The HTC One X was the first new-generation Android smartphone to come out this year. It introduced us to a new kind of Android experience -- one powered by an ultra-fast quad-core processor. With the recent introduction of the Samsung Galaxy S III, though, things are going to get much more interesting. Take a deep breath, people, as what follows is the most epic Android clash for the first half of the year -- the Samsung Galaxy S III is facing the HTC One X!...
Had a look at my provider and picked these two phones for my upgrade next year. Thanks to your review I'm looking forward to getting myself the Samsung :-)
Thanks for another in-depth review, Ray. Ignore the haters; from my standpoint, this was a pretty fair review, and had points that were mentioned in other reviews as well.
I can testify to the fact that text navigation is not harder on the S3 and I was using HTC phones way before I got my S3. The HTC One is the second best phone out right now but my very own use between both of these phones proved that the S3 has much better battery life along with the fact that you can't remove the battery or memory on the One and this is something that many people forget.
What phone you had? because some older htc phones where pretty bad yeah.
actually in your One X test you said it's not the best android phone.. and that was long before the S3 was available.. so what was the best one back then?
The one x with its newest update from HTC to sense 4.1 and android 4.0.4 is very smooth and the benchmarks show that it has improved a lot.
You also have to consider that HOX is delivered with 32gb default, and quite honestly, most people won't ever need any more than that, and you get 27gb on DropBox. The GS3 is delivered with 16gb, so to reach the same capacity you need to upgrade.
Also, if you get the American version of the GS3, you get a dual-core processor. HOX is quad-core in all countries.
Added to that, you need to take care when buying the GS3, since it is sold with both 2gb and 1gb memory.
i agree with most of the comments here except the on the browsers, the htc browser is resizing the text and its a great feature, i miss that on my old htc compared to my new
samsung
I always was a Nokia fan, great quality on their phones.
But the first time I got my HTC Inspire 4G I felt in love with it. I'm sure the S3 is great for anyone looking for a nice and fast smartphone.
But the HTC have some unique feeling, and also offers the same or better performance than the S3.
I don't know why some people talk too bad about HTC, I have never experienced anything wrong with that brand.
Since both use android, there is a lot of customizing in both devices.
So which one should i buy???
Also, it seems that most professional reviewers prefer the HOX screen, due to it never over-saturating, having better brightness and a clearer picture.
In the end, though, it all comes down to personal preference. As most reviews tell you, these two are among the best phones you can get at the moment (if not *the* best). Some say that even iPhone 5 can't topple them off that throne, but I reserve judgement on that until I've actually tried one. :)
@8casm Just a bit of advice, a HTC One X+ comes out in 2 weeks that is basically an upgraded one x. (looks the same but better internals) Good Luck!
A friend of mine sold his one x and another friend of mine sold the GS3, i bought the latter. I did because they are both last year mobiles but i give samsung more chance to get updated more. Also touchwiz has more things about it and i dont get why people say its ugly. And offcourse the battery is both bigger and removable. Screen on HTC is maybe better but GS3 has a godly screen too. A safe assumption is that you cant go wrong with both of these beasts.
My co-worker has the HTC one X. When I played around with it there is still lag. Not lag in a sense like OMGAAH I can't play lag but the animations are not smooth.
Maybe you don't notice it because you don't have a comparison. He admits he should have waited just a little for the Galaxy but he's still happy with the One X.
I'm glad they put the optimized thingy out for you but if the Galaxy didn't come out they probably would not have done so. Competition drives innovation and improvement.
Where are you hearing that HTC phones fail? I've never heard of that, ever. HTC phones weren't the greatest, but with the One series lineup they really hit the nail on the head.
Super AMOLED- blacker blacks
Super LCD 2- a LOT whiter whites, more true-to-life colors, and higher brightness, meaning better outdoor visibility.
Specifically on the One X, it has the same resolution as the S3, but packed up on a smaller display, meaning more ppi, and with a better matrix which makes pixels invisible to the naked eye. Also, the space between the surface of the glass and the screen is so tiny, that it's like somebody glued a sticker onto the display. It's beautiful :)
All I see is people complaining about the plastic feel of the S3. To me this is a wiser decision to cut productions cost. You're buying a phone not a car, jewelry or something you're making a lifetime commitment to. HTC could learn a thing or two from Samsung is this respect. If HTC would stop trying to copy Nokia they may stay relevant, Samsung is the Number 1 phone manufacturer in the world for a reason.
And in my initial statement, I had added "so to reach the same capacity you need to upgrade".
Is it wrong to have an opinion on which you like better?
AT&T's price for the One X sealed the deal for me, thanks AT&T and HTC for the 50% price reduction, half the upfront cost of the S3!
Remember when we had to use pay phones and beepers? I just got my GS3, not because of this review, but because its the best phone on the market atm.
hey man, what phone do you use???
Both of these phones are simply amazing. They both have their pros and both have their cons. The fact is though, they are some of the best phones money can buy today. If HTC would rock a Super AMOLED HD display, it would be my phone of choice. I'd be happy with either one though!
You guys ... i only own the One X but have seen alot of reviews of the S3 too, and i have to say that there pretty much the same phone with different operating systems... so if you like touchwiz, go for the S3 and if you like Sense, go for the One X :)
At the time of launch here, the S3 did only come in 16gb, and 32gb is still uncommon (I thought it was being released with the 64gb, but I must have heard wrong). Most, if not all, carriers here only have the 16gb version. When it has a quad-core, the S3 has only 1 gb (though apparently, one with 2gb and QC will be released in some countries in Asia), and I didn't know about the 50gb dropbox storage, so I couldn't really mention it.
It feels cheap. And call it whatever you like, it is basically see-through plastic over ordinary plastic. The One X feels a lot better in the hand (personal experience, I had played around with both phones before getting my One X), and it has a better build quality overall. Then we take into account the display of the One X, its interface, the Tegra 3 chip, Beats Audio and all the little stuff that is in that phone, and we get why I chose the One X over the S3 :)
Hey guys this is John..........vfrom phonearena he says it fast
hahah you've put the voice command ''ON'' thats why it made a picture XD great review btw
Which is the best phone for music/ sound effects?
Sansung was launched to the market later than One X. But I don't quite like its strength. Especially, the heat could destroy the chip as my friend had to claim at the center and waited for a week. In the VDO, the HTC automatically captures the screen when he zooms in or out the texts, if he doesn't like it, I think, he could switch it off. And one more thing, he didn't show the Beat audio that much although it's quite useful for a big fan of magic sound. (I'm using HTC Sensation XE with Beat.)
IMO, whether to go for one or another is personal preference. Some people will like the UI/specs/looks of one, while others prefer the UI/specs/looks of another...
i usually prefer samsung over other devices but the one x is just great! HTC has really listened to its consumers and made great improvements
You are right, I have absolutely no idea about what I just said. I currently own an iPhone 4s (didn't buy it, hand me down from my brother : / ). I have had the chance to use a Galaxy Nexus for a week though, and it was one of the best experiences I have ever had on a phone. The size is perfect, it is zippy (JB) and the screen resolution is decent enough. I have been told that custom ROM's are unstable sometimes, but I wouldnt know about it. I am still waiting for the new Nexus though :P
I'm glad the One X is 24fps video recording, you'll find it actually works a lot better and considering a lot of films are shot at 24fps then yeah.
That is: I meant to write that the HOX "is available as quad-core" (I thought it, but forgot to type it). I was fooled by my friend's purchase.
The only difference as I see it is ergonomics. I'm going to buy one of these 2 and I would probably go for the S3, because I'm used to having the home hardkey which also wakes up phone. It seems much more comfortable for one-handed use than having to reach to the top of the phone for the power button.
I do love the One X design more..
The One X has a 312ppi and the Galaxy S 3 has 306ppi. You can see the difference in the pixel of 6ppi? Wow you're a better man than most.
One thing they have in common, they're both more customizable and personalized than iPhone. And thats always a great thing!
I agree 110 percent with you as I have just came from two different htc devices and they both required warranty replacement with n the first 6 months of use this is completely unacceptable for any phone maker. I can also testify to the fact that there is a noticeable difference in battery performance and overall performance between these 2 devices. The samsun galaxy s 3 is by far the best phone on the market.
Get the S3. One main disadvantage for me is that you can't move apps to SD on the S3, but I'll most likely root my S3 when I get it and get away from that problem. The S3 has a sharper camera (Check gsmarena), MicroSD, better battery life, better benchmark results (Where One X is better it's by a little bit (
when you see both browsers next to each other you see how much better the htc display is
Thanks for the review. Both great smartphones and comes down to personal preference as to which one to buy.
The samsung galaxy s3 was the most awaited phone, and it has lived up to its high expectations. Compared to the HTC one X it is still a clear winner!
Oh, thank you for explaining that ^_^ What phone would you recommend?
because when HTC were making smart phones, samsung we're still making fridges and CRT TVs ;) no seriously the htc is indestructible and , you can't scrach it, and you can trow it and it's still a smartphone with quad core 1.5 GHz processor , 1 gig ram , a stunning camera, beats by dre... this my friend is a state of the art phone !!!
I currently have the My Touch 4G and I'll be upgrading within' a couple of months. I actually like the mytouch so I'm not in a big rush to upgrade (unlike last time when I had the Clique). I'm thinking about getting the HTC One simply because of the cost. s3 might be better overall, but for $99 down and all it comes it, it holds greater value for the money.
i second that. had too many soft/hardware problems with my HTC, so i'll be moving to a different brand.
I, honestly, have not heard any of the people I know, having problems with their batteries, unless we go back about 15-20 years.
You can get a portable charger instead of a replaceable battery. You have Dropbox with 30-40 GB because of the partnership with HTC. The S3 actually has a lower quality display than the S2, only higher-res. It's not well visible in sunlight, unless you put your hand over it. I had no strains after 4 hours of usage. The resolution difference is quite visible, not only because of the higher ppi on the One X, but the matrix as well. You made your choice, I made mine, but please don't talk lies :)
Yes I do agree that both of these devices are spectacular it's just that after buying to brand new htc phones and having them both fail I can't say that I can recommend htc as a brand anymore and it's sad because I love htc sense 4.0
Oh I get you, yeah it is simplistic but that's why people (like me) like it, although don't get me wrong I'm not an Apple fanboy or anything and I like HTC Sense and Windows Phone 7 as much as I do iOS. Oh and btw I love beemo and Adventure Time :)
Hey guess what? Text reflow is an option on the HTC, I find it very usefull because you don´t have to scroll up down left right to read a text and probably get lost while doing it. You don´t like it, DISABLE it under internet options, it's there! Keyboards are about the same size, htc 2mm narrower but 5mm higher without de directional keys, but the best thing is that all the keys you need are right there...! Where are the numbers and symbols on the samsungs "better" keyboard. Write faster on HTC
You can't get the 64GB version yet. It hasn't been released.
I had missed that the 32 GB had been released (it wasn't available on launch here).
The CPU thing was my friend's fault; he'd managed to get a hold of a HOX from Europe, and didn't say.
However, as we well know, memory on a phone isn't everything. Most professional reviewers seem to favour the HOX over the GS3 still, due to the screen and the robuster build - seeing as these two phones are so similar in most matters of performance.
Most people hate the automatic text reflow. I however loved HTC's auto reflow. Thankfully, on S3 you can just download Opera browser which does text reflow anyway (can be turned off too, unlike HTC"s version). Neither stock browsers of HTC or Samsung are any good, the custom browsers like dolphin browser, opera and chrome are faster and more user friendly. So browsers isn't the best for comparison.
You make a good point, why degrade the perfectly good remark by beeing so rude m8 ?
Just don't get annoyed so fast, that;s not cool either .
I have owned a S3, and as of this week a One XL.
I prefer my the XL, it feels nicer in my hand, I prefer the HTC Sense - the predicitive text is 100 times better than Samsungs. Few other things.
Guess what - both are GREAT phones.
I'm confused. How is it that you're vouching for a device that you don't own? I understand how and why the reviewer chose the S3. I went to the At&t store checked out the One X and because of the lack of a micro SD slot, and changeable battery. These were critical selling points for me. The software features like Smartstay, S-Voice, TecTiles, pop-up play and Share Shot just to name a few are what made me decide to go with the Galaxy S III. Both screens are 720p so it's a toss up there.
There is no doubt that there are certain aspects of the One X that are superior to the Galaxy S III. I still don't get why everyone is so frigging angry. This guy has an opinion, you have an opinion also. You picked a phone and you're happy with your decision so be it. Overall the Galaxy S III was voted by the vast majority of the reviewers as a better device. Let it go.
If I ever get an Android, it will be a Nexus. The most stable UI, no bloatware, developer friendly and it get's regular updates. I am waiting for the new one to come though (which should be anytime now).
At the some time, a nice feeling, non-slip background wins over a lot of people due to the fact that it brings in the confidence that they won't drop it, it's one of the main reasons why I am not a massive fan of the S3, from the few times I have held my friends, I have constantly been paranoid about dropping it, unlike with my friends One X (for context, I'm currently deciding between the two, but looking at putting cm10 on it, so more concerned about cpu/body than anything else)
was it raining when you shot video?
Yea, I however like the detail the One X has(/can achieve with a slightly higher ppi) over the GS III but I like the color depth and tonal curves the AMOLED GS III has also. I suppose its preference really, with the only hardware performance difference being in favor of the GS III (more RAM.)
being able to remove your batt comes in handy if you root and are stuck on a boot loop, also makes replacing them cheaper. I have yet to use any external storage as 16gb is more than enough for what I do.
You're entitled to your own opinion. I just think they deserve to let the world know that they made an excellent device.
The flickering when he pinched to zoom in the browser on the one x was caused because its reformatting the text so you dont have to scroll side to side reading and makes it better in my opinion.
I have an upgrade this month and debating between these 2 phones... any help?
I absolutely agree!
What's the point of making a review if you have a sympathie for SGS3?
Good Review !!!
It will be helpful for a Person who is planning to buy a Smart Phone & is having a clash in his mind 'bout HTC One X or Samsung Galaxy S III.
Well, Choice is yours !!!!
I'm not sure if it's about which phone is better or whether it's more about the price. From what I've been hearing from a lot of people is that the S3 isn't worth the money (unless you're buying your first smart phone). I've heard folks say the upgrades from the S2 isn't worth the money. And the HTC one X is only $99 down compared to the $199 down for the S3. Yes, you may lose a few feature here and there but overall...is S3 worth the money over the HTC one X?
I have both and they're both really badass
i've experienced both phones from a hands on perspective and i honestly highly suggest the htc one x to anyone who will be purchasing one of these phones
I remember a few times where the person who was reviewing the phone was called bias just because the phone they picked was not the phone they liked but yet the the reviewer had the same phone that he did not pick so I disagree . Also know htc's reputation as a company and for what you pay you would expect them 2 have their devices last a lot longer then 6 months before they need replacing. Samsung is a much better company
Snappy comeback there.
I'm just saying: A removable battery is not much use to most people.
for normal humans it doesnt matter which one you take. only thing which is a big problem at htc is, that you cant change the battery if it gets damaged. and normally at phones at this size it takes 8-9 month to damage the battery
The thing people fail to realize here is that when you buy an Android phone you are basically buying it for the hardware only. If you root both of these phones and flash them with a stock ICS rom they are basically identical.
I have honestly had both phones, I really loved my one x but then the wifi broke. I took it back to at&t and they told me I could get an s3 if I wanted, so I got a galaxy. In all honesty I miss the one x. The little features were better, the screen was sharper and not so saturated, and Sense is beautiful. I still love my s3 but I do miss the one x.
I don't understand how this hasn't helped people. The S3 clearly is better *in his oppinion*. The people that are complaining aren't looking for an oppinion, they're looking for someone to validate a choice they've already made.
Omg I feel you I LOVE HTC Sense and I've always thought that the S3 UI and Hardware look a little cheap
both of them sound really good. I have gs3 rightnow, and I'm very satisfy.
I agree completely is samsung galaxy s 3 is by far the best phone on the market at this particular time I do believe that the htc 1 x is very close competition however the u s 3 still takes the cake at this time
Yes yes. My cousin, Roman, is my assistant. He said that I will be rich in this country.
Well freezing and bugging are as present on HTC's devices as they are in samsung's. Both sense and touchwiz are very stable, it depends more on what third party software you have installed.
I know all about HTC as I was using HTC way before I got my S3 and they are good phones and I love sense 4.0 its great. However all of my points about HTC are valid ones and I'm not the only person who has been having hardware issues. Remember I had two brand new HTC phones fail on me this is completely unacceptable for ANY company to have major issues both within less then years time.
I'm now with the S3 and in my opinion its a much better device and the hardware is way better as well........
All in all, it looks like The SG3 is a bit better as it came out a bit later. The phones however appear to on a near equal standard. The SG3 seems to have won on the important proverb in technology: "It's the little things that count." I'll give the flag to the SG3 as more thought was put into it. However HTC is not to be discredited in it's insanely cool framework and insides. They are both state-of-the-art phones.
As always! have a nice day,
Can we rename this to "Superior User Expaerience of the Samsung Galaxy S III over the HTC One X"? This wasnt helpful in my decision between the 2 phones.
I am a huge htc fan but i must say that the S3 is slightly better. The video recording is better because it has less noise (although you can tweak the htc cam) and the one X does get hot while playing games or watching live streams. The specs of the one X are better but when it comes down to the usage: I am considering trading my one X for the S3. htc sense is holding me back. And I love the custom roms with sense 4.0. My battery life is improved so much. So i'm not sure but I am considering.
North American Specs, I chose the S3.
Galaxy S3
Dual Core Qualcomm Snapdragon CPU @1.5ghz (Krait) (Arm Cortex A9)
Adreno 225 GPU
2Gb of RAM
Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen, 16M colors
720 x 1280 pixels, 4.8 inches (~306 ppi pixel density)
Removable battery and Storage
HTC One X
Dual Core Qualcomm Snapdragon CPU @1.5ghz (Krait) (Arm Cortex A9)
Adreno 225 GPU
1Gb of RAM
Super IPS LCD2 capacitive touchscreen, 16M colors
720 x 1280 pixels, 4.7 inches (~312 ppi pixel density)
I wouldn't go that far, and the iPhone actually has REALLY good hardware. Glass and aluminum? thats some classy, high-quality hardware right there
I may be wrong here but isn't the galaxy s3's back made of poly carbonate as well?
They are both wonderful!!
why? so you lose the nvidia quad core? i dont think you thought this through very well
seriously how often do u use the keyboard side ways?
I think he is being quite objective.... I'm still considering trading my S3 for a One X... Its a tough choice
Unless you're getting the International version of the One X you're getting an S4 Snapdragon MSM8960 for the processor not the Tegra 3. The exact same processor in the US version of the Galaxy S3. The US version of the One X on HTC's website clear defines that you only get 25GB with Dropbox. You get 50GB with the Galaxy S3. 720p @ 312ppi vs 720p @ 306ppi. 1Gb of RAM vs 2GB of RAM for S3. In terms of features the S3 wins hands down. Your preference is your preference just be honest about it.
i agree with you, the HTC One X, in my opinion is better designed. Don't like the cheap plasticky craftmanship of the S III. Yes the one x is also made of plastic but it is a lot higher quality and more of a solid feel to it.
I've used both of these phones, but i can honestly say (being a htc user) i prefer the Samsung!
Right! I like HTC One X more than Galaxy s3, because HTC is much better! In this video he just show his preferences!
He's got the S3's power save mode turned on, which is very clear when he's got the browsers open on both phones. Turning it off and the S3 has a much brighter screen.
What time is it?
I only hope they start doing MOBILE phones that actually fits in your pockets. 4inc is max and if they release an S3 4inch I'll definitely buy it
