Cousin Carl LaPietra introduced me to your TH-cam channel. I am loving your adventures in Pico. I have our family home in Santa Maria, which has been in our family for more than 250 years. Will continue to follow your posts.Best regards. Fernando
Thank you for your kind words Fernando; means a lot. Santa Maria is on my bucket list; my cousin's wife is from the island; I believe Anjos. Her maiden name is Machado. I would buy property there in a minute. Glad you are with us on our journey. Saude!
The bottom might have been used at a root cellar/ cold store or animal shelter and the top for hay storage. The beans seem to be in a good condition so you probably can walk on it. Look for sawdust under the beams, it would be a sign of wood beetles and woodworm. The suggestion to use lime on the walls is very good.
Your videos are so inspiring I’m sure that lots of people will make a decision to change their life and move in such a beautiful place, you two are 🔝🔝🔝 in making these videos take care
mom used to talk about old drafty homes where the wind would whistle when it blew. You have one of those homes. its unmolested. My God, Im so happy for you. You can do so much with that home. it has so much character.
This lava stone house and you have just caught me...from now on I'll follow you (from Salvador) to the end of this project. Much better than Netflix series lol.
I certainly appreciate it (the adega) and absolutely LOVE IT! Reminds me of the good old days when I spent my summers in Pico when we had no electricity, no bathrooms (out houses only) and no running water, only our man made water tanks attached to the house (just like yours). We had to boil our water! It made me appreciate what we had here in the states and I soooo appreciate that my parents took us to spend our vacations in Pico... the best gift they ever gave us! O Pico está sempre no meu coração.
I remember those days as well Joanna; glad I got to experience all of it. I remember as if it was yesterday; adegas, sunsets, festas, o mar, etc. Take care! Saude!
Love the cottage.. been looking at ways to renovating to insure the damp and humidity to keep to a minimal and someone gave me a wonderful hint. Use lime instead of normal cement on the stone walls . Walls can breath and a super insulation and lime has a wonderful feature if cracks appear on the wall due to movement it grows and seals the cracks and not like cement that makes it worse. Enough you tube videos on the subject also very cost saving when insulating a stone house. Just thought I would share with you this.
Hey boss love the videos . Back now almost 10 years my parents moved back home São Miguel island at the age of 45 and retired! my youngest brother was 9 at the time went to school and wasn’t going great he was bullied and called names ... it was tuff ! My parents own land a bar and about 5 houses some of which were 3000 sq feet . They have now sold half ! We lived there for almost 5 years , I myself loved it there , I met my now wife brought her over to Canada and we now have 6 kids . Lol I sure am jealous now that I see your wonderful videos Keep the great info coming ... if my penny stock trading picks up I’d consider moving there . Our islands are beautiful aren’t they . Bye for now
That is awesome; thanks for sharing. You and us have the best of both worlds; Canada and Azores. These islands are beautiful; no doubt about that. Good luck with the stocks; I have a few that hopefully will pay off. Take care! Saude!
I love this old benches and the table looks in great condition. The metal bed frame is awesome! Hope you find more treasures!! I can see the potential of the place. The tough stones are beautiful and the wooden beams rustic.
You two are hilarious!! Even Bernie made it to Pico 😅 Thank you for the tour....incredible lava house!! It is going to be an amazing little place to stay!! Keep your vision...it is going to be incredible! Imagine all the history and stories behind the building of that house, and the daily life lived within its walls...that is why I love old places like this...the stories, the history...thanks again for taking us along on your journey...man the saudades are overwhelming!!
Laura surprised me with Bernie; freaked out when I first saw him .lol. We really appreciate hearing from you; glad you are on the journey with us! Take care!
Wouldn't it be fun to go back in time for one day and see this when it was being used! What do you do with garbage on the island? Do they haul it off the island?
Absolutely Ricardo; maybe there is a movie in it! lol. I was thinking of asking the previous owner if they had photos from back in the day. It would be cool to see! Take care! Saude!
Hi guys, Laura get work on the editing you had me laughing which is a good thing, Carlos glad to see you did not go through the floor. Wow love your view its gorgeous. Cant wait to see it all done who knows we may visit Pico island someday and rent from you. Have a good night and be safe!

Great lava stone house Carlos and Laura. Many of those lava houses didn't withstand so well the quake from 98 but that one is in tip top condition. Really looking forward to see how you will deal with it.
He he, you will never come home to Canada..... it seems to you have some great plans and work to do. It will be great and I wish it was me stuck on Pico. Enjoy your your stay even if it’s not what you expected. Great video 👏
Kinda of moving around vids on youtube, but, I'm not seeing any Drywall in homes. you know, Lime hydrate sheets to remodel with. what do they make the plaster finishing with? how do they seal in the rock walls? I'm seeing black mold in some basements and wondering if they spray bacteracide or something before they seal the stone. There seems to be quite a few land and "rubble" homes that look repairable with some sort of Cement/Plaster work. I'm pretty handy with that type of work. Maybe a video showing how they "renew" these old structures. It's like I'm seeing a career of stone wall finishing just in itself on the islands. Maybe not necessary? Nobody cares to finish homes like that? what's up with that?
Hi Timothy! Drywall is used is some homes, especially in dividing walls or drop ceiling. Humidity is a problem, renovated or new builds are better protected from the elements. Not a bad idea for a video, we might do one in the future. Take care!
Hey guys I can't wait to touch that lava wall I've never been up close to lava before what a unique building that is so much you can do with that so happy for you guys!
Older Houses/homes on the Islands have a musty moldy smell ( due to high winter humidity ) that ranges from mild to severe. Have you encountered that issue, if so what is your solution to fix problem and prevent it ?
That is true; we did not have that problem with this house. We will upgrade the insulation for the house to protect it even more. The key is to really insulate the house with high quality materials; this is vital. I think a salamander(fireplace) will help a lot, extra heater and a dehumidifier. We are still in the middle of learning more about this; stay tuned. Take care Roger!
I was stationed in the Azores on Terciera when I was in the Navy. We loved it! We did visit Pico & Faial. We were there 1986-1988.
That is Amazing David! Glad you joined our journey! Cheers!
Beautiful video. The wood ceiling and the wall rock colors are stunning. Lots of potential. Treasure.
Glad you liked the video Maria! There is a lot of potential in this treasure! Take care!
