    I can't believe you have received comments about your nails looking dirty. They look very well manicured, oiled and moisturised. And how rude to make such remarks🙄

    • @TheSalonLife
      @TheSalonLife  ปีที่แล้ว +41

      Many, many. I simple delete these comments because who needs this kind of negativity.
      Then I had this person ask me kindly that my nails look a little dirty and they are probably not and she was curious why, so I decided to make this video... and I'm honestly starting to feel a little self conscious about my nails 😝

      @The Salon Life oh no Anna please don't. I just think people don't understand/ know how nails that handle creams and oil on a regular basis look like. When I was oiling my nails all the time they got a little like how yours look. I think your nails look beautiful and very well looked after. I have seen many nail techs whose hands look very messy. You shouldn't feel self conscious about them.
      Big hugs and you do an amazing job BTW.

    Well, if people think your nails are dirty then that reinforces the fact that these videos are needed, you're doing good work.
    I have an old child's toothbrush for cleaning under my nails, I've always felt the ones that are sold as actual nail brushes were way too harsh.

    I have an extended hyponychium on every finger except for my thumbs from what I assume to be aggressive biting during my younger adult years. It's nice to see a video addressing it (took forever to even figure out what to call it) because it can be frustrating and painful to deal with, especially if you're like me and you like to keep your nails short. Definitely learned a few things from this video. :) Thanks Anna! I recommend your channel to all my friends who ask about nail care.

    I was just wondering about cleaning my nails! I’ve been following your advice with AMAZING results, and I’m experiencing the elongation of the nail beds that you talk about. I’ve always been a pretty aggressive nail cleaner, but it suddenly occurred to me that maybe that could be contributing to my short nail beds. No more scraping!
    Also, I have a MIRACLE to report: I was moving some furniture this weekend and chipped a nail. But that was all that happened! A tiny little chip came off and then I filed it smooth. This is a miracle, because prior to this, any damage to the free edge of my nails would result in losing the entire free edge. It would fold, break, snap off or tear off, and leave shredded bits that I would pick off all the way to the hyponichium or beyond. But this time, just a tiny chip came off and the rest of the free edge remained perfectly intact. I credit the warm oil soaks and using oil with almost every hand wash.

    I have been removing this from under my nails since for ever , i feel weird when i dont. I have also been a nail bitter all my teenage years so 8 have receiding nail bed on my thumbs and index, i have been reshaping things by slowly removing less agressively where its receides. I still have a skin picking disorder where i cant stop myself from picking at any imperfections i see or feel, so unless i wear opaque gel i can stop over cleaning the underneet. At least nowhadays i do it cleanly with proper tools and not my teeths.

    Your nails are so nice looking. I’ve been following your videos for a year now. I have learned a lot from you. I have always liked natural nails. The type that still needs a lot of care and attention, but natural. My nails have looked better than I ever imagined they could… HOWEVER… I have relapsed. I’m picking at the skin around my nails. Biting my nails and skin. I have one good nail on one hand and three on the other. They hurt and I hide them again. I think my mindset gets the best of me sometimes and my nails get abused. I consistently dig under my nails to get rid of any semblance of “dirt” and now I’m thinking this might be why I get the white spots in my nails wherever they’re exposed to water for a long time. The spots turn into peels and the nail breaks eventually. Maybe if I stop doing that they will be sealed off and more protected? It’s either the peels or tape gloves on wherever I wash my hair right now ugh 😢

    • @TheSalonLife
      @TheSalonLife  ปีที่แล้ว

      Are the white spots on top of the nail plate?

    • @TheSalonLife
      @TheSalonLife  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think using gloves and taping them to wash hair is not necessary. I never do that. Maybe if the nails are super damaged? It's important to treat the nails gently when they are wet and about an hour later.
      To improve the condition of the nails I suggest warm oil soaks

    I have a different problem because that dark line IS dirt! I can scrape it out with my nails, an orangewood stick or if I spend a good few minutes with a nail brush.
    My problem is it returns within an hour, even if I'm not working with my hands, just watching TV or something 😢
    It's a grey oily dirt. I think because I fidget so much I just end up playing with random objects, scratching itchy skin (eczema) or playing with my hair?
    I never get nail infections or anything but it feels unhygienic to be walking around with dirty hands, and of course it looks nasty. My nails are thin so probably why it's so noticable too.
    I tried having them very clean and dry, then putting base coat or polish underneath, but it just disintegrates within a day.
    I don't want to try gel because of the cost and risk of allergy... I want to be a cute natural nail girlie but it's just not in the cards, I think the no-free-edge life is choosing me 😂

    • @TheSalonLife

      A lot of detergents are aggressive with removing oils so I think over time it would strip away the protection of your nails and make them more porous to water.
      I find dehydrating my nails with rubbing alcohol, on top and underneath takes the transparency away after a shower or cleaning. Follow up with a good nail oil so they stay flexible 😊

    A gentle toothbrush! That's a great idea. I am always afraid that the nail scrubbing brush I use is too strong. I also get dirt collecting along the sides of my nails, which is impossible to get out from the sides if not using a sharp tool (which I don't do). I've come to realize I need to use a more gentle tool when cleaning underneath my nails, especially by the corners of the nail, as I am still early on in the process of growing out my thin, peeling nails and the corners especially are very fragile and prone to breaking. When I use a bamboo stick or other hard tool to clean underneath there, it sort of acts like a lever and applies a lot of force to this tiny corner of keratin, so a soft brush I think would be much gentler.

      Hi Jann, the darker part is the part that is still connected to the skin, visible through the nail so there is no way to paint it underneath. It's above (towards the cuticle) the hyponychium seal

    Could you possibly tell about kids nails care? What is safe to use and do?

    • @TheSalonLife
      @TheSalonLife  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Generally I don't recommend anything special for the kinds because usually they don't have dry skin and now this is my personal stance on the issue but I would let kids be kids without worrying to much about appearance and "image".
      Any enhancement products can be allergenic over time so I would not recommend it, same with polish really. Polishes do not really stick well to kids nails because kids nails are very flexible usually and moist.
      If someone wants to polish their kids nails once in a blue moon any polish is OK, you don't need anything special. I mean obviously don't let them eat it or drink it.

      Thank you for answering :-)
      I was asking just because my 5 yo daughter constantly has overgrown "cuticle", that also tends to peeling. Sometimes it even causes an infection. So, just wondering if it's ok to use some urea cream and wooden stick for kids.

    • @TheSalonLife
      @TheSalonLife  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Anna, OK, I know what you are talking about. It's not overgrown cuticle but living skin, so the skin fold around the nail gets stuck to the nail and as the nail grows it lets go and it tears sometimes. This can also happen when kids keep their fingers in their mouths because saliva has some enzymes that break down or irritate the skin.
      I would suggest lanolin based cream, like a nipple cream or Bephanten. I wouldn't be using any tools really. See if applying the cream helps and keep the fingers away from the mouth :)

      @annash3326 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheSalonLife Thank you! I, actually, haven't even thought about lanolin. Good idea. She never puts her fingers into her mouth, but keeps picking the peeling skin. Hope that a cream will help :)

      I had awful dry itchy hands as a kid, and it was undiagnosed eczema. Maybe look to a dermatologist if your little one is still having problems ❤

    When I was getting acrylic and gel nails I had one single nail that had a very thin line that would stretch out from underneath the nail...I wonder if that's what it was?

    • @TheSalonLife

      Probably hyponychium?

    • @bbymks5
      @bbymks5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @The Salon Life I think, maybe a slightly over grown one? I haven't had it happen since I stopped getting acrylic and gel nails and I can't remember which nail it was since there's zero sign of it happening. So strange...I actually forgot about it until this video.

      Small world, I actually know Adrian Arkada from the classes I was teaching in Poland years and years ago. He is hilarious, in a very good way. That was before he came up with his system. I don't know about the products he sells, never used them.
      What exactly do you need help with?

      Look for synthetically derived urea, it's becoming much more common in skincare products and is chemically identical to natural urea :)

    • @MildExplosion
      @MildExplosion 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TheSalonLife Urea when naturally derived is harvested from animals, usually horses, who are kept in factory farm conditions - but cosmetics are sometimes using lab-created urea these days, the problem is it's not usually labelled.

      @TheSalonLife  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @mildexplosion No, the urea found in cosmetics and personal care products is synthetic and not animal derived

      “Urea is a major component of the urine of mammals. So it's not surprising that some people wonder if the urea in cosmetic comes from urine. In commercial cosmetics, urea is made synthetically in a lab. Synthetic urea is also commonly added to baked goods and wines to help with fermentation.”
