Great video. For people wanting to play this game I have an advice, don't and I mean, don't use the Switch's touch screen or PS4 game trackpad to draw the powers. Kamiya said it himself, the gaemplay was planned to use the second stick to draw like in Okami, then they added the other controls. The action is so frantic that stopping to draw with your fingers is dull and slows down everything. Use the second stick, now that Nintendo doesn't have to tell them to push for the GamePad they said it right from the get go: Use the second stick.
I remember playing a demo for like 10 minutes at the time and even in that short a span I realized that the analog stick was way faster and better, like fighting game inputs. I feel the same playing this remaster.
To me both inputs sucks. I wish I could make shorcuts to the abilities like "hold right to Unite hand, hold longer to make bigger hand", this would be limited but it is way too hard to draw with analog sticks
You mention this part at the beginning as the greatest stressor, but the vorkken fights on wiiu were the places you'd see the worst frame drops. On the controller prompts that's probably because you always used a controller to get past the start screen. The prompts are neither determined by whether you had a controller plugged in, nor by what is currently sending inputs. They are determined by what you used last to get past the start screen, so if you press spacebsr for example to get past the start screen, you will exclusively get keyboard prompts until you go back to the start screen and use a controller to get past it instead or change "Control Guide" in the options menu
@ Switch can run Mario Kart 8 at 1080p, Wii U 720p. Same for Donkey Kong or Captain Toad. Many other games saw performance increases (Bayonetta 1 & 2) or better resolution (Zelda BOTW). So this is not an excuse.
They port batonetta 2 on switch and have a little better performance, maybe they do a patch fixing this iisue on switch but i think that this game in switch never reach a 60fps constantly.. only if the add a performance mode thats a good idea
Yes, I did find this video useful. Now I know I'm not playing this game on the Switch. Keeping the same unstable performance given the dated visuals of this game is a bummer. It's not a remaster at all.
If anything, this just validates the decision to keep Bayonetta at 720p on Switch. The hardware is powerful enough to run Wii U games at 1080p, but if a game struggled on that hardware it'll still struggle on the Switch. Having an optional 720p mode for docked would've probably gotten things closer to 60fps, but it would probably need to drop even lower for a complete lock.
Seriously it's just a port, not a remaster. The textures arent even updated at all and the models are still low poly. How this shit drops frames on PS4 is beyond me considering how much stronger the system is compared to Wii U and Switch. Even Bayonetta and Vanquish run much better
Switch runs games smoothly that the Wii U can’t at all so Switch is more than a bit more powerful than its predecessor. It’s far closer to PS4. PS4 Pro on the other hand no. But hey let’s take a jab at a Nintendo for Platinums unusual failing.
@Alistair So you basically complain about the price. The price for Switch and Wii U at launch is the same. Pretty weird if you love the Wii U but hated the Switch. And you know that there are more than just a GPU inside a Switch, right? CPU, RAM, display, touchscreen, speakers, storage drive, motion sensor, battery, accessories. Not to mention the marketing and profit. And you have to consider the battery consumption. You also didn't consider that Switch was released in 2017 and GTX 1650 was released in 2019. You are weird, you love Wii U that have less specs than Switch but you hate Switch that has better spec and similar to Wii U. It sounds like you're just salty that you don't have a Switch.
The only time the second screen was vital was the dual screen segments. Most of the time, you never look at the second screen on the Wii U. The information on it isn't really that useful, because you can already see the information on the main screen.
1080p might have not been the best option for switch given that performance. Maybe 900p or even 720p would have been a better option, though if that were the case calling it a remaster would be a bit of a stretch.
@@UltimateAlgorithm I dunno about that, this is a really fast paced game and 30fps just wouldn't be responsive enough for the game to really be enjoyable.
720p is too disappointing, but they certainly could have come out ahead with 900p. The thing almost runs good enough at 1080p... we need a real performance patch, or a drop to 900p.
yeah this is in the re-release category. I don't like how these publishers just randomly throw around the word remaster for every old game they put back on the market. In some cases even complete remakes are labeled as remasters, in others they'll use that name on simple ports. Nobody ever knows what to expect, a whole new experience or just a slightly higher resolution, if that. Sometimes they're actually a downgrade, especially if the original had a PC port and you played it at the highest settings/high res and framerate back in the day.
@TonyKnockOff U do know ports offer higher resolutions right? Thts like the bare minimum tht a port does (tht and optimization on tht platform to work well on it) Like Black Flag was ported to One and PS4 (nothing changed except a bump from sub-720p to 900p (One) and 1080p (PS4); better ansiotropic as well too I guess)
it's a port. and lazy ones at that. The Switch version is straight-up unacceptable with that horrendous framerates and no 4K support for the Pro is just final proof that this is a money grab laziness! hopefully, they will improve these ports later and if they don't hopefully people don't buy it. Laziness shouldn't be rewarded.
@@jordannet5233 As a supporter for the Kickstarter campaign, we were promised DLC in the future. Just very miniscule mini games featuring Luka, but it is something new.
That is our only chance for a Switch performance patch... the fact that Platinum has to keep paying attention to the game for awhile longer in order to fulfill promises to backers... after that, they will almost certainly forget about the game and move on.

The game has low system requirements, but it has absolutely atrocious frame pacing issues. It starts at unstable 59fps and it actually goes worse the longer your play session is. The frame limiter on PC is the worst I've seen to date.
I would like the Switch version to get a performance mode patch that either uses Dynamic resolution or lock it to 720p so we could get a more stable Frame rate.
@@PolaroidMemory Yeah, basically two settings are needed: 1. Optional 30fps cap 2. Option to reduce resolution to 720p docked, or 540p portable. With the HUD and menus remaining at native. Then the user can decide how they want to run it.

Not even kidding my fav game on all time so glad to see it on PC and current gen consoles can only hope it gets the love and attention it deserves this time around.
I'm just glad this game finally gets the attention and reviews it deserves. So many people back then just dropped it right away and gave it medciore scores because they couldn't just mash their way through.,
Or maybe they just thought it was mediocre because they thought it was mediocre. Wtf? Base ps4 version is much better than switch or wii u. Why do you feel the need to drag it through the mud? The switch version has inconsistent framerate while base ps4 has dips in particular moments
That warning about the PC version is false. Digital Foundry likely had a Firewall blocking their controller which is what happened to me. Also even on the Wii U touch screen drawing was always inferior to just using the joysticks. And speaking of the touch screen, the Original Wii U version had support for the Pro Controller which uses the same features found in these versions for alternatives to the touch screen. So if the touch screen for whatever reason was not available or you just wanted to see the touch screen sections on your TV, just press "Select" (the '-' button or touch pad).
Played this through on PS4 Pro for the first time. One of my all time favorite games now, about to play through it again on hard. This review is a bit off the mark. The radar is a totally useless gimmick and I cant imagine it being used on the wii U either, you dont have time to look down at another screen in the middle of combat. Drawing the unite morphs is also a useless gimmick, you need to learn to use the right stick to play this game well. There's a definite learning curve here, but it feels good when you get it down. It's like learning how to do a shoryuken for the first time
Well thats the last time i kickstart ever again. I have switch version coming. If covid was to blame for polish they should have postponed the damn thing. Devs could do no wrong up til now. Now, this is a huge negative. I feel like its a proper cash grab. This would have come to pc and ps4 anyway and made much profit WITHOUT a kickstarter. Platinum games are laughing at me right now. Minimum effort, maximum profit. Loyal fans will not forget this.
If this game had been set to 720p 60FPS like Bayonetta 2, I would've bought in on Switch, just for the sake of having my physical copy along with Bayo 1/2 and Astral Chain, but now that I've seen this video, I'll get it for my PS4 Pro instead. It feels wrong considering it was a cherished game of mine on the WiiU, but I want that higher frame rate.
Tbh I was torn between getting w101 digitally or picking up xenoblade, but I think I'll just get xenoblade and hope they patch W101 by the time it gets its physical release since I'd prefer the physical copy.
You should have tried docked 720p for this game. I bet it would have performed even better than portable. And for mClassic owners like myself, it is a perfectly valid setting.
The Switch version should have had the option of 720p docked mode or 30fps, I think that would have been better, as it is, it looks like the PC version is the best with being able to play at 4k/60fps. I also wonder because of the split screen nature of the game of if it was possible for the developers to tap into a smartphone and have the raider on that, I think that would have been a better option than it being overlaid or spilt screen like it is.
really disappointed with the framerate on switch, i would've gone with ps4 if i knew it would be basically identical to wii u. platinum really confuses me sometimes, if they're gonna target 60 then why not sacrifice image quality? i'm sure 720p on switch docked, or some kind of dynamic resolution scaling, couldve reached an average of 50fps or so, which would be way better than what we got. wish i could refund and get it on ps4 instead
I will wait for the Xbox one X version. As read in the kickstarter campaign's FAQ : "Of course, we absolutely want to release The Wonderful 101: Remastered on platforms other than Nintendo Switch, Steam, and PS4 so that fans everywhere can play, but this is a challenging endeavor for our first foray into self-publishing. That’s why we wanted to concentrate on these three initial hardware platforms. However, we are absolutely listening, and if this campaign is successful enough to allow us the flexibility to port the game on additional platforms, we’d love to make it happen." As the campaign was a HUGE success, I will wait for the Xbox one X version, hoping a resolution boost that doesn't affect the framerate (or just a 100% locked 60fps with 1080p, I'm not greedy). I have plenty enough games to catch on until then (including Bayonetta/Vanquish)
I wonder what if Platinum Games would introduce some kind of compatibility between PS4 and PS vita in order to use it in the same way that wii U used to work.
I'm surprised there isn't any UI scaling done to the Remaster. They seem awfully big and the "mini" could really use some UI redesign to display the information instead of a straight-up being the mirror of the 2nd screen. This seems more like then port then a remaster. But I'm glad the game gets another chance to shine.
Great video! Looks like I'll be getting this one on PC! One thing I didn't see in this video - does this game support FPS cap over 60fps? I know lots of japanese games don't and I have a 144hz monitor I'd love to see this game run on.
Why didn't they just add a 720p 60fps mode and a 1080p Locked 30fps on the Switch? Would have solved the issue. Also, this seems more like a port than a remaster. Doesn't solve many of the issues the game had in the past.

I tested this on a system with a GTX 1050TI and an old quad core i5. It runs at 4K 60fps with dips when alpha transparencies are abundant. You can run this on a toaster. GET IT ON PC!
I thought this coverage a little generous too. Mostly identical visuals with worse frame rates on Switch does not make a remaster. Surprising given the generous backing and goodwill from the kickstarter campaign. The developer should have done more.
What's hilarious is the interview with Kamiya he states.. “But the fact of the matter was that the original engine for the game and the engine for the Xbox One are very different, and it’s not easy to port like the other systems. So as a result of that, unfortunately and regrettably, we had to relinquish the Xbox One release.” Yet we have it running on Windows with Direct X. WUT?!

Complaining about the touch screen is pretty stupid if you actually had history playing the game. Using the right stick for Unite Morphs is the best way of switching styles when you are in the heat of combat. This game was damaged by being a Wii U game because of the perception that the second screen was "necessary" for the game. Even the two screen sections were so minimal to the overall game experience but people over blow its importance.
It feels like Bloodstained again. It's nowhere near as busted as that one on release but a huge amount of your audience is very obviously going to be wanting it on the Switch, why did you not put in the effort to get it to run better?
It's ridicules that that Switch version is worse in every way in terms of frame rate compared to the Wii U. I would much rather have 720p at 60fps rather than 1080p and 27-45fps.
@Walther Penne No, docking the switch let's you get a lot more power compared to undocking it. Nintendo made the Swich consume less power in order to preserve battery life compared to when it's docked. So when it's undocked it's about 40% less powerful compared to when it's docked; so no, dumbass, you would get a much better frame rate reaching middle 50's-60fps if it was 720p when docked.

Third is ridiculous! The devs should've had the sense to get it running locked at 720p 60 on switch. Screws 1080p if I have 2 get frame drops that bad. So wtf r they playing at talk about dumb!!!! Having an optional 720p mode for docked would've probably gotten things closer to 60fps, but it would probably need to drop even lower for a complete lock.
So, you mean to blame the devs for Nintendo's shit hardware. Ok.
So they received 1/4 BILLION Yen from Kickstarters so they make a shitty switch port and charge $40 for it??? Just WOW 😪
Regardless of how the library has been burgled, Wii U is still a cool system.
Laserdreams Wii U Master Race
@Alistair shut up. best hardware out of the three to accompany my gaming pc.
@Alistair What's wrong with Switch? Switch is just Wii U but better
@@XZ-III if you dont have an actual argument then keep your mouth shut.
The only time the second screen was vital was the dual screen segments. Most of the time, you never look at the second screen on the Wii U. The information on it isn't really that useful, because you can already see the information on the main screen.
Picture in picture is just fine. I don't think the loss of a second screen detracts from much.
1080p might have not been the best option for switch given that performance. Maybe 900p or even 720p would have been a better option, though if that were the case calling it a remaster would be a bit of a stretch.
The Switch version should be locked at 30 FPS for stability. Even scaling down to 720p is not enough for the Nintendo Switch.
Calling it a remaster already is a stretch. It's just a port.
Was looking forward to the Switch version but the frame rate is too random for my taste.

They're really stretching the definition of a remaster here...
More like this is a port!
yeah this is in the re-release category.
Thts like the bare minimum tht a port does (tht and optimization on tht platform to work well on it)
Like Black Flag was ported to One and PS4 (nothing changed except a bump from sub-720p to 900p (One) and 1080p (PS4); better ansiotropic as well too I guess)
it's a port. and lazy ones at that. The Switch version is straight-up unacceptable with that horrendous framerates and no 4K support for the Pro is just final proof that this is a money grab laziness! hopefully, they will improve these ports later and if they don't hopefully people don't buy it. Laziness shouldn't be rewarded.
@TonyKnockOff no lol, the graphics aren't touched up at all and the models are still low poly
Okay, Platinum can definitely issue some patches for these issues. Seeing as there is DLC already to be released, it should be likely.
YES PLEASE ! Also there are DLCs for this game already ?
@@jordannet5233 As a supporter for the Kickstarter campaign, we were promised DLC in the future. Just very miniscule mini games featuring Luka, but it is something new.
That is our only chance for a Switch performance patch... the fact that Platinum has to keep paying attention to the game for awhile longer in order to fulfill promises to backers... after that, they will almost certainly forget about the game and move on.
Wonderful 101 was my favorite Wii U game.
It's quite underwhelming that it can't even maintain 60 fps on PS4. It just look like a port and not a remaster.
It is a port and not a remaster. They only called it a remaster to get more people to throw their money in the kickstarter. They even avoided to mentioning the money was only for publishing and not development until after they got their money.

I dont think it would even need to go below 900p to be honest. But yeah would be a nice option!

The switch version has inconsistent framerate while base ps4 has dips in particular moments
Disappointed that they didn't add dual screen support for PS4 + PSVita.
What games even do that on PS4
That warning about the PC version is false. Digital Foundry likely had a Firewall blocking their controller which is what happened to me.
Also even on the Wii U touch screen drawing was always inferior to just using the joysticks. And speaking of the touch screen, the Original Wii U version had support for the Pro Controller which uses the same features found in these versions for alternatives to the touch screen. So if the touch screen for whatever reason was not available or you just wanted to see the touch screen sections on your TV, just press "Select" (the '-' button or touch pad).

It's like learning how to do a shoryuken for the first time
would have been more interesting if you showed the same sections on all versions. The comparison is really bad.
Digital Foundry please do an analysis of Huntdown 👍👍
Well thats the last time i kickstart ever again. I have switch version coming. If covid was to blame for polish they should have postponed the damn thing. Devs could do no wrong up til now. Minimum effort, maximum profit. Loyal fans will not forget this.
It's still a great game.
PlatinumGames...that's a consolation prize
Yeah so get it on PC or PS4 for visuals and performance got it!

2:45 Why does Switch have jaggies on the buss seat to the right and the Wii U not?
no AA
Switch port with virtually the same issues as WiiU version makes it seem like a cash grab for the platform.
Yes and they got over 200 million from backers....shit port from greedy /lazy developers
I’d likely only buy the remaster on PC to help in development of mods for this game, since I already own this game on Wii U.
Sublime game, terribly overlooked on Wii U. Everyone should play it.
I would expect no less from the creators of okami
But does the game support 32:9 to have both screens side by side at full size?
I'd much rather prefer an option for performance mode on switch with 60 fps at 720p. Rocket league did it.
@Walther Penne Actually you can. The same could be said about Kingdom Heart 3 running full 60fps at 720p on Xbox One X.
@Walther Penne You're right, what I meant was a high performance mode with close to 60fps
But is Wonder Green's big gun still a SNES Super scope??
Probably not. LEGO City Undercover had to strip the Nintendo references in the non-Nintendo versions.
really disappointed with the framerate on switch, i would've gone with ps4 if i knew it would be basically identical to wii u. platinum really confuses me sometimes, if they're gonna target 60 then why not sacrifice image quality? i'm sure 720p on switch docked, or some kind of dynamic resolution scaling, couldve reached an average of 50fps or so, which would be way better than what we got. wish i could refund and get it on ps4 instead
However, we are absolutely listening, and if this campaign is successful enough to allow us the flexibility to port the game on additional platforms, we’d love to make it happen."
As the campaign was a HUGE success, I will wait for the Xbox one X version, hoping a resolution boost that doesn't affect the framerate (or just a 100% locked 60fps with 1080p, I'm not greedy).
I have plenty enough games to catch on until then (including Bayonetta/Vanquish)
I wonder what if Platinum Games would introduce some kind of compatibility between PS4 and PS vita in order to use it in the same way that wii U used to work.
Would be interesting but no one is going to buy a vita for that functionality lol

Why didn't they just add a 720p 60fps mode and a 1080p Locked 30fps on the Switch? Would have solved the issue. Also, this seems more like a port than a remaster. Doesn't solve many of the issues the game had in the past.

I agree, poorly optimised and just dumped onto the hardware.

@@Sedifet I really wouldn't. The gamepad really doesn't add much. Picture in picture is completely fine. The game's performance is obviously far better on modern machines. I wouldn't sacrifice that just for the gamepad.
does this mean you can use your second monitor for the green overhead map?
Even if it doesn't have official support, I bet you could get to work in two monitor Eyefinity.
I legit feel screwed over by Platinum. If I knew I was getting Wii U performance on the Switch I would have never backed the kickstarter.
yeah im gonna sell my kickstarted switch copy and grab the PC version lol
@@callumdointhings5 They should have sent you a Steam code due to the delay. Check your email.
@@callumdointhings5 Also, I might do the same and wait for a deep price drop.
@@ZeniusFox no way! That's amazing but I can't find that anywhere lol
Edit: ah apparently it takes a bit to get it for some people
I suppose you could buy it on a different machine.
How can you do a kicstarter and deliver this kind of performance with NO graphical improvement. Unacceptable!
The game was already ported and the kickstarter was for self-publication.
Game is quite a bit less taxing than I expected. I am running it on a GTX 1060 3GB at high setting 4K HDR with Vsync and basically have a 59-60 fps lock for the duration of the game.
Their PC ports are usually very good. Bayonetta and Vanquish had great ports.
Having a multiple monitor mode on PC would've been cool. It should be possible with a borderless windows.
Seems like a quick n dirty job
Does the PC version have support for all three button schemes/prompts?
What about the frame rate analysis on the PC?
I love Platinum to death, but this is just a port selled as remaster. Looks really lazy on console, I'll stick to the Wii U version.
@Walther Penne W101 was for free in Mario Kart 8 deal and on Club Nintendo rewards.
Wondering how performance improves on an overclocked Switch vía sys-clock Tesla overlay. Hopefully much improved? I’m debating if whether to play it on my stock switch or modified one.
They might patch it but I doubt they'll improve it much, if you have a physical version then do the modded one with a boost clock speed for a better fps
What do you think about a next generation feature that gives you a Physical copy+a digital copy of the game for inconvenience 🤯 It would give a whole new twist to midnight releases!
They'd loose money giving everyone 1 extra free copy unless they make the games more expensive
Oh nice, PC has 4K + HDR + 60 fps. And even ultrawidescreen support. Seems to be the ultimate version.
Yup
