I dig that you were listening to Red Light Green Light by LB, featuring Snoop. Results May Vary was a very underrated album. Thanks for showing how easy it is to format a new thumb drive.
this is definitely a helpful feature. i partition for music, but if i only wanted to use for the dashcam, its great knowing everything can be done straight from the car. fw. tfs. 😊👍🏻😊
Thanks Terry, You always make things easy to understand! I notice you are using a 1128GB drive, does the Model 3 delete the oldest file and replace with newer files such that it is a continuous capture? Also, do you know how many minutes can be retrieved per GB? Again, thanks, you provide a great service to us! Ken
Yes it now deletes older footage automatically. Not sure about the minutes per GB. I haven’t looked. I go with the larger drives now so that files aren’t deleted if I go on a road trip and there is a lot of Sentry activity.
Not faster but I agree with everything else you said. It's cheaper and definitely more portable since it's tiny. Also if someone does try to get in your car and start looking for the thumb drive, they'll have harder time finding it if its a flash drive.
Is there an advantage to being able to remove the USB so you can get at the videos in case they are needed? If they placed a SSD within the car it may not allow getting the videos to where you need them - like defense for an accident or other misfortune.
Hi Terry, when I do this on a brand new 3.0 San disk flash drive in my model s, it continues to say “Error while formatting USB drive for Dashcam”. Can you help?
Terry, apologies you need to clear you screen. I just had my Model 3 and Model S updated for the Full Self Driving computers. Stopping at traffic lights needs some work. It stops and flashing yellow lights for example. Now I'm getting my 2017 Model S Media Computer Unit updated.
I tried this, and most of my clips won't playback. Seems they are corrupted for some reason. Any suggestions? it happens on the drive that came with my 2022 Model y, and on another SD card that already had. A Sandisk 64Exrreme Pro.
@@TerryLeeWhite thank you so much! This worked perfectly. I can see the sound on my USB but it doesn't show in the boombox drop down. I'll take another crack at it!!
Apologies in advance for the ignorant questions; I’m trying to do this on my own & have very little tech knowledge. First question: I leave the flash drive plugged in to the port, right? (Don’t laugh) Does this mean that my wireless charging mat (that is currently plugged into both ports) is now only a single charger? Also, will the recordings automatically save on their own? Or if (god forbid) I need a specific clip, how do I save it? I assume it continuously records over itself, right? Thanks in advance
Hi, not ignorant at all. 1.) Yes once it's formatted you leave it in the port. If both your ports are used by your charging pad, you'll need to use a USB splitter or USB hub to add more ports. 2.) The recordings are stored chronologically on your drive. When the drive fills up your Tesla will start deleting the oldest videos to make room for new ones. You can go with a larger capacity thumb drive so that you have more videos stored. Also when you "save" a video using the Dashcam icon I believe that it saves it in a folder and keeps it from being overwritten.
@@hollymcgeough4806 hmm idk,if you look on your passenger door the build month is there. Any build after October 2016 I believe is what tesla told me should be capable. May have to upgrade your mcu in order to do it. That's the only thing I can think of that may be why it doesn't if it's a late build.
Funny, you ask Tesla to add an SSD but then you answered right after why it wouldn’t make sense and thus probably answered what Tesla’s reply would be for not having an SSD
I have the Jeda 256GB drive in my Tesla; it will NOT overwrite older recordings. Why? I have to format drive to erase everything and start over when it warns me (thank you Elon) that the drive is getting full.
Dang it I completely didn't realize this was necessary, and missed a lot of sentry footage. Thank you for sharing this guide!
such a hero, keeps things easy and simple explained. Thank you!

Wow I didn’t know we can watch the video on screen now! Thank you!
No problem
Thanks, Terry! This really helped. :)
i need to format my USB drive, but its not letting met click it? this is after it's filled up. thoughts?
I have the same issue
Tim you're brilliant, been messing around with this for days, tried your hack and bingo worked immediately
love your intro dude!

I formatted the Tesla provided USB. Now I can’t view the footage in Tesla. Do you know how to fix it? I can still view videos using computer.
Brilliant thank you. Merry Christmas.
Thank you. I need tutorial in this.

Damn that easy, I was struggling my dear friend! Tank U
Thanks 😊
Thanks so much for making this!

Can you use the super small guys instead of that big one?
can you keep the tesla usb in the glove box for sentry and usb in the center console for music?
Sure. When I made this the USB ports hadn’t moved to the glove box yet.

Hmmm perhaps try a different brand drive.
Can you make one to add BoomBox sound? I'd like my M3 to give a little roar 🐅 🥰 I'm going to try this on my lunch break.

I am genuinely grateful for you. Thank you so, so much.
You’re the real MVP
Thank you!!!! :D
My 2021 Model Y came with a 128GB Tesla USB drive
Thank you!
Hi Terry. How about with a Model X built in late 2016? Thanks!
No on that year.
What month was it built? Mine was in November and I have sentry mode and can view from my car.
@@Texasbama2 It’s a 2016 and I took delivery in March 2017. I have sentry but no dash cam or thumb drive application.

I think the mcu upgrade is about 2k. Or use to be. But then you will be able to view so 2k may be worth it
