Hi Matt, I recently picked up an 05’ TRX 450r. Can’t get it to start after completely tearing down the carb and cleaning it. All the jets are clean and clear, and there’s new gas. The spark plug looks new also. I adjusted the accelerator pump to get the best squirt. I can get it to briefly fire (about 2 seconds) after choking it then kicking it on half throttle. I have a feeling it’s either an idle screw or air/fuel screw adjustment. How do I adjust to the correct setting for those without hearing the engine while running?
Did you verify stock pilot jet? Can you see light through the pilot jet? Did you remove the fuel screw and clean the carb body pilot circuit? Hot start plunger clean and operating correctly?
Yea went through the carb like 10 times sprayed down the sides on the intake manifold tube with starting fluid and bammm it dies sure enough bad gasket to the motor

Pilot jet is the first one to clog up. What most dont know is, from idle to an 1/8 or 1/4 turn of the throttle is all pilot jet. You can heat these jets with a mini torch, make them almost glow to clean them. Sounds crazy, will not hurt it. Been doing this for years. If use a low flammability cleaner you heat the jet and toss it in and let it sizzle. Will clean them like new.
i did this, but apparently held it too hard in the pliers while hot. I had to heat it up again and press it the other way to round it back out. it still fits, although screwing it in you can tell it's not perfect anymore.. oh well, it's clear and works great!
That was exactly my issue. I haven't been riding my bike for some time, so I was trying to fix it. First, the carb was overflowing after cleaning, so I adjusted the floats, but then it was running only on choke. Adjusting the floats a bit closer to the original position fixed it.
Bought a motorcycle this weekend. Started and idled fine. At 1/4 throttle it started leaning out badly without the choke/enrichner pulled out. It had been sitting for a long time. Pulled the float bowl off and the idle jet was fine but the bottom of the main jet and bottom of the bowl had black gunk on it. You might also want to check the gap/s on your valves. I was running on half-choke on the pre-owned Zhejiang 250 dirt bike I got last year. I pulled the engine to use on a 2009 Honda Rebel "Rolling Chassis" that I got dirt cheap. When the engine was sitting on a bench, I checked the valves and there was NO LASH in the exhaust valve. I gapped it at .003, and when I bolted the engine in the Honda frame and wired it..... it ran like new, again. No choke. You GOTTA keep those valves adjusted, every 2500 miles, or so.
I do agree with you, smae problem I faced , tried many things with carb but couldn't find the exact issue.finaly ended up with value adjustment.....👍👍👌👌
A crazy trick I learned from the Seafoam rep while working at an auto parts store…. Cook the whole carb in seafoam in a crock pot on low for 24 hours. Remove all plastic parts such as floats or choke arms,, but leave any gaskets or o rings. Clears up the the gunk and rejuvenates gaskets and o rings.
Why my 86 fj 1200 would only run on choke. A malfunctioning vent valve in the vapor recovery system caused vacuum in the float bowls so no fuel could go into the jets. Full choke opens a vent to atmosphere in the float bowls so engine would get fuel. It happened on the freeway at night. so I just kept opening the choke everytime the engine would stop running.

ANOTHER REASON: Similar symptom, but different cause. The circlip popped off the needle in my Honda FCR carb. So the needle was simply sitting in the fully down position even if I twisted my throttle. It would still idle, but that was all. When I engaged the choke, it brought the "idle" speed up a few hundred RPM (as is normal when you engage the choke). This allowed me enough power to limp out of the bush back to my vehicle. Thankfully it was mostly downhill.
Bought a 2006 Kawasaki Bayou 250 out of a local barn. It would only run on choke. I put about half a can of Seafoam in the two gallon tank. Within an hour, it was running like a champ. Only needs a little choke to start now, but often starts cold with no choke. Couldn't run better if new. Saved me a carb rebuild or replacement.
I appreciate your time on this video, once I watched it and found the same issue with mine on a kawaski KFX 90 ran like new, My pilot jet was plug so bad that I use a very small drill bit to hand turn the junk out. wala
KLR 650 pilot screw is covered by a cap. Take that cap off, otherwise you'll be out on the trail with a clogged pilot jet and no way to get at it. Happened to me in the desert in Arizona (got sand in my fuel line, lond story). Luckily made it to the local moto mechanic in Ajo (at the NAPA) with my choke on. Then get an finger adjustable pilot needle off Ebay for $12.00.
Awesome video, thank you so much!! I have the same bike, took it to shop and they wanted to charge me over $1900, they told me its almost cheaper to buy a new unit which they had in their show room.
Pretty good- I'll tell you as one who's rebuilt a few Honda carbs: that orifice in the low speed jet is .012", .3 mm in diameter, and the use of an appropriately sized wire is actually the best way to clean it--- the wire won't open it up any, but it'll clean off any lingering debris the solvent/blowout process is unable to remove... I got some .011" misic wire for anyone who wants some...
after hunting around for a wire to use, anything that would fit was too flimsy, and anything that was firm enough was too thick. I ended up torching the jet and eventually the thin flimsy wire went all the way through and then i was good.. I don't think torching the brass was a good idea as i warped and reformed it a little bit, but it fits
This helped me today.. I tried a lot to fix this. But I could not. Today I watched this video and tried again . but I updated the jet. It was successful. Thank you very much. ❤️
This type of problem is more and more common with the gas we get nowadays. Back in my time (yes I’m an old fart) you could store a lawn mower or motorcycle for a year and come back and it would start first or second attempt. Nowadays with all the mandated additives (crap) they won’t start after a few weeks of storage. Total crap
Good Stuff! workin on a yamaha yfz 450 quad. bike sat for 2 years. I took the carb float bowl off because the needle was stuck in the seat. it was stored at the beach. salt corrosion in the float bowl . cleaned all that out. starts, idles, but won't take a rev. clogged jets maybe?
I had a carb recently that would only run on choke and I tried EVERYTHING. The answer, it turned out, was that I was being an idiot and had choke/on and choke/off positions reversed in my head. I was so happy and so irritated at the same time when the realization hit me ) Thought I'd provide a laugh for the rest of y'all.
Late to the show, but EXCELLENT video. Thank you. One question, why don't you replace jets instead of cleaning them? An entire rebuild kit is usually less than $15, and a single jet is normally less than $5. Seems like the easiest thing would be to hose the carb out with B12, throw in a new jet, and call it a day. Just curious.
Awesome mate,i did everything you said twice.. worked for a bit but i still have the same problem, I noticed you said 9 outer 10 whats the other reason.coil pack, contacts maybe. I have a 50cc motor Chinese two stroke.
You explain things really well. Thank you! I have learned alot. Question for the opposite scenario. I have a brand new bike. 250 cc Lifan engine with a Pz30 carb. It starts just fine with no choke but the bike WONT idle on choke at start up. It's been 50s and 60s temps overnight. For context, I got the bike with a really lean idle setting, which caused stalls at traffic lights even when engine was warmed. I recently took the pilot screw out a half + turn to about the 1 1/2 mark to improve idle. Idles great now. But only with the choke completely off at start up. How is the absence of choke on a cold engine helping start up? More interested conceptually what is going on in this case.
The pilot jet and air screw setting are too rich, and that is why choke is not needed. Adjust the air screw again per this video and let me know how many turns out: th-cam.com/video/TDU2KOpYwFg/w-d-xo.html
Very nice video. Also adding an inline fuel filter with small magnet does a lot of wonders and prevents such happenings . So must be added in small engine setups like this . Atv or mini bike or moped scooter etc.
Thanks for an awesome instructional video on carb cleaning and assembly. You make things much easier to understand, I can't wait to get started on my Polaris 500 sportsman carb which currently only runs on the choke. I will follow up this post once I've gone through the carb. Thanks and stay safe!
Every time I fix a carb problem just by cleaning everything on it it still feels like magic and it always amazes my friends.😂 most people don’t realize how important it is.
My 6hp pressure washer would only run with full choke and took a long time before I could ease the lever into the run position. Probably due to improper storage for a extended amount of time. Bought a $12 carburetor off Amazon. It’s non adjustable so I don’t have to adjust carburetor manually. I went to use the washer again and the problem fixed itself without changing out the carb.
I had an EN125 standing for almost 2 years not started got new plug and battery and got it running on the choke only, watched this video, followed the steps and it starts and runs like new. My mechanic wanted to charge me $400 for a new carb to get the bike sorted serviced and running doing the work myself cost me just under $100 and 2 hours.
MatthewMCRepair I have used it 4 times and it cleared up after running it with the choke on for few minutes! I let it sit for 12 hours with the stuff in it ! Always better to r and r it ! Best carb spray is 2+2 carb spray!
Thanks Matt. I have cleaned the jets, soaked the pilot jet, air blasted, etc. (I can see through it, it's clean) and the bike still doesn't like to run w/o choke out. It looks to me like you screwed the pilot jet in tight, but not too tight. Is it always supposed to be screwed in tight, or does it ever require backing out a turn or two? Thanks -- Gee
After tearing town the carb on 89 yamaha big bear 350 I found nothing wrong! Then I looked to the intake boot! There it was, the boot that overlays the aluminum mount blocks had torn away at the engine side just enough that t was sucking air at a rate that it only would idle on full choke? I just couldn't wait for a new part so i made a new one from an 1-1/4" furnco fitting. Just removed all original boot, cleaned the aluminum and installed with supplied clamps. Cutaway the boot at the carb side nut mount area for clearance and installed it! Fired up with very little effort and runs like its new again. The great part is it cost under 5 bucks. I think a proper sized radiator hose could do the same repair if needed. I just don't know of the long term breakdown, if any, from fuel!
I had the same issue at one point. Listen closely to the carburetor it'll sound like a butterfly. tighten the little valve screws inside. I turned it off and then started up again half choke. the bike was left outside half choked for one day
My bike shut off at a long light right after it turned green... Couldn’t get it to start without choke and some throttle... Gotta clean me carbs dammit
I have an 05 Polaris Predator 500. I took it to a local shop, a good one, with the intention of having the valves adjusted due to the carb blowing gas out instead of sucking air in while trying to start it. He found the timing was waaay off so he corrected that. Then he found that because the timing was so off, the starter clutch was toast. So he ordered one and fixed that. He told me that it starts and runs but the valves still need to be adjusted (I just didn't have enough money to pay him for that) so yes, it does start but only runs while on full choke. The moment I give it gas, it shuts off. Will getting the valve(s) adjusted fix this issue??? Sidenote: The carb was taken off and apart, cleaned and had the internals replaced.
OMG! Thanks, 🙏 I wish I had a cold beer 🍺 for you. I was on a long ride through my neighborhood when my bike started going out on me, it was all bad. I ran out of gas, my gasket for the intake manifold was shot and from what I’ve seen here I’m pretty sure my jets are clogged also because I had to ride home with my choke 😬on.
Pretty good at what and which steps to take my guy. I been watching you for a few months taking in tips for my f4i and you've proved your subscription worth. My question now is about my lil ones pocket bike. Since I'm really not mechanically inclined, how long can she ride with only choke open? I mean it's 40cc and yesterday being 3rd start n ride how many runs before it no longer cranks to ride? It's brand new and I'm really hoping to see your reply. Have a nice day and keep posting...patiently waiting on you
Mike, the choke should only be needed for about 30 seconds to a minute when engine is cold. Once engine is hot it should require no choke, otherwise something is wrong.
I love that nasty stuff lol..great video!! Explained really well..I have a question for u, where the air filter stick onto the carburetor if remove the air filter, u can see the carburetor flop inside close and open I don't know what it's called but I'll just call it flop, so mine question is when choke is on, is the flop supposed to be closed or open? I believe it's supposed to be closed right? On mine if it's closed it won't turn over?? It only turn over when the flop is kinda open or wide open any ideas on that too?
Removed all of the California emission vent tubing off my Honda Shadow 1100 1994, and was just wondering what you thought about if removing the vent hoses increased or decreased the air-fuel mixture. Or should I just maybe stay the same. Anyway thank you so much this solved my pilot jet problem

came across this video because i have a petrol generator that only runs when on half choke... if i let it warm up a little and then flick choke off, it will run, But VERY lumpy! like its hunting for power... revs up, dies down, governer moves and fires it back up, dies down, etc etc The carb has no pilot jet.. It only has a main jet, which is crystal clear...

a good safe way to clean carb jets, is by using nylon fishing line. it comes in different gauges and will not damage any hole sizes
I also heard that you can bite the line to make it "bigger" and force it a bit through a passage to clean it.

Thanks for the great vid, was able to get my polaris 400 2 stroke running right again.
You can use a .010 guitar E string to open the hole in a pilot jet if it is clogged with gooey gas residue.
Ya screw that. Use torch tip cleaners.
@@JM-yx1lm Most torch tip cleaners are way too large.
Awesome video, thank you so much!! I have the same bike, took it to shop and they wanted to charge me over $1900, they told me its almost cheaper to buy a new unit which they had in their show room.
They just wanted to sell you a new bike and was forcing you, pretty much. Glad you walked.
Thank you so much for this my son has a 2016 sportsman that’s doing the same thing. Gonna give it a shot.
I use a set of torch tip cleaners. Keep em in the mobile toolbox.
Hoppes #9 gun cleaner is perfect for brass jets and small parts. Shines em up nice too!
Sea Foam is the best carb cleaner I've found. I'll qualify this "in California". Many cleaners like B-12 are reformulated for California requirements.
Torch tip cleaners work.
This helped me today.. I tried a lot to fix this. But I could not. Today I watched this video and tried again . but I updated the jet. It was successful. Thank you very much. ❤️
guitar string solves cloging ;)
Rafael Ramos da Costa thank you!
retro gaming time with joe ,,,.,””‘ok
I was about to share the same info. So many videos and nobody knows this.
Total crap
I usually just use Brake cleaner when cleaning a carb, and it works just fine.
🤣 the people who are going to try this
Thank you very much. This solved my KX100 running issue. Dead on to the point and issue.
Great video, That's exactly what I needed for my lawnmower ! Thank You.
Good Stuff! workin on a yamaha yfz 450 quad. bike sat for 2 years.
How do you fix it, please help sir.
A lot of times the new jets are of inferior build quality to the originals. They are cheap for a reason.
@@MrXelig Good point! Thanks!
Awesome mate,i did everything you said twice.. worked for a bit but i still have the same problem, I noticed you said 9 outer 10 whats the other reason.coil pack, contacts maybe. I have a 50cc motor Chinese two stroke.
What problem are you having?
MatthewMCRepair Methinks the problem is endemnic in this and rather many more cases
It's probably your idle mixture screw! If it isnt your jet try to richen your idle mixture screw
a bent valve with no compression will give you the same symtoms
Maybe it’s a bad gasket
Having issues with a Mikuni carb.......perfect video explanation. Thanks!!
Meet me here in Kenya,I will bye one beer🍺for you
You explain things really well.
Thanks for the clear and easy to understand explanation. And nice to see you using JIS screwdrivers!
A guy just put me on berryman. I was using gum out. Berry works better, for me.
Very nice video. Also adding an inline fuel filter with small magnet does a lot of wonders and prevents such happenings . So must be added in small engine setups like this . Atv or mini bike or moped scooter etc.
This helped with my quad gator
Thanks for an awesome instructional video on carb cleaning and assembly. You make things much easier to understand, I can't wait to get started on my Polaris 500 sportsman carb which currently only runs on the choke. I will follow up this post once I've gone through the carb. Thanks and stay safe!
I have used thin needles with great success
I take old cut down guitar strings and stick them in a wooden dowel works just as good as a torch tip cleaner :P
I use a bread tie with the plastic stripped off and it works great.
Dude... THANK YOU for this video. Helped a ton!
Every time I fix a carb problem just by cleaning everything on it it still feels like magic and it always amazes my friends.😂 most people don’t realize how important it is.
Right on great video, sure as heck helped us out🏍
I notice putting premium fuel and a fuel filter keeps them running cleaner and easy starts
Premium fuel in an air cooled engine is not good they run to hot and burn holes in the piston. I know from experience.
dipped mine in some sugar free red bull. worked a charm
Give em wings😂
My 6hp pressure washer would only run with full choke and took a long time before I could ease the lever into the run position. Probably due to improper storage for a extended amount of time. Bought a $12 carburetor off Amazon. It’s non adjustable so I don’t have to adjust carburetor manually.
I went to use the washer again and the problem fixed itself without changing out the carb.
Thank you, helped alot
Great video. Helped me fix my sons 50cc dirt bike
Your welcome
Nice. thank you for posting this.
Nice job!
"Someone was messing with the carb" yeah, it was you🤣
Matthew: I posted this video on my Carburetor Appreciation Society FB Group. Well done!
Cool thanks!
Mechanic in a bottle works great with out removing carb!
Sorry, not going to work in this case. Actually, I never use the stuff because it is not the correct way to do it.
MatthewMCRepair I have used it 4 times and it cleared up after running it with the choke on for few minutes! I let it sit for 12 hours with the stuff in it ! Always better to r and r it ! Best carb spray is 2+2 carb spray!
it's better to check everything
RevBiker Big D That doesn't work on rust.
Pilot jet tight/snug. Check for vaccum leaks. Did you adjust / tune the air/fuel screw?
thats a sweet tip. tip up the atv. like it. im gonna try next time.
Got myself a 196cc coleman ct200uex ordered a new mikuni carb and I think after this video I need to change the pilot jet
Thats Awesome that really helped mucho appreciated!💯👍
Awesome tutorial man thanks for making this video!
I had the same issue at one point. Listen closely to the carburetor it'll sound like a butterfly. tighten the little valve screws inside. I turned it off and then started up again half choke. the bike was left outside half choked for one day
Great information, camera angles need work.
Thanks!
I have a 2001 Honda Rancher. I had same issue, run on choke only. I replaced the carb with Honda OEM. Still does same thing.
No, not a valve adj issue. Sounds like a fuel delivery issue.
@@HTMR
Well it's got a new petcock and a new fuel pump, then we checked and made sure the fuel lines were clear...
read it as "COKE", disappointed.
Probably be only thing more expensive than petrol to run your bike on.. but you crack on; Just let me hose the exhaust!
I pretty much run on Coke.
Lol
Not as hard as it seems...
Thanks alot. My scooter runs perfect after cleaning the cab
I’m impressed with your ultrasonic cleaner
What brand or source would you suggest
Thanks for your expertise…!
Haven’t seen a better explanation. Helped my derbi senda.
Removed all of the California emission vent tubing off my Honda Shadow 1100 1994, and was just wondering what you thought about if removing the vent hoses increased or decreased the air-fuel mixture. Or should I just maybe stay the same. Anyway thank you so much this solved my pilot jet problem
Thanks for the video. Boiled the tank, cleaned carb, looks like I missed one peice of junk! 🙂
I got a question for you . if you don't want exhaust to smoke up your garage . why don't you stick a small hole in ur garage door and let the fumes go off that way then it would be easier to work in a warm environment wishes your garage
I bought a can of chemdip recently after not having any around he house for 20 years. When I opened the can I immediately knew this wasn't what it used to be... first: the vapors didn't burn the hair in my nose second: the basket is plastic... what a disappointment
Yeah, all "chemicals" are not what they used to be.
I have a little Honda pbr 50cc and i thank you sooo mutch becouse i have driven whith that issue where it would idle whith choke on but when i started accelerating i would have to take it og for it too run for like a year and this fixed it Im soo happy thx soo mutch bro
Wish this video was around 15 years ago. I stupidly bought a Harley chopper from Ebay, had to change the plugs almost every day I rode it.
Hello
I own a Reiju Mrt (50cc) that goes in 53 without choke but it does 60 with the choke on. Is it good to use the choke when i drive or can it cause problems with the engine? Is the only bad thing that can happen that it overheats beacuse it doesnt get the air that it needs ?
It wants more fuel. Make sure carb is clean. Other possibility is main jet is lean.
What type cleaner do you use in your ultrasonic cleaner? Great video! Solved my idle problem!
Sharpertek 1220
Should I spray carb cleaner on a brand new carb, and will it help prevent the jet from getting clogged?
came across this video because i have a petrol generator that only runs when on half choke... if i let it warm up a little and then flick choke off, it will run, But VERY lumpy! like its hunting for power...
revs up, dies down, governer moves and fires it back up, dies down, etc etc
The carb has no pilot jet.. It only has a main jet, which is crystal clear...
