    Resin printing is what got me into Blender and 3D sculpting! Bringing something digital to life is quite special. Because you need the actual stl or obj files to print things, making kitbashes or modifications to the things you buy to print is quite easy and fun.
    No amount of protection is excessive for resin and resin fumes! Use that respirator and get some cartridges rated for Organic Airborne Vapors. (otherwise it's only good for resin dust while filing or cutting) Replace the cartridges as soon as the smell of resin leaks through. Properly ventilate any room with any amount of uncured resin, do not work on anything uncured without gloves. Your body's reaction to the chemicals involved will grow as you handle it more, so what seems fine now won't be fine later.
    I cannot stress the value of respirator cartridges and ventilation, I've had a resin printer for ~8 months, and now the smell of uncured resin makes my nose burn for a good 6 hours. Get some thick disposable gloves for the initial wash, nitrile for handling after the wash and cure and for at least a week after. If your wash is dirty, your parts will not be washed properly. Don't leave parts in the wash for more than 5 minutes at a time, do everything you can to make them dry ASAP or you get more warping. Also important is temps, do not print below 20 degrees Celsius. Most pros will either get a vat band or make a heated enclosure.
    If you are starting to print hollowed parts (75mm scale or larger, or tanks, or big bases), you will need a smaller UV light source to cure the inside of your parts, or you will need to fill in the holes after washing with glue or a technique called resin welding. You will need holes so your parts do not crack or explode over time (sometimes months, sometimes violently). If you can't fit a light inside, or you don't cap the holes, resin fumes will leak out for as long as uncured resin stays inside. You will want to place holes in a way that allows your wash to easily flow through, and manually run your cleaning solution through it multiple times, or else cleaning is not going to get it clean.
    J3DTech has a good guide for resin printing in general. Welcome to the world of 3D printing! Your desk will be covered before you know it.

    Welcome to the tribe. Pick up a small lunch tray to work on and to transfer the plate to the wash without dripping everywhere, a silicone mat for the printer and one for your work area. Small spray bottle of ISO is useful. The ISO in that wash tub will last you over a year. I print about 5kg of resin a week and don't have to recycle my large wash station for about 5 months. After you wash in ISO, have 2 tubs of warm water. One to wash any remaining ISO off and the next to soak to soften the supports. Now it is safe to remove the supports. If you remove them while the model has uncured resin on it, you will get that uncured resin everywhere (including your face and eyes) in tiny droplets. A resin-ISO mixture in your eye, even tiny droplets, is an unpleasant experience.

    Just a few things. I recommend closing the blinds when using UV cure resin (yes you're in the UK but UV light is still present despite clouds). Get a UV torch to cure anything contaminated by resin as you can throw it away afterwards but you can check your local area and see if there's any further regulations i.e. certain recycling available for resin or certain waste bins. With the water used for washing that particular resin you can use natural UV lights by sitting that container outside in the light as this will cause the resin to harden and rise to the top, you can then poor that through a funnel and reuse the water or ipa (if you end up using alcohol based washing resin) you can then expose the mushy resin to some more UV just to make sure it's cured and disposable. If you do end up getting alcohol based washable resin make sure you don't leave it in direct sunlight or UV light as it can bust into flames. Yeah the white marks are a result of not letting the area dry before curing, this is also why there should be little UV lighting in the room as it can cause the prints to have that marking over it before the wash has fully gotten rid of excess resin but there's also something with the chemical breakdown as to why it needs to be dry, speaking of chemical breakdowns, it's also best to shake the resin before tipping into the vat as this makes the resin texture smoother and gets better results, just avoid creating bubbles, also have the room temperature around I think it's 24°c as resin works better when it's at a moderate temperature. I highly recommend a blackout cover for the printer too, as well as getting more FEP's. Slicing wise I'd be curious to know what you use but from what I've seen in ZBrush there's plugins for sending models right to the printer, be interesting to see how that works?
    Sorry for the lengthy post. 😬

    So glad you showed your failures! I didn't get my resin on the printer, but yeah pouring back into the bottle is one of the most anxiety enducing experiences now for me so I always print as much as I can of the resin now. The resin trays don't really pour well unless there is only a tiny amount left.

    Yeah, getting a metal funnel with insertable mesh sieve was one of the things I got pretty soon after also having spilt some resin on my desk, so that's a good idea.
    Also, as others said, a UV flashlight comes in handy for either curing the inside of hollow prints or curing resin on paper towels and such

    Awesome Mac! Always love seeing other 3d artists venture into 3d printing.
    Out of curiosity, are you aware of what garage kits are? They’re essentially model kits made by hobbyists at home and sold in small quantities for other hobbyists to paint. In recent years, many garage kit modelers have been making the switch to 3d printers for creating prototypes and either sell them as 3d printed kit parts or further refine them to remove 3d printer imperfections (such as layer lines) and then create silicone molds to duplicate them. This is a very common method that Japanese garage kit modelers use and the community is very active on Twitter and TH-cam, most Japanese garage kits are typically anime or of cute girls in general.
    Sorry if this explanation was a little messy but regardless I think if the idea of selling 3d prints interests you that it would be cool to check out online garage kits communities! There used to be a subreddit with more information on this but was sadly deleted some time ago. Looking forward to the next video!

    I haven't watched past the moment you show the water washable resin bottle, just a word of advice : do not wash your prints in the sink, this kind of resin is as toxic as the others, it's just that water can clean your prints, but you still have to keep the tainted water in jars and dispose of it just like any other toxic substance, if you have disposal centers in your neighbourhood.
    And I'd highly suggest to use regular resins instead, because water washable has cracking problems over time.
    Last piece of advice, if you print hollow, don't use any infill as it'll trap resin inside your prints and it's gonna crack and leak over time.
    Now back to the video.

    • @Hutorch
      @Hutorch 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This about the infill. I don't know why, but Lychee slicer does infill on 2D hollowing per default, but it makes it a challenge to drain all resin out and isn't even needed

    I'm already into FDM printing for a while now, but now I want to take things to another level with a resin printer. Watching your video made me laugh, imagining myself in your place. I think that my first experiences handling the resin, despite watching a lot of content on line, will be pretty much the same.
    One tip regarding the funil is to use a metal funil with a built in strainer That way you can avoid the need of the paper filter.
    Looking forward to follow your nexts steps on that. Thanks for the great content.

    I do gel manicures so I work with a lot of uv resin in a salon. I have to say I don’t know much about cleansing different types of resins but I use 90% isopropyl alcohol and cotton to cleanse mine. I imagine that would be a lot easier for smaller prints than the cleansing station, but I don’t know for sure. You might want to check it out.

    I was thinking about getting one. But I figured that since I've started doing clay sculpture, I don't need to print figurines that I can make myself. And then I decided that I'm a much better digital sculptor than clay sculptor, so now I think I will buy a 3D printer. Eventually.

    Out of pure love for the channel. The pacing and storytelling of this video was not great. "If you are wondering why the music changed. You're about to find out." With two sentences you've killed all the suspense of this moment and it was probably one of the only interesting moments of the video.
    One reason I clicked on the video was because I wanted to see you attempt to slice and print your own model to only be left with a "to be continued".
    I think this content could be very exciting and interesting. I encourage experimentation and change within the channel. I'm excited to see what the future holds for the 3D printing videos.

    • @DannyMac3d
      @DannyMac3d  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Brutal, but appreciated. Was it really the only part you found interesting? 😟 taken the words on board. I did intend to include the character in this video but I also desperately wanted to stick to my self imposed deadline of posting today and just ran out of time. It'll be in the next!

    • @jjninja2
      @jjninja2 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @DannyMac3d Hey man if your deadline is self imposed. Take the time to make something great. Theres millions of youtube videos. Viewers have enough content to watch until they die. Theyre not waiting on you to upload. If you feel this urge to "stay relevant" making a couple lack luster videos won't achieve that.
      Obviously, everything I say is opinion, and you ultimately have to decide what is worth taking and what is not.
      This video as of right now is a glorified unboxing video. The premise and pitch at the beginning of the video is "To spice up the channel I bought a 3d printer". What are your plans with the 3D printer? How will this affect your 3D characters? Why should us as a viewer care about you owning a 3d printer?
      If the pitch of the video is "I bought a 3d printer heres the beginning of this journey." Take us further back. Was this the only printer you were thinking about buying? Did you look into PLA vs Resin? I ran into these problems as a beginner this is how I learned from it (which is what you did with the discoloration)
      Understand why youre making a video. Understand why we should care about the video. Little cheat code: film the video then film the intro so you can form your pitch around the story you know is going to happen.
      I believe in you. Experimentation sometimes goes bad but we iterate and we improve. Cant wait to see the follow up video.❤
      Sidenote: Dont delete videos it screws up the algorithm of your channel.
