So ive never used shellac before but i love the way it looks on the metal. Can i clearcoat over the shellac? Or does it act like a clearcoat to stop the rust. I would just like to preserve that neat look the shellac gives to the metal. Do u prefer the brush on type or spray on type? Thanks again
Beautiful restoration as you always do. Watching the channel inspired me to restore an 8inch Gedore adjustable spanner which had a half inch gap between the jaws when closed. Taking the spanner apart and cleaning and drilling out the keyway restored the spanners ability to close. Thanks to you I had the confidence to tackle the job, thank you.

I love it in the past year I have refurbished 4 pipe wrenchs. I used several different paint colors the Alliis Chalmers orange Was a great match for Rigid Tool Co. and a nice dark blue I found to match the old Crafstsman blue

Square jaw end and no groove on the nut. pre wwII. Repaint it black. I clean and repaint about 6 a year, Sometimes I go red ( rustoium semigloss apple red ) because the customers are more comfortable buying a red ridgid wrench. I should be black.

With a triangular file, you can dress the teeth in the jaws and give it better functionality. I've done this and it makes a world of difference in the grip of the tool!

those type we have the 'record leader' , but they dont have any springs inside the head, i think its one of their strengths, only 3 parts to the entire wrench, no springs, no pivots to break compared to the other type

I have a 14" (I think, it's outside at the moment) version of this in a lot of pretty bad shape tools I got a few months back. I left it alone for a while because I saw the glimmer of red paint under the grime, and prior experience tells me that there's 3 colors you have to watch out for in particular (though not exclusively) on old objects: White, Red and Yellow, because they were the common colors of lead paint. Mine tested positive for lead using some of the 3M swabs, so please be careful. PS: It's possible the positive came from old lead pipe residue on the wrench, being that the previous owner would be in his 120s now, but I'll need to get some more swaps to check. That old paint is SERIOUSLY tough, and I'll need to put another coat of Lead Out paint remover on the remaining bits that wouldn't clean up. Though it's possible I just left too much grime on for it to work properly the first time around. I'm not looking forwards to it as that paint stripper degrades plastics, even nitrile gloves won't keep it off your hands...
Hello Taylor- For this wrench I used Dupli-color "Chevy Orange" because I was trying to match the original color... The problem is that paint isn't as durable as a enamel paint like Rustoleum... I think you are better off with a slower drying enamel paint, it lasts longer... Thanks!!!

Hello Charles! I'm sorry I'm not sure I understand the question... Most times I shellac the entire wrench and then just tape up the parts I don't want painted, then I spray the whole wrench with paint! I think the Duplicolor is lacquer but I really prefer Rustoleum because it dries slower... Thanks very much!!!
Hello Charles! I have a really nice cabinet blaster and I NEVER use it! Unfortunately the finish left by a sand or bead blast doesn't look good and unless you go over it with a wire brush afterwards it looks bad. The best this a sand or bead blaster is good for is if you were going to paint the entire object, then it's fine because it leaves a surface that the paint will easily stick to! I paid over $400 for that blasting cabinet twenty years ago and never used it! Go figure! lol Thanks!
Hello John! It depends, usually I don't shellac over polished parts, I almost always shellac over any part of the tool I will be painting, Shellac is a terrific primer and really sticks to metal, then the paint can adhere to the shellac much better then bare metal! Thanks so much!!!!!!!!!

I like rustolium semi gloss apple red. closer to the 50s 60s red.

Stephen- Enamel is the key, lacquers dry fast but chip easy on tools... The slower the cure the longer it lasts! =)
