People watch movies and think they know the full story, but the greatest story lies behind the picture. That’s always the case for ponysmasher’s productions, and I love them!!!
Thanks for making these! Shorts are such an underrated medium. It opens you to a whole new audience, and serves as a valuable learning tool for the director to experiment. Maybe these will convince other directors to use it more :)
I've been a fan since the Lights Out short was released and it essentially introduced me to the world of TH-cam horror shorts and I just have to say: you've easily become one of my favorite TH-camrs/directors. The fact that you still come on here and do shorts, give advice to aspiring directors, all while being "in the business" now... a lot of respect for you, Mr. Sandberg.
I know, right! I didn't think horror shorts could work so well until I discovered David's and tried to make my own after seeing that it can actually be quite entertaining :)

Dude!...You and Lotta HAVE to start a Podcast! It would be so interesting to see you two dive deep into your process and ideas of your short films, features and other films in general. 🔥💯
I really hate how directors have to explain their reasons for doing things in their film because the casual viewer doesn’t think it’s a good idea or they would have done it better. Then go direct a movie yourself and do your own thing. I think the voiceover was a lovely touch. I really felt like I was immersed in the character’s torture. I know what it’s like to feel like someone (or something) is watching me and I related so much to this film thanks to the voiceover. Great job David and Lotta! My favorite people in the world.
The voiceover on the short was a good call, not only did it make it stand out against most of the other dialogue-less shorts on your channel but it definitely did add an extra dimension to Lotta's haunted house character that we've been missing in the past, plus, you have every right to experiment, even if it's not good, it's your channel! Perfect place to try out new things
I fucking loved the voice over in this short horror movie. It added so much and made me feel like i was seeying things though her whoch made it much creepier.
Yeah, it's more about the angle, lighting, framing, camera movement, etc. I've seen great films shot on 16mm, and crap films in 4k. Resolution means almost nothing.
Your shorts are always so beautifully made ♡ Some of them are just so terrifying yet I can’t seem to look away 😬 Also yasss I love the dr who reference!!! That episode by Peter Capaldi was one of my favs!
I became a huge fan of this guy. Love the way he shares behind the scenes of every movie. It's unbelievable he could pull of this short film all by himself. Most importantly he is passionated and down to earth. Way to Go man. Waiting for your next short films and those BiG hollywood films.
I love the fact that he is now an amazing Hollywood director but still humble not forgetting where he came from, I loved his work on lights out and Shazam was one of my favourite movies last year
Everytime I'm really unmotivated to film something because I can not figure out what my film should be about I just need to have a look on your films. Love the simple approach you take and the final result even more! Lotta is also doing really well as an actress. Hope I can enjoy watching her in upcoming cinema movies again. David you might be the first example for a YT Filmmaker who proves that this generation has chances in Hollywood. Must be a great feeling, you deserve it!
David is one of the top ranked directors in Hollywood , but still he's down to earth , enjoying his days shooting films in his own space , with whatever equipment he's got , even though he's worked with the top notch crew !! It's so amazing !!!!
1. I love Lotta so much. Drool and all. You are a lucky man. 2. What I liked about the voice over in this short was the resolution, the fact that you had heard her "from the beyond". It was a nice twist.
I always enjoy behind the scenes stuff like this, regardless of what it's for. To me, it's just always infinitely interesting to pull back behind the camera and see the, well, making of something you enjoy.
About voice over: I think that most of all it adds personal identification and intimacy with the protagonist. Yes, some images speak for themselves in terms of understanding what's happening: Yes she closed the doors and now they are open, but the point of view of the spectator is more objective, separated from the protagonist. Voice over changed that, accelerated, boosted the process of identification at the range of seconds or less. More over, the title is supposed to have two meanings: "Not alone in here" where "here" is the house and (spoiler alert) her own body at the end. With the voice over I think it adds one more meaning: she is not alone because we are listening to her thoughts, also! Loved the short. Huge love and kisses from Argentina.
I love your behind the scenes films. Not just a great, practical tech break down, but inspiration and amazing perspective on creating and some of the hang ups we all face.
David - you are one of our favorite directors working today. Your films are quality, the behind the scenes stuff like this is priceless and inspirational. We’ve been following you since the initial Lights Out short. You are a gift to upstarts like us.
David, you and Lotta are the dream team! As much as I love your movies on the big screen, I love your YT channel even more. Each video is a MasterClass in filmmaking. Thank you for keeping on making TH-cam movies and BTS for us to enjoy and learn from. 🧡🧡🧡
The fact you still come back to youtube to make short films AND share your experience really shows how much you love your craft. All I can say is thank you! You answered all the questions I had about the short. Also, I particularly loved the camera work in this one! With every pan, I could hardly bear to look at the screen because I was expecting something to be there. I have to say one of my favorite shots is the one of Lotta in the bathroom checking the shower as it racks to her face. Lighting was great, you really did a nice job exposing the BMPCC4k. Nice work!
This channel is really something. It's my first time coming back after watching the OG Lights Out years ago. It's well-made, scary, funny, insightful, inspiring, and everything else. Great work. I can see why you found such success in Hollywood.
You are an inspiration sir. Not just your talent, but the fact that your supportive wife is right there with ya. I've seen your hollywood films, and while they're pretty great, it's your short I keep coming back to for inspiration. I hope you never stop making them!
Can't express how amazing, inspiring, and educational this channel is. Thank you David for genuinely still looking out for the little guy even when you're literally the director of three major Hollywood pictures.
This was simply incredible. So many videos that I have watched on YT, and have felt like I wasted time I won't get back. This is the first time I truly didn't want the video to end, and that i walked away with a treasure chest of wisdom. Outstanding.
I say this on basically every video but these are amazing. No other tutorial video gives as much insight into the process as your making of videos do. You're incredibly generous with your time and your skills.
Every singe bit of this is pure inspiration! The attention to detail and the little tips, tricks and hacks show your passion for film making!! I'm so glad that you placed a foot in Hollywood as you deserve it way more than others do! AND I love the fact, that you are using Blender as this is also my main 3D tool of choice!
I always love these videos because it shows that filmmaking can still be very effective without complex equipment or deeper story lines... the simpler the better in my book!
I just did a similar approach to what you describe with a short film. We called it the video storyboard or the scratch tape. Had friends who won't be the final actors play the characters, they even had scripts in hand. We have a cut of that and now myself and the writer have collaborated on what's strong and what's weak. We then got to be uber prepared and were able to focus almost entirely on performance on the day of the actual shoot. I heard of the process from an interview with a music video director, can't remember the name of the director, but after actually doing it in practice it made the whole production run smoother, the actors had confidence in my notes and they also saw the Video Storyboard and loved understanding how they fit into the construction of the piece, and shooting the rough version with a few friends in a low stakes way was a blast!
I actually really liked the voiceover in the short. I usually don’t like voiceovers but I feel like the one in yalls short plays off of our own fears when we’re home alone. It’s kinda comedic and relatable but also fairly suspenseful
I love the thought that goes into these shorts. I have a question though, does the DGA care if you still shoot independent shorts for TH-cam? Are there rules about that stuff? Love your channel.
Why would there be? Shooting a Hollywood film is just another contract for a project. You can do whatever you want in your own time. We do live in a democracy
@The Filmmaking Channel Well with rules like "don't you dare even literally touch the camera", it's hard to be sure what else might be asinine as well. And contracts have various conditions, I knew a musician who was basically forced to quit YT and delete all his uploaded work because the contract demanded him to do the music ONLY with the publisher. And I'm not even starting on the "everything you do while you're employed is our property, yes even if you did it on your own, in the free time after work, for your own pet project" bullshit that's also pretty common. And while all you can do is either accept the terms or turn around and leave, democracy it isn't.
The voice over is my favorite part for sure, so many horror short films keep it quiet and spooky but the commentary on this was relatable and made the video feel more unique 👌👌
So glad RLM recommend this channel. It's super interesting to see how different little decisions can change a movie so much, such as having voice narration.
I just made my first micro-short horror film (we wrapped this evening), and BOY do I wish I had watched this film (and subsequent "making of" video) beforehand. I just learned SO MUCH! Thank you for making such amazing (and educational) content!
I hate horror. I love hearing passionate people, so I love this channel. But hell, the monster face on this is so freaky I got spooked just from watching how you made it. Seriously keep up the great work. It's so amazing to see someone so passionate about their craft and the work you're doing even while in the current situation.
And can I just say that one of my absolute favorite ‘easy and cheap’ effects you did is when you cut out small pieces of reflective tape and just placed them over Lotta’s eyelids for the Lights Out creature and had a soft light behind the camera.
Needless to say that I just love the Shorts as well as the "making of" I have to tell that the drooling was specially effective, because that give the glimpse of how "hungry of her" the creature was. It was terrifyingly scary
Honestly, when you put all of the demon faces next to each other I thought the one from lights out was the most terrifying. I think it's just the wide shape of the mouth is really unsettling.
This is what filmmaking is all about. Figuring things out and being creatively ambitious. I completely relate and agree with what is mentioned in the very end of the video. SIMPLICITY can do wonders for you.
Thanks for this! I love your videos because you not only teach about filmmaking but you also give me so much motivation to go out and do something creative.
Just saw the film and I loved it. I agree with the voiceover! I think it really adds to the tension and pace of the story, hearing Lotta's voice helped me empathise with the character more. I loved the china ball set up, I might try it with my Aputure F7!
I have been a fan of yours since your lights out short. I'm so glad you still take the time out to post on your TH-cam Channel ❤ lots of love from 🇨🇦🇨🇦
4:10 Shotblocking! At least that’s what our team has come to call it. Glad to hear it is something others think about. It has saved huge amounts of money through shooting the whole production as simple as possible and making mistakes early before getting all the cast and crew on set. It’s just hard for others to see why the “wasted time” of shooting a movie twice is really not wasted at all. Thanks for sharing such great behind the scenes!
Lumet's book is fantastic - and so are your "making of" videos! Useful info from a professional filmmaker who also happens to be a regular guy. Much appreciated!
Simple is always the best way to do things. Often times when you keep going and adding more and more, it waters it down, and the original concept is lost. This was a great short David, I enjoyed this and Shadowed very much!
A voice-over can be its own art or character development. In a longer movie, they could serve to emphasize or reinforce the personality of the character. Dune comes to mind, "My name is a killing word." You could use that internal line to express dismay or wonderment or glee, while showing a different expression on the actor's face.
Keep it simple, and the David Mamet recommend are worth the thumbs up alone. Two great suggestions. But you do a wonderful job of walking us through how you made this short. Thanks for sharing your tips and tricks. Great stuff. I'm a subscriber now.
Ikea has a synthetic version of their paper lantern light in their outdoor section. I picked one up late last year, and it works great as a paper lantern substitute since my last one ripped after a few uses. Keep up the good work DFS!
Btw I REALLY liked the use of voiceover in the short. You pulled it off well. I think voiceover can be bad but only if used instead of showing. It was done well here. Reminds me of The Pursuit of Happyness where the voiceover was done well in my opinion.
It was honestly pretty necessary for parts of this video to work (mostly the ending), and really would have been jarring had it just shown up in those. It also, at least for me, gave a sense of hopefulness that his other videos just don't have. Even though Lotta's characters aren't explicitly shown dying at the end of Cam Closer or Lights Out, that's a pretty obvious implication. Here, she's narrating, so it seems like she might still be alive...which she is. Technically.
David has to be one of the most down to earth directors ever
Oh yes, love it 💚

I found you through Film Riot and man I'm glad to be here.
I'm not a big horror guy, but I love seeing these behind the scenes featurettes!
Id LOVE To see a Full Making Of A Short FIlm. Script, Filming, Etc. Great Video David!
The jump scare of refreshing my subs and this thumbnail was at eye level
Brilliant short, thanks for the look behind the scenes! Lotta reminds me of a young Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia in this one.
This is awesome! I’m appreciative of filmmakers like yourself that still interact with fans/audiences. I think its a great way to inspire people.
I loved the voiceover in this, added to the story.
Lotta seems like a cool monster.
All the work and detail. I love your work so much and love the fact you make a behind the scenes as well.
