Rest in Peace Dragon Ball Canon. In today's video we will finally wrap up the conversation of Dragon Ball Canon. Dragon Ball Canon is dead. It died many years ago when Dragon Ball Z came out. But more recently, Dragon Ball Super has stuffed Dragon Ball Canon further into the grave. Qaaman will analyze how Dragon Ball Canon died and explains how it affects, Dragon Ball Super, Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball GT.

Also even tho Toriyama did cover The History of Trunks in the manga, I definitely prefer the TV special version specifically because Trunks achieved the Super Saiyan transformation at the cost of Gohan dying whereas in the manga, he was a Super Saiyan before Gohan died and I feel like the TV special was much more emotionally effective

In November 2018, Toei Animation and Shueisha Publishing Co., Ltd. confirmed during the Tokyo Skytree + Viz North America Tour that the Dragon Ball Super manga, for which Toriyama was responsible for only the story and character designs, was canon to Toriyama's manga. Toriyama even stated back when the ROF movie came out that he wrote it to be a continuation of the manga as if the manga was still in serialization. That's why most of the fandom have an issue with calling it a seperate continuity, because it isn't. DBS is canon to the original manga.
Dragon Ball canon (正史, seishi; Literally meaning "official history") was first officially defined during the Tokyo Skytree + Viz North America Tour in an exhibit called the History of Dragon Ball. It was later reaffirmed in December 2018 in Weekly Shōnen Jump.
As of the start of this tour on November 1, 2018, the official canon of Dragon Ball includes Akira Toriyama's original Dragon Ball manga (which composes both Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z in the West) and the Dragon Ball Super manga, which has its story written by Toriyama and artwork drawn by Toyotarō.
Additionally, despite not being adapted by the Dragon Ball Super manga as Dragon Ball Z: God and God was, Toriyama has confirmed that the events of Dragon Ball Z: Revival of "F" are a canonical continuation of his manga, as well. He also considers the Jaco the Galactic Patrolman manga and its extra chapter, Dragon Ball Minus, to be connected to his series. Most recently, Toriyama added Broly and Gogeta into the Dragon Ball canon with Dragon Ball Super: Broly.
Canon is very much a real thing, and here are the canons, according to the owners of Dragon Ball themselves:
Anime: DB, DB Kai, (History of Trunks), DBS, DBS Broly, DBS Super Hero, End of Z/Kai
Manga: DB Minus, Jaco the Galactic Patrolman, Dragon Ball (Z included, as the original manga didn't splinter off like the anime, as well as the manga version of History of Trunks), DBS (the ROF movie is not in the manga but Toriyama says the film is the events that occurred and is referenced in the manga, so the movie is canon to the manga), End of Z's original manga (Note, the Broly movie and Super Hero movie are also both canon to the manga but there are slight differences regarding the versions in the manga compared to those of the anime)
Just because there are contradictions and plot holes do not somehow stop them from being canon. Pretending plot holes only exist in Dragon Ball and not other franchises is ridiculous.

@@dominiquerobinson8888 again, this might be just me but GT for me still felt like I was watching Z. Just the atmosphere and anesthetic of GT felt familiar but new. Like we actually skipped ahead a few years into the future. Super feels like only a few months have passed. Just about everything and everyone feel the exact same. Only some characters regressed in characterization, where in GT, they kept them mostly intact and built up on them. I even like GT's themes, despite being one big homage to DB and DBZ, dealt with consequences from past mistakes. Baby being the consequences of the Saiyans wiping them out, Super 17 being the consequences of Goku wiping out the Red Ribbon Army, and the Shadow Dragons being the consequences of the Dragon Balls being used selfishly over the years. Most of those concepts may have only existed in the anime but they still made it work in that framework and made them standout even more without feeling too alien, if that makes sense. With Super, it feels so bloated with new shiz that feel so strange. We got literally God's now. Angels, the Omni-King, multiple universes and what. It just feels like too much to digest and we're expected to just by into the fact that this was always the case, which doesn't endear me to Super.

I feel like the DB Community just ignores what the word "Canon" actually means, just so they can have their favorite episodes/moments to be part of the main story.
The manga is the main story and that's that. The Anime with it's filler, most movies and GT can be seen as their own story, yes, but separated from the original story/manga.
Maybe DBS caused way too much confusion about this topic, as both the Anime & Manga are considered canon.
At least it makes more sense to treat them as different canons, due to them following Toriyama's script, but in different ways.

Kinda seems obvious to me but, I think the simplest way to explain Vegeta not mentioning Tarble in the Android Saga is that he assumed he died at somepoint in the time between the destruction of Planet Vegeta and the Android Saga, and therefor didn't mention him since nobody present knew of him. Vegeta said he couldn't care less about Tarble in DBS: Broly, which I think is an indicator that Vegeta thought he was weak and thus not worth his time searching for, so after Vegeta didn't hear from him after say, 5-8 years, he probably assumed he was dead.

Continuity obviously matters but at this point I just like the story content that I like. Most of the story filler in the OG Dragon Ball and Z anime I think actually benefits the arcs. Saiyan Scholar summed it up perfectly in a video he made awhile back, the Dragon Ball manga is Toriyama’s canon and the original source of everything. DB anime/movies, DBZ anime/movies, and DBGT are Toei’s original canon and then DBZ Kai, and DBS anime is Toei’s secondary canon but at the end of the day, content is content and fans should just enjoy that we have a variety of Dragon Ball content and shouldn’t let the concept of what’s “canon” and what’s not stop them from enjoying it

Perhaps the canon as such is dead, but we have a pretty good idea of what was supposed to have happened "for real" in the primary timeline, and what not - which we can call the "main continuity". The problem with the main continuity starting with Super onwards, is that there have been differing portrayals across media - the movies, the manga and the anime. The first Beerus encounter, for example, was told with slight differences across all three of these media. But we still can draw the common denominator of what happened from all three, and accept just the general gist of what happened:
Beerus comes to Earth, everyone tries to not piss him off, Vegeta snaps at him for slapping Bulma, they summon Shenron to find out about SSj God, Goku gets Ssj God and fights Beerus, Beerus is impressed and chooses not to destroy Earth.
And even in spite of slightly differing portrayals across different media, we can all agree that the above did happen, in one form or another. That's the caveat with Super, but we can still get down to what is truly canon just by finding common events from across all the portrayals - which I presume correspond to Toriyama's original notes, which then get adapted in different ways. It's these notes, these bare-bone plot points that are the strictest canon as far as Super is concerned.
What is not canon though? Obviously Z fillers - the writers from Toei were just making shit up without knowing any better. Theatrical movies - obviously, most couldn't even fit in the main timeline due to different minor or major problems. GT - can't have happened either, as it draws heavily from both Z fillers and theatricals, in fact basing its entire arcs on concepts therefrom.
So if you want an idea of things that "have happened for real", then I guess you take the DB manga, and after that just add Toriyama's general plot outlines of Super arcs. It's a bit more complicated than it should be, but that's the best we can do given the circumstances.

Anyway, our only out seems to be the fact that the anime often comes later and kind of overwrites the self-contained potrayals from the movies - for instance today the DBS Beerus arc is considered to be more accurate than the BoG movie, as it came later. Not sure if Tarble got mentioned in the anime outside of those movies thus far.
So yea, the situation seems a bit ambiguous - Tarble is definitely canon to the Toriyama movies (which tend to serve as basis for later anime arcs), but what the anime decides to do with him remains to be seen.

Even Dragonball Z was very messy at times behind the scenes and even if Toriyamas writing saved most of it (just look at the Android Saga), it's clear that the series didn't have a set direction during it's run and it shows. The more they add on top of the established storyline without a good plan or just bad writing in general, it creates situations that are not believable in the story (like Vegeta suddenly having a brother who was never mentioned before etc).

You are seriously over-analyzing this. When you get down to it, there are technically two canons: The manga and the anime (Just like with most anime/manga series). Both have differences and are their own thing. For example, compare the two Full Metal Alchemist animes or the two Hellsing animes. They have completely different stories, and are meant to be their own thing. Using one to compare the other makes no sense because they both operate on different lore.
The DBZ movies and GT timeline are their own thing, and are in the category of spinoffs that are not canon to the original story (similar to some Power Rangers series that are now being established as being in their own separate universes from other series). GT and DBZ movies take place in their own timeline, and yes, I put GT in this because the DBZ movies do show movie villains like Cooler in the Super 17 Saga, so it actually makes sense to classify GT in the same general timeline as the DBZ movies.
The super movies are a bit more debatable, but I'd argue the movies have their own canon similar to the DBZ movies.
The games, including Heroes, are not canon to either the manga or the anime, because they do their own thing, and honestly should go into the same category as DBZ/DBS fan mangas/animations. So unless you're counting all the fan-manga/animations as well, then the games really have no place in the canon discussion. Games are almost never canon to movies/animations/TV shows, and are almost always their own thing.

My view on canonicity: Any canon path that does not self-contradict can be considered A canon. Therefore there are multiple possible canons you can think of. Now, if you want to decide in what the "official" canon is, that would simply depend on what TOEI/Toriyami has stated is the "intended" canon. So, put simply, there are multiple canons, no official canon because no one canon has been official stated to be so, and - most important - no real use to decide (somewhat arbitrarily) what the real canon would be. Just choose a canon that doesn't self-contradict and you're good.

I just think there is 3 Main Canons (continuities) in Dragon Ball:
1 - DB Manga > DBS Manga + History Of Trunks Manga + Jaco Manga + ROF, DBS Broly and Super Hero Movies.
2 - DB Anime > DBZ Anime + All Fillers and some Movies (like Deadzone and Cooler) + TV Specials (Trunks, Bardock, etc...) > GT.
3 - DB Anime > DB Kai + TV Specials > DBS Anime (without the movies).
And maybe Bulma was surprised to see that GOKU, specifically Goku was an Alien because he looks like an Earthling.

Canon is mostly a fan made concept. That does not mean that there is no continuity at all thought. It just means that only the writers of the show, comic, manga, or any othre media form dictate the what does or does not belong in their continuity. Even if it contridicts past events or makes no sense. So there are bound to be certain pieces of Dragon Ball media that people like that is not in continuity and other pieces of Dragon Ball media that people hate that is in continuity.

What people need to realize is that canon is not singular. Canon and Continuity is something that go hand to hand, many franchises have multiple continuities (Dragon Ball, Marvel, DC etc etc). Canon simply explain what belongs where whil Continuity explains which is what.
Canon is not dead, it's simply not one thing, they are many canons. Everything that is published by the people who own Dragon Ball is canon, even the video games. They are just different continuities.
