I was taught you hold them reverse for safety reasons like its less likely to cut an innocent bystander or someone your trying to defend actually kinda the opposite of what you said. As in you'd flip them when the adversary is in range then reverse to avoid swinging the blade too wild
From my understanding, reverse grip provides a non-lethal option to the practitioner. Stun instead of maim/kill. Makes the weapon more useful IMO. Great content! 🙏
One unique thing about close in fighting is that if you master it, you are almost unbeatable, You are inside their guard. This could be why the reverse grip was developed.
