Navy SEAL to Actor -Chris Alvarez on BUDs and His Time in the SEALS

  • Chris Alvarez always had a desire to serve with the best of the best. Originally wanting to join the United States Marine Corps, a teacher and mentor guided him to research the United States Navy SEALs. What he discovered lit a flame and in 2009 he joined the U.S. Navy beginning his journey to join the SEAL brotherhood.
That journey would eventually lead Alvarez to the Navy’s Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL Training course, better known as BUD/S. Designed to test stamina, leadership, and teamwork, BUD/S is considered to be one of the most difficult training courses in the United States military. Alvarez would complete BUD/S, Serve on two deployments with the SEALs, and then return to Coronado as a SEAL Instructor.
After being medically discharged from the Navy in 2020 Chris Alvarez decided to pursue his passion for the arts and became an actor. Most recently he starred opposite Chris Pratt in Amazon Prime Series “The Terminal List” (2022).

I once read about Navy SEAL and he said something that stuck with me. He said he was trying to reach the end goal, and just couldn't, he failed out. When he tried again, he decided to change his strategy and picked out the best of the guys trying out; then he decided he was going to do better than that guy. He made the SEALS after that! I bet the focus and competitiveness really saved the day under those conditions! Also, respect brother, HOOAH!

Saw another interview where the Seal recalled his BUDS strategy: If he could make it to breakfast, he would be okay. If he could make it to lunch, he would be okay. If he made it to dinner, he would be okay.
He followed his mindset and focused on surviving chunks of time to get to the end.

criminals. Robbery, Murder, Rape you name it...and you can find a seal that has done it. And of course, there are the guys that do it right...as best they can. And that is the way it should be

There’s plenty of discomfort to go around as grunt or other combat arms in Army or Marines. Being a sailor in the Navy can be a hard job. Nobody wants to be cold and wet all the time. Very few can handle rigors of being cold, wet, doing multi hour dives at night in a black ocean. I’m amazed we got as many seals as we do.
