  • We've fed Orioles for a number of years now, and I've done a few videos about them. Recently I found some time to make some decorative feeders for orioles. I liked the way they turned out, so I thought I would show how to make a decorative Oriole feeder, step by step. It was pretty easy to do, and making several extras didn't take that long at all. As you will see in the video, the possibilities are almost limitless. Let me know if you feed Orioles where you are. And for those of you who might be wondering, we feed ours plain grape jelly.

    Great tip about putting Diatomaceous Earth around the base of the feeder. I'm going to try that around the base of my hummingbird feeders too! I love your decorative oriole feeders! Happy Father's day Jim, I hope you have a wonderful day.

      Lol, now that made me laugh :) I don't know about where you are, but here, we don't see very many in the summer. We see them mostly when they migrate through in the spring and in late summer to fall. When they get here in the spring, we just don't have enough flowers to hold them here I guess.

    Love it and can’t wait for thrift stores to reopen. Any brilliant ideas on how to keep squirrels from licking clean the jelly feeders? One more side: it bugs me to see 3 dislikes - youtube should REQUIRE a comment on any “dislike” because how would anyone know if something needs fixing or might want something added OR plain jealous they didn’t think of it first - GREAT JOB and THANKS

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you very much for the kind and supportive words! I really do appreciate that! We only had trouble with the squirrels once, and that was when we put the feeder really close to the fence. As long as it is away from the fence, they don't bother them. I think it might help that we have a guard cat :)

      Hello. There are several species of birds over here that eat grape jelly. The Orioles in this video especially love it. I'm not sure of what birds in England would eat jelly, if any. It might take a little research. Thanks for watching!

    Great video! How do you keep the feeder from filling up with water during a storm? I put one out in the garden and filled with rain water when it stormed

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Adam. Yes, with this type of feeder, you either have to remove it when you suspect a storm, or it will fill with water. That is why with these, I never put very much jelly in them.

  • @BbjmL1

    Great idea. What do you put in the cup for feed? No clue what they eat besides robbing my hummingbird feeder.

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      We use grape jelly....the store brand because it's cheaper. Yes, they go to our hummingbird feeder sometimes too.

  • @lindabaker1776
    @lindabaker1776 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Can u give Orioles strawberry or orange jelly or jam besides grape? Do you just sit it in a cup for them to get at? This is very interesting and such a great idea. I couldn't see the video very good because there are arrows and lines in the way so I couldn't read the words of what materials was needed and how to put the standing orial feeder together. But I kinda got the idea

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've tried a couple of types, but the only one that they really go for is the grape jelly around here.

    This is cool Jim, a real neat looking bird. Would this work in the winter too? Just out of curiosity why is this not a "Nature's Cool" post?

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It might work in the winter, but would require regular cleaning I would think. Typically it would be a Nature's Cool post, but it's takes so long for a video to get started over there, if ever :)

    What keeps the grape jelly feeder from being over run with yellow jackets, wasps and hornets that also like sweet liquids?

      We have some wasps that show up in mid summer, but not in huge numbers.
