  • Part 1: A Northern Hyperadobe off-grid Tiny house built to take on all four seasons! Our leading inspiration for building with earth stemmed from the desire to expand beyond the conventional and discover what really is possible if only we take the TIME.
This particular version of an earth bag/rammed earth construction was mixed with the surrounding sandy soil along with clay in another area of the property and then stabilized with Portland cement. The walls are about 6’5” high x 13” thick making the wall a great thermal mass.
3-1/2” x 6-3/4” rough sawn timber’s have been placed as rafters for our flat roof/greenhouse floor (getting ahead of ourselves so shhh…)
This is a Cheap Build and most of the building materials are harvested as close to the land as you can get (wood is from a local sawmill, the soil from the land, and the cedar tree center post from a local friends back yard), Making this a very eco friendly build as well!
If you liked this and would like more content such as; In depth DIY Videos, Out of the box builds, and or more about our way of life.. leave us a comment with what sort of ideas you think we should pursue next!

What is the adobe mixing ratio? You’re using netted bag, will it not bulges in due course? Are you giving any time intervals between the layer or rows? Please explain? How you are maintaining the center to have correct circle?

The mixing ratio evolved as we switched from a top soil with 30%+ clay 70%- with organic debris to straight sand/clay mixture half way through. Our walls went from more rubbery/living to more sandstone like after the switch. We found the best ratio was approximately 30% climates ay 70% sand with just enough Portland cement to bond the elements when set.
So for example 7 shovels sand 3 shovels clay 1/2-1 shovel Portland. It really doesn’t take much to add strength and bond the Adobe. The less Portland you use the better your thermal mass as you will be reducing the crystal formation in your Adobe building material.
The mesh netting is flexible and if I didn’t add water or use a little Portland there’s a chance it may silt out over time. When building we noticed that if you add to much water it definitely bulges on you and will leak out of the mesh. But over time it dries. To maintain form we used a laser level on the base layer and regular 4ft level to check plumb and level as we went along. As for maintaining a perfect circle, We Didn’t make one! Yes sounds sloppy but what we wanted to do was attempt to build by sight without much of a plan, to see just how simple it is to build with and to “design as you go”. We found that as long as we came back along the sides tamping with 2x4 blocks the walls stay relatively uniform and do not bulge especially after full drying is reached.
The most layers for us in a day was 2. I’m pretty certain you could keep layering with minimal dry time in between (say 1hr), as long as you don’t over wet!
Hope this answers your questions, maybe we will put another video out discussing our building methodology it’s unique that’s for sure!

@@CampcorderOffGrid I didn't see that one. I'm a little sour being here in Maine and not being able to find Morels this year. I watch Morel Videos after the season for them ends and im not taunted by your glorious finds 😁😉 The woods provide all but that one for me but occasionally. Great job. Foraging is life. 👏👏👏

Great question, I’m assuming you mean the plywood with nails sticking through that we set in place on the sandbags? They are needed to help grip the sandbags and the first row of the Hyperadobe to keep it from shifting around much during the tamping process. You’ll notice in Superadobe Builds (sand bags stacked on each other) they will run courses of barbed wire to keep the bags in place after each row. Also I’ll definitely give those verses a read thank you and God Bless!
