As a teenager, I saw the 2 guitar version of Black Flag. The first time was with Emil Johnson on drums with Saccharine Trust opening and the other was with Bill Stevenson playing drums and The Minutemen opening. Those concerts are among the best I ever saw. I never Dez as the singer, but his guitar playing with the band was crucial. Saw the Black Flag a couple more times after that with Kira on bass. They were not bad per se, but the 2 guitar Black Flag was simply a better band. Saw the DC3 once. They were pretty cool as well. Thanks or posting this interview.
Dez was the best singer in black flag I think. I liked Keith and Ron but dez was awesome. I even listened to them when Henry first started and dez played guitar but once he left I quit listening. Henry is really good at being Henry but him joining black flag sucked

Hey! Dig this true story, I was drinking bottles of genuine Budvar Pivo @ a Misfits show w/Dez, Marky and Jerry in Prague, this was I think the Summer of 2004. Good times!
The riot Dez is talking bout at 20:29 was the Baces Hall Riot...the cops road blocked the streets around the club and waited until the news crews got there before 40 riot geared up cops entered the club pushed the crowd against the stage then just beat the snot out of a bunch of teenagers....I was onstage roadie-ing for Black Flag as the cops got closer to the stage Robo and I stuffed ourselves and part of his drum set, which was clear, into a closet on the side of the stage then Greg Ginn piled on top of us with a clear guitar. The pandamonium began to subside then a cop opens the open and shines his flashlight on us...how he didn't see us I don't know, he left and we stay in another 5 mins. We got out to the street and there was helicopters...cops and kids running around bottles flying......it was a great time to be young n dumb
So, the two guys who'd eventually succeed Keith Morrison as Black Flag's lead vocalist before themselves being succeeded by Henry Rollins were almost literally nextdoor neighbors growing up and met while voc #3 was hosting a yard sale of which voc #2 was a customer all while Keith was still the frontman?!
I wonder where Ron 'Chavo' Reyes is? By far the best Black Flag singer of their long existence. It is awesome that they still play and have Mike Vallely singing, NJ💪, he's a badass mother plucker.🤘🤘🤘
I got to see Dez sing once, and Keith sing when Rollins band did the west Memphis 3 shows, but I thought Henry was the best vocalist by far. He gets a bad rap in retrospect, but at the peak of their powers in 82 - 83 Henry was the vocalist. I can't imagine any of the other guys singing the post damaged material either.

Ive had the same favorite Black Flag singers numbered since I was 12 about 25 years ago after the first time I heard 'Everything Went Black' #1 Ron "Chavo" Reyes( By far the best voice of Black Flag) #2 Keith Morris ( can't dent the snarkiness of his vocals and just plain attitude, he's "not punk he's just pissed", #3Mike Valley😛,#4 Dez Cadena, and I cringed when I first heard 'Damaged' with #5 Henry Rollins singing, I thought it would have been a lot better being that I loved State of Alert(S.O.A.) his first band in DC. I didn't really care for Dezzy's vocals as much either but he definitely did a better job than Rollins.

Dez is my 2nd favorite BF vocalist, Keith 3rd (I think he was better in CJ personally), and Ron just barely behind him. Oh and I guess Mike V is somewhere in there, probably behind Ron lol, I think he's a better skater than vocalist. Dez was the first BF singer to go for that nasty, scratchy delivery that Henry ran with, and that was a killer move on Dez's part.
I've been a Black Flag fan since the early 80s and this is the first time I've heard an interview with Dez. Thanks for posting.

I got to see BLACK FLAG with RON REYES on Vocals in Vancouver (My Hometown) and seen him with other groups hes been apart of. Hes great.
