    Good video. For information, it's now possible to buy only the sprag clutch as an aftermarket part, instead of the entire assembly, which makes the job a lot cheaper and obviates the need to grind away part of the casing. You take apart the assembly by removing the external circlip which holds the thing with holes in it against the toothed wheel and this will allow access to the sprag. I purchased my new sprag from a shop in Dylaki, Poland which sells on ebay and it works fine

    Did my 900 sprint l reg a few years back mine had the bigger one fitted already found that out after I stripped it down I was told it might have so best check before I bought the new sprag only prob I had was one of the 10mm bolts on clutch basket snapped I got it out put a new one in n put it all back together was my first one so felt well pleased with my self always make sure it has a fully charged battery Now because I was told that's wot weakens the sprag spring

    IS this the same engine and procedure to do in a Tiger 900??

    • @pick6667
      @pick6667  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the tiger motor has the top access panel then it is the same engine and the same procedure, but like the trophy some had the other style engine without the top access panel and these motors had to be taken out of the frame and the engine cases split to do the sprag clutch,

    Hi Pick, I have the 1995 model 900 sprint, and it doesn't have the removable cover over the sprag clutch, my engine has a loud knock from what seems to be the lower end, I've been told they are prone to breaking the bolt between the sprag and the alternator, is there any around splitting the engine?

    • @pick6667
      @pick6667  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know of any way around splitting the cases, To be fair I have only done one where I had to split the cases, It's not difficult just time consuming.

    This is the job I never did. 20yrs ago, my'92 750 Trident broke its sprag just when I had zero spare money available! I couldn't even afford the replacement sprag. I ended up selling the bike off cheap to some guy.
    Hmm, didn't Triumph do an electrical upgrade too? To allow the engine more revolutions before getting a spark?

      @listairgin 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pick666 thanks very much for the reply, that is way too much work and it highlights the pathetic attitude of a certain design team. This fault throughout a range of very desirable motorcycles has blackened the Triumph name with my circle of friends. I really like the new model trophy 12se but I wouldn’t touch one as I wouldn’t trust Triumph after all the bullshit for years and years with the sprag troubles. Whoever was responsible for this accessibility flaw has done irreparable damage to Triumphs name. This is so annoying. Bastards is what they are! How this came about being signed off should be investigated.

      @@listairgin Your view is very undaerstandable. Personally I love these bikes but would not touch a later example where the plate over the sprag doesn't exist any longer. Now that IS inexcusable, given the problem didn't go away and might just as easily surface. Having said that, these engines have shown that they can run over 100,000 miles with little if any major problem , if cared for , and set against other makes and designs this is a plus point. John Bloor didn't skimp and certainly built these bikes with in built over engineering, determined to draw a line under the old Meriden/ Small Heath triple, which iteself wasn't a poor design ( rather innvative actually, given the limited finances available for development), though variable in production quality.

      Pick666 thanks so very much for the reply, I had a very strong notion of buying a nice trophy 1200 but if I ever do now it will have to be the earlier one with the cover. I mean having to remove an engine and split crankcases to fix something that does apparently give trouble is absolutely pathetic, shame on whoever let this design through to production. Thanks for your reply and excellent and very well explained video. A lot of people will really benefit from it for sure. Just think of the man hours of removing the later type engine and then the nightmare of splitting it and rebuilding it again. Wow nightmare!!!
