    According to a TA manager I am friends with, the real reason the 10th Avenue station wasn't added is that the running time of the 7 would be too long to allow crews to do 5 round trips. It would limit the 7 to a maximum of 4 round trips per crew.

      Also I know one argument was that unlike Hudson yards, this station would only serve existing residents and not create redevelopment... which sounds like a very bad excuse for not building it.

    • @Stanf954
      @Stanf954 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That sounds good to me but it would cut down the existing penalty jobs to just 8 hours. The 7 is a seniority line because of the OT build into the jobs. The 4 tripper would eliminate the $ and have a domino effect in the A Division by pushing ppl out of the remaining OT jobs.So unless you had super seniority on the other lines in either division your ass is going back to 8 hours.

    • @pbatommy
      @pbatommy 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Stanf954 not as much as you think. Four trippers if 10th Avenue station would be opened would make local running time 43 minutes and expresses 40, so they'd pay less, but still >10 hours. The biggest paying jobs currently are the 5 trippers out of Corona Yard, that pay almost 13.

    One thing to also consider (re: 2:53 "…the east-west vlocks in Manhattan are generally longer than the north-south blocks") is that the east-west blocks are longer; the distance between 9th and 10th avenue is longer than that between 1st and 2nd.

    Really glad that you recognize the cost bloat issue and the blatant lack of cost control that the MTA bumbles along with. This is, combined with an outmoded 1950s mindset to rail planning (seriously, demand driven scheduling models in 2022???!?!) are the two largest problems in New York rail transit today. Refreshing to hear somebody talk about this. Area you familiar with Alon Levy's work and that of the Transit Costs Project? They also harp on this issue quite a bit, making poignant global comparisons to places like Italy that have fixed such issues.

    The more I see mta struggle to create new stations the more I wonder how it was built 100 years ago. Maybe it’s time to separate the subway from the bus network to control it better like how it was before it was unified under one company. Because how we have better technology and supposed skills but the newer stations all though looks nice that’s all it is no ease of access like for say the 18th street station. It’s hard to believe this is the same city where the subway was built cause it looks like it was installed by a thrid party company lol

      I don't think WTC would be a great southern end for the 7 train. Rather, it should continue west under the Hudson River to Secaucus, NJ, better serving Hoboken and much of northern Hudson County. That way, there is a rapid transit alternative to going through the congested Lincoln Tunnel to the Port Authority Bus Terminal.
      As far as the design, I am a bit cool with the grand design on one condition: retail space be added on the mezzanine. As I keep looking at the Second Avenue Subway stations, all I am seeing is a huge waste of money since we have what looks like a second floor of a shopping mall and no revenue coming out of it. Having some retail space like a bakery (one of the stations in Canada has something like that) could allow for the MTA to get some of the construction money back, and it can provide a new avenue for revenue. I see people selling churros on the subway from the carts. Why not make it a storefront in the subway, complete with a new credit card terminal, increasing sales?

      Possible stops would be 14th St. - Chelsea Market, 23rd Street, 34th Street with a free transfer to the 7 at Javits or connection to Penn Station, and finally 10th Ave - PATB.
      It could be a great terminus and possibly alleviate transfers along the IRT lines as its a bit of slog on 14th Union Square to get to and from the L plat. to IRT plat. especially during rush hour. I can't really see the L going past 34th tho as the line is already long as it is (not saying is as long as the A train but the going from Chelsea to Canarsie is a long ride).

    You mentioned the idea of extending the L Train north along 10th Avenue, but I would love to see the 7 Train extended south from 34th Street-Hudson Yards to 14th Street where it could meet with a new terminus for the L Train somewhere near the High Line.
    I think it would be feasible given how expensive tunnelling even short distances has become and the tail tracks of the 7 Train already end at 25th Street. New stations at 11th Avenue-28th Street and 10th Avenue-23rd Street could be built and a terminal station for both the L Train and 7th Train would provide so much better connections at the same time as offering mass transit access from Brooklyn and Queens to popular tourist destinations like Chelsea Piers, the High Line, Hudson River Park and The Meatpacking District.
    The popularity of the High Line in particular has spurred greater luxury development in the neighborhoods it traverses and that justifies investment in mass transit IMO, especially since the 7 Train extension as it is is practically tailor-made for such a project.

    • @TheRailLeaguer
      @TheRailLeaguer 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’d rather see the line go into NJ, as connections between NJ and NYC are currently inadequate.
      The Far West Side would be better served with extending the L train up 10th Avenue to 72nd Street, intersecting with the Flushing Line at 42nd/10th Avenues.

    • @Hypestrike1

      @@TheRailLeaguer On paper, I'm not an opponent of either extending the 7 Train to New Jersey or routing the L Train up 10th Avenue to 72nd Street.
      But I am also a realist and after studying the complicated decade-long struggle just to take the Second Avenue Subway a quarter of its proposed length to 96th Street (and the slow crawl to get the should-be less complicated Phase Two underway, even with existing tunnels), I just cannot envision the L Train going that far up the West Side.
      Considering the history of the Access to the Region's Core projec and it's resurrection as the Gateway Project- the former eliminated by petty politics and the latter is itself nowhere near major construction after more than a decade of development and commitments of federal funding- branching the 7 Train to Seacucus is probably doomed as a non-starter.
      The sad bottom line is politics, self-interested unions, city and state regulations, special interest groups and vocal community boards have pretty much combined to make mass transit expansion comparable to the IRT in 1904 or the Dual Contracts of 1913 all but impossible now. For that reason, I think only small extensions (which would be billed as "major projects", despite being anything but) are the only ones that nowadays have realistic chances of coming to fruition. That's why I believe extending the 7 Train to 14th Street and the L Train to meet each other at 10th Avenue is more viable, even though I'm aware no one in Albany or the MTA is giving it any serious thought.
      Still, Mystic Transit provides a good forum for sharing ideas and I think most of us will agree the MTA has its priorities completely wrong when it comes to infrastructure.

    The city should build it because it'll provide much needed service to hell's Kitchen and if port authority bus terminal were to shut down people could use this station.and highly likely from everyone I talk to Is to extend the 7 down Manhattan either to WTC or south ferry

    • @captainkeyboard1007

      Such an extension would constitute lots of station stops and operating costs would be so high that it would call for a fare increase.

    Really? I am all for that station to be built, but if you thing that station will spur development in that area, then you don't know the area. Developments continue to pop up there. I believe it is precisely the high end moneyed developments is why that station was not built.

    It should have been 9th Avenue 41st Street Port authority bus terminal. Then passengers wouldn't have to walk a long corridor to get to the bus terminal.

      The L is already aligned with Seacaucus Junction, so have the L go there.
      The 7 could also go to Jersey tho, but maybe head to Journal Square instead? With the 7 & L having an interchange in Hoboken near the river? And both lines having interchanges with the HBLR, of course.

      @@williamerazo3921 well I think the issue isn’t that a station like the 1,2,3 platform at Times Sq isn’t that it’s an island platform, but it’s size. The 2nd Ave stations are all island platforms and have very little issue with over crowding. Or what about Grand Street for the B,D? Not island platforms but probably one of the worst stations because it’s too small for the amount of people who use it. Same with the previously mentioned Times Sq platform. They are like almost a century old. Made for a very different New York with a lot less people.
