is so I can undo the setup when power comes on. Does this make any sense? Does it need to be packed tight. Does an air stone matter in this case? Great video!
@Rohit Meshram Thank you so much for writing your comment about flow within the bag/bottle as it hasn't been mentioned in any of the videos I have watched and I am wanting to make one of these filters :)
I found a lot of snow cover this holiday season, however all the different brands I found were all flame retardant which is not aquarium safe. Not sure if yours was the same.
hotrodvdub, I've done some research on it and 100% polyester is what your aiming for. No chemical additives. I've been using this filter for a few months now without issue. That's great advice!
Hopefully you'll answer since this video is older...but I've followed your direction step by step couple times and watched ur video soooo many times..yet my filter won't suck up water from the lid and it Floats...helllppp
I’m just trying to get the gist of it, so this is a diy filter, what about how the pump connection, I’m just picturing how it’s all connected sorry if I sound stupid. I’ve never added any diy stuff to tanks before, I’ve pretty well always had either a built in hidden system or over hanging one or even just one of those large round sponge filters. I do get mixed up with pumps filter definitions n joint functions. Interesting and definitely colourful lol.
would this be good for a bettafish in a 10 gallon? the filter i got with the tank is to expensive and the flow is WAY to strong on his delicate fins. i have live plants as another way to clean his tank as well.
Hello I'm new to this whole fish tank stuff I want to build one of those sponge filters. So you mentioned that good bacteria builds up in the sponges, but how do you go about cleaning it without losing the good bacteria? ?
Maria Rodriguez, with the polyester in the bottom where it’s pulling in water, there’s not really much to clean if you keep up with just replacing the polyester.
Psychotic Aquatics thank you for responding! I haven't got an actual hanging filter yet I only have one goldfish so far in a 10 gallon tank. But will as soon as I have the money for it! I made one but only had the polyester in it with no sponge works great. But as far as the sponges how often do those need to be changed or rinsed off? Which is where the good bacteria collects as you said
Maria Rodriguez You don't wash them because you will be washing away all of the good bacteria that has grown, which would be dangerous for your fish and it could die
Will it work If I had a smaller setup and used activated charcoal to help with the smell I have a baby turtle and the water starts to smell in 3 days after a water change
You know that you are doing nothing without a lift tube to create a vacuum? Without a straight tube, those bubbles meandering up through the sponges and ribbed bottle is doing ZIPPO my friend... and as for your bacteria, if you shut it off, any AEROBIC bacteria is not going to make it without a current. I don't mean to shoot your idea down, but you only took this project halfway.
Psychotic Aquatics entertain me, if you would... with that filter running,. get a dropper or pipette, and give a little squirt of malachite green or methylene blue, and let me see the dye as it travels through that filter. Then I'll post a video of my Hydrosponge with the smallest lift tube I have, and we'll compare?
Psychotic Aquatics thank you for the quick reply! I couldn't find the things I needed for this, but I got a cheap filter for only £5 (most of them are like £15). Thank you though!
Got a question for you, i watched one of your vids, where you hung a mesh bag of ? in a tank to seed it(grow bacteria) Have you ever done that with a sponge that goes into the filter? So if you cleaned one you always have one ready.
Pa. Fish Preacher, I've never done that with sponges. I've only done it with media. I keep about 20 pounds cycled at all times. I don't know how that would work. I'd imagine you'd still grow bacteria in the sponge however.
hi. i made a diy filter using the above principle with pvc pipe(1inch diameter and 10inch long) and a sponge at bottom. (as i had that ready at home). my question is i have kept itvat 45degree angle instead of 90degree angle as you have shown. my query is : will this angle affect the flow of water or the performance of the filter? observation: when open end of pvc is above water upto 1 inch it can expel water.
ROHIT MESHRAM, if you have a Facebook account, you can add yourself to the psycotic aquatics TH-cam page and post a picture there. It’s hard to tell with the description what it looks like.
I have one question if that's ok. I do have a spare filter and was thinking just only using sponges in one then connect it to the second filter with only media like bio home. Is it ok to use as many sponges as I can like 2x course 2x medium 2x fine in one of the cainster or is too much because of blockage or slow water flow. I do have 800lph pump if that helps.
Mr psychotic aquatics I built my bottle filter using your design I didn't use a peanut jar used something similar I steered up the gravel alittle to test it and it doesn't suck up anything I also pushed the bottle just above the water to see if water is getting pushed up and i get nothing.
alainthemechanic, not sure why. The few that I've built pull water. Post a picture of what you have on the Facebook page. It's psychotic aquatics TH-cam
Official Axolotl, you'll definitely need more filtration on top of this filter. Goldfish are on the dirty side and produce a lot of waste. You can't use this as sole filtration unless you build a couple.
i made one with one small pop bottle inside a larger juice bottle with activated carbon in the pop bottle and fluval media in the juoice bottle and it works great
What if the fish are allergic to peanuts?😐
Northernvlogsquad, we have an epipen...lol
Northernvlogsquad haha
Northernvlogsquad LMAO!!! peanut allergy 😂😂😂
It's a serious problem if he didn't have an EpiPen for that the could have died
Northernvlogsquad 😂😂😂😂 wtf

My apologies; I can';t understand how it came to you; It was obviously meant for someone else; regret the inconvenience.
😂 😂
Its perfect for filteration
I love this for replacement of the sponge filter and its so much cheaper
I made 1 & ran it for months. Clean jar out really well before using.

What if I can’t handle peanuts because I’m allergic? I it possible to use a gadarade bottle or other large bottle?
Elaine_LOL any bottle that the pot scrubbies will fit in will work.

Great video!
c squared, I think that's a great idea. I only pack the media tight so I can get as much out of the bottle as possible.
air stone helps (as i have have checked many google pages) . important thing is there should be flow of water inside the bag/bottle.
@Rohit Meshram Thank you so much for writing your comment about flow within the bag/bottle as it hasn't been mentioned in any of the videos I have watched and I am wanting to make one of these filters :)
The fry won't get sucked in the bottom?

Can put the jar filter vertically?
Hopefully you'll answer since this video is older...but I've followed your direction step by step couple times and watched ur video soooo many times..yet my filter won't suck up water from the lid and it Floats...helllppp
I keep watching these diy filters and I am having trouble conceptualizing how water is sucked in by the air being pumped in.
I’m just trying to get the gist of it, so this is a diy filter, what about how the pump connection, I’m just picturing how it’s all connected sorry if I sound stupid. Nice and helpful video! 👍👍
Leilani Cipres, thank you
I Love this idea!
+PEMG HUSTLE WOMAN AQUATICS I still use it today!
would the same filter of small size work in nano betta tank...reply ASAP plz
Sahil Fish world, yes
I liked this video the second you said have some coffee 🤗
I love my coffee
would this be good for a bettafish in a 10 gallon? the filter i got with the tank is to expensive and the flow is WAY to strong on his delicate fins. i have live plants as another way to clean his tank as well.
selena mcintyre it would do fine. I use it when I have a big filter go out (like today). It'll do well with a small load that a beta produces.
I messed up and put the blue scrubbie in last. Will it still work?
Gathering No Moss lol
Hello I'm new to this whole fish tank stuff I want to build one of those sponge filters. So you mentioned that good bacteria builds up in the sponges, but how do you go about cleaning it without losing the good bacteria? ?

Doing great!
@@PsychoticAquatics Whew, good!
Love your channel by the way!
If you use that about how many days or weeks would u have to take it out and clean it from all the debris
Devilman, I've been using it 24/7 in a ten gallon and I've been cleaning it out once a week. Just the poly
How do you clean it without losing the good bacteria?
Taneka Crawford just wash them in water. Pretty simple. Don't use soap.
Will it work If I had a smaller setup and used activated charcoal to help with the smell I have a baby turtle and the water starts to smell in 3 days after a water change
alainthemechanic, absolutely

I don't mean to shoot your idea down, but you only took this project halfway.
Martin Cattani, this is not true. The entire bottle is a lift tube. This filter works perfectly. If it didn’t, I wouldn’t have to clean it out weekly.
Psychotic Aquatics entertain me, if you would... with that filter running,. get a dropper or pipette, and give a little squirt of malachite green or methylene blue, and let me see the dye as it travels through that filter. You do realize this isn’t a sponge filter, right?
Also, can i use this for a 5 gallon tank but with half the size of that filter you have made? (So like 3 scrubbbies and with a smaller jar)
AquaPig, yes you can
Psychotic Aquatics thank you for the quick reply! I couldn't find the things I needed for this, but I got a cheap filter for only £5 (most of them are like £15). Thank you though!
Can you use cotton I stead of polyester
Sterlite Everything, unfortunately no. It will break down and cause more issues than it will save.
Psychotic Aquatics 👍
I like your videos!
I make music, thanks kid!!!
Thanks So Much👍🐠🐟

Psychotic Aquatics sure
Awesome
Can you use cotton?
galaxy star, it's not recommended.
Nice uncle
On body cannot do this
To amp it up even more, inbetween the sponges you could put a layer of carbon and another layer of polyester
Hannah Renee, I don't use carbon in them because I use them in planted tanks. I could use the poly in between though. 😂
Hey question. I'm getting a locker fish and it's for a one and a half gallon tank for 1 guppy will it work for main filtration
Lucy Productions, yes it will
Psychotic Aquatics thanks for the help I will find a way to use the Air pump idk how since I have no way to but I will
I know I'm super late, but is there a way to do this without the air pump?? Please respond.
Kristinna Delatour, you could drill a hole for a powerhead at the top.
Kristinna Delatour u need a power head but if u r unable to do so then No
is that pkastic good in water tho? lol. its a permanent thing in the system so leaching could be an issue.
I’ve used it nonstop for two years now without issue
I have one question if that's ok.
I do have a spare filter and was thinking just only using sponges in one then connect it to the second filter with only media like bio home.
Is it ok to use as many sponges as I can like
2x course 2x medium 2x fine in one of the cainster or is too much because of blockage or slow water flow. I do have 800lph pump if that helps.
I guess the biggest thing is flow. You do need enough to actually filter the water.
I like the pot scrubbys
and do you even need the polyester.. will it work with out it
Sterlite Everything, the biological part will work but you won't catch the fine particles
You will also have to clean it more often
Psychotic Aquatics ok great!
Psychotic Aquatics I will probably find polyester inside of a stuff you animal
Sterlite Everything, if you have a chain store near you like Walmart, get a bag of quilt poly. There are no additives and it would be fish safe.
wonderful filter Design!
ShortNanxious, thank you!!!

looks goood and easy worth of try
Is the here a hole in the top of the filter?
Laura Jackson Strickland, there are holes on the top and bottom.
Psychotic Aquatics thank you I missed the holes in the other side
any cheap alternatives to the filter sponge?
Sabaris 1996, I used lava rock on another that I built if that helps.
Psychotic Aquatics thank you for your instant responses :)
subbed
Hi sir. Just wanna ask if this filtration can get the poops on my arowana tank? thankyou so much.
HannahGerald Villanueva, it will help but it's not going to be the sole filtration you'll need.
Psychotic Aquatics thank you so much!
take the lid off and turn it sideways it will suck in a lot more debris
how to clean this filter?
Remove the cap and rinse in tank water
what size air pump do you recommend for a 2 qt bottle. Is a tetra 60 gallon air pump too much flow?
joel maldonado, what size tank?
75 gallon tank. 1 oscar 12 inches. 2 jack dempsey about 6 inches and a 5 inch gold fish (missing half a tail). oh yeah and a 10 inch pleco.
joel maldonado, you’re going to need a big pump. Are you using it to clear up the water or for filtration?
I'm using it for bio filtration.
joel maldonado, you won’t be able to use it as a sole filtration
can i use this in turtle tank?
Siddhesh Sawant, you may want a couple of these for that big of a load but yes.
👌👌👌
I can never understand why fish keepers have aquariums half full?
I have a reptile tank that I keep half full. Not really meat to be filled to the top.
This Oldman has swag XD 😂😂
Tomato Juice why do I have to be old?
I know right he's actually 20 years right? Lol
You’ll see the buildup on it as you use it.
You should paint the front of the bottle so you don't have to look at those ugly colors while it's in the tank.
Dat intro got me dying
is this method require electricity
Abid Abi, yes...you'll need an air pump to run it.
I have a turtle will the filter work for turtles
Kimberly Ford, it’ll help clear up the water after feedings. It’ll help keep feeders alive as well.
does this need electricity
Cool video! Just subscribed! I have a channel about fish too!
hello ...this safe turtle tank?
james caviness, yes it is
nice idea
Best of luck

gotta have your go juice 😂😄

where did u get that suction cup
Sabaris 1996, these are available on amazon but I had a few left over from old heaters.
Can i use this for my dub pond
I’d say so
Would this work for goldfish
In a 40 gal with two oranda
Official Axolotl, you'll definitely need more filtration on top of this filter. Goldfish are on the dirty side and produce a lot of waste. You can't use this as sole filtration unless you build a couple.

Searched up how to make a home made bong and you showed up ahhhh
Leddas Games, that's what I do!!! I don't think this would work but give it a shot! 😂
Psychotic Aquatics I was joking around but sorry for immaturity lol but I have a question what's the airline tubing for?
You need to run the tubing to a pump so the air will flow, pulling the water through the filter from bottom to top.
it's not for a turtle tank right?!
Arwa Omran, not by itself. You'd need other filters
@@PsychoticAquatics what would you recommend for a turtle tank? I like this idea, what else would I need? Thanks in advance
u should add another airline. two better. each side
"I'm probably going to pack more polyurethane in here."
Uhh polyester fiber is PET (polyethylene terephthalate), not PUR/PU (polyurethane).
Newtype 0085, I don't get much sleep...lol...
LOL by the size of that coffee mug I believe it!
Newtype 0085, it's the nectar of the gods! 😂
Where do you connect the end of the pipe to?
MaryLRB one end goes in the bottle and the other end to the air pump
Do u play roblox? If ya do add me my name is jakolly on roblox
I was thinking that the air pump whisper 10 I use is weak
alainthemechanic, that's probably the problem. I use large pumps.
Just but a bigger one I'll let you know
Got the coffee👍
nice video all
Udayraj Giri, thank you
you have something with no electricity
Tony Montana, in order for any filter to work, it needs flowing water through it.
Waaasuppppp

its work

Ha ha buy peanuts? In a bag? Joking...
breaking bad >>??
How can u connect the pipe end . Chutiya
Jun Aad, which side are you talking about? One end goes in the filter and the other goes on an air pump.
Bigger problem is not cleaning the jar well enough and having salt left which can kill fresh water fish
